Press release about DC's favorite Morning Party:

June 27, 2004

Dear patrons of SundayMASS DC:

For the last year and a half, we have been proud to offer SundayMASS DC as an entertainment and social alternative for the Capital area GLBT community. You have responded with great enthusiasm and loyalty and have adopted the event as your own. In turn, as producers, managers and more importantly friends we owe it to you and ourselves to stay in touch with the needs, concerns and issues of the community in which we live.

SundayMASS DC and Club FIVE recognize the need for immediate, visible and vast changes resulting from drug and illegal substance use that may have found its way into this event. In order to make necessary security and educational changes and to protect our loyal patrons and us, SundayMASS DC is temporarily and voluntarily closing its doors. As we make changes to SundayMASS DC that will result in a safer and more educational experience, we ask each of you to consider doing the same.

In 1999, citing "alarming levels of recreational drug use," Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) canceled its annual Fire Island Morning Party. The Morning Party, one of the gay circuit scene's most popular events, had been one of that organization's major fund-raising sources for 16 years.

We have no intention of permanently canceling SundayMASS DC and we don’t want anyone else to cancel it either. Additionally, it is certainly not our right or position to suggest what is best for others, but we are genuinely concerned about the health of our community and want to offer at least one alternative solution. We hope you feel the same. Educate yourselves about recreational drug use and its impact on your health. Don’t let the decisions of your friends take away those things you value or enjoy. Become educated, make smart decisions and put those decisions into action with others. For further information, visit www.tweaker.org or www.gmhc.org.

Your friends at SundayMASS DC and Club FIVE look forward to seeing you soon and thank you in advance for your consideration and understanding during this period of positive change.

Regards,

SundayMASS DC

i'm still somewhat shocked that you can go to Nation on Friday and they almost perform a DRE on you when they search you for stuff, but you can go on Saturday's and you can virtually walk in with a machete and no one will search you when you go in.

so fucking true, but it's completely different promotion teams and Buzz has had it's fair share of media over drugs.

Do they also close at 4 now on Sat nights? Or are they still open till 6?

velvet (the saturday night party) www.velvetnation.com stays open til 6am. the security is slack at the door because there are few to no problems on the saturday night events. the parties have been increasingly popular again and the promotion team is gearing up for some great 'hands in the air' big-room mega-nights the next few months.

sundaymassdc was such a great morning party, but the staff's goal was to make sure dc residents and visitors had a great place to go have fun..., a major item of dc buzz now, sundaymassdc is a party that a lot of tears are being shed over...
