DJ MAGTOP100 DJ POLL - And the winner is.........SASHA!

Recommended Posts

The votes have been added up and the results are finally released in

DJmag's 278th issue, which hits the streets on November 16th. The

DJmag Top 100 DJs poll - currently in its eighth year - is the dance

music industry's best indicator of a DJ's popularity and visibility,

and the vote has thrown up quite a few surprises this year. The top

DJ of the last two years, Paul Oakenfold, has been pipped to the post

by progressive house don Sasha - the original DJ pin-up. Sasha (real

name Alexander Coe) has been an ever-present figure during the

phenomenal growth of dance music over the last decade, never straying

from the credible path. "It's absolutely unbelievable," Sasha told

DJmag. "I'm overwhelmed to say the least. You shouldn't really pay

much attention to polls and prizes, but because this one's voted for

by the clubbers it's seen as the most honest award around. Every year

I think I'm going to be slipping because I'm out of the country a lot

and there's a lot of other DJs playing more commercial music and much

bigger gigs than me. So to find I've actually won it is amazing."

Sasha was undoubtably helped in his victory by the American internet

vote resulting from his fabled residency at Twilo in New York. His DJ

partner-in-crime at Twilo, John Digweed, shot up three places from

last year to finish at number three in the poll - just behind Paul

Oakenfold. Also staying in the top ten are Carl Cox, Paul Van Dyk,

Judge Jules and Danny Tenaglia, while crashing in from nowhere come

hard house trailblazers Fergie and Lisa Lashes (the first woman ever

to be voted into the Top Ten) and also Danny Howells. This year,

through additional website voting and DJmag's link up with leading

music site Dotmusic, there was increased input from other countries.

The poll still retains an obvious UK bias, but this year greater

reflects dance music's internationalism and the flourishing scenes in

many other territories around the globe. "DJ culture has grown into a

multi-million pound industry over the past decade, and our readers'

chart is the best indicator there is of the popularity of the top

spinners," said DJmag's Carl Loben. "The craft has grown immeasurably

since Sir Jimmy Saville first put two turntables together upstairs in

a northern pub forty years ago. For an enigma like Sasha this is long-

overdue recognition for somebody absolutely at the peak of his

artistry." See the Top 100 DJs issue of DJmag for the full results -

out Nov 16.

Sasha deserves it. icon14.gif
