Eddie G is on a mission -- to keep trance music alive in South Florida. Hip-hop has taken over many of our local clubs, with most dance-music DJs keeping their sets strictly house, but Eddie G is still keeping the faith for trance fans. A veteran of the long, lost Level Nightclub and Shadow Lounge, Eddie G is embarking on another journey -- as Saturday resident of the new House Nightclub at 20th and Biscayne Boulevard in Miami (formerly Cactus Bar & Grill); 305-438-0662.

Q: Tell me about House Nightclub.

House Nightclub is an Ibiza-style venue with four indoor rooms and an outdoor poolside terrace with two historical 1918 Key West-style homes on site, and a tiki hut terrace in the rear with a view of the bay. Its mission is to become one of Miami's premier dance venues where locals, tourists and celebrities can enjoy the ocean breeze from the bay and listen to world-renowned DJs laying down some incredible sets.

Q: What can we expect from your sets?

A euphoric, serenading, vocal progressive trance session with 26 years of spinning behind it that will blow them away.

Q: Why do you think DJs spinning trance have become scarce in Miami?

Trance DJs have become scarce in Miami because there are a lot of cheesy tracks out there; therefore, track selection is essential, and if you're not good at selecting tracks, you're kind of done. Trance music is also very expensive, coming from England and Germany, and the young DJs can't afford it. A trance record is averaging about $12-$13 now and great trance music is very difficult to find.

Q: You've worked side by side with big trance DJs like George Acosta, Talla 2XLC and John Kelly. Who'd you have the most fun with?

It would have to be Talla 2XLC from Germany. Talla and I put on some amazing shows at Level Nightclub and Club Spin.

Q: What's the high point of your career?

I haven't reached the high point of my career. I thought it was three years ago at Level when I was spinning with David Padilla, George Acosta, Talla 2XLC, Cosmic Gate, Scot Project and way more, but since then, I joined my manager, Jay Adams from South Beach Miami Productions and VIP Inside, and realized that my high point is still to come.

Q: Miami's nightlife scene has its peaks and valleys. Where is it now?

Miami's nightlife right now is a rising peak. It always has been. It's a continual growth because there are so many things to do in Miami, but as the nightlife scene gains exposure, more and more join the force.

Q: Is Miami a difficult town for an up-and-coming DJ?

Miami is a tough town for an upcoming DJ. There is a lot of competition -- not like the old days when it was just me, David Padilla, George Acosta and Edgar V. -- and you would have to be as good as they are -- otherwise nobody wants to listen to you.

Q: You've DJed many times in Ibiza. How does the Miami scene compare?

Compared to Ibiza, Miami has nothing to be embarrassed about. Ibiza does have some larger capacity venues but overall, we have great DJs and the most beautiful women on Earth.

Q: Do you have plans yet for Winter Music Conference?

I'll be in Ultra Music Festival again for the fourth year in a row, and I will either perform at House Nightclub, Nocturnal Miami, or probably both.

Q: What about you would surprise people?

I started spinning at the age of 8.

I'm impressed with what Eddie G had to say in this article. He summed it up nicely with how some DJs play too many cheesy Trance and have therefore been pushed out. Usually these types of Trance (and Breaks) DJs later whine about how the scene is dead, and nobody's "supporting the scene", ie nobody wants to come and see them spin...

He was also on point with this sentence "Trance music is also very expensive, coming from England and Germany, and the young DJs can't afford it."

I think up and coming DJs of ANY genre need to read that sentence, re-read it, and read it again till it sinks in. If you want to be a good DJ you've got to invest some real money on the good records until you make a name for yourself. If you want to be the best, you need to be playing music by some of the best.

Only the House DJs in Miami really seem to follow this logic, and that in part is due to the fact that they're also great House producers, and therefore get hooked up with promos of all the hottest House records from around the globe.
