HAZE
Unfortunately, I already did. I hear that people are getting calls from the water commision saying to boil the water.Nasty Holmdel chemist's body pulled from water tank Cops treating woman's death as homicide Thursday, February 10, 2005BY RUSSELL BEN-ALI Star-Ledger Staff The body of a chemist who disappeared Tuesday while conducting water quality tests at a Passaic County treatment plant was found last night at the bottom of a 35-foot-deep tank, authorities said. Prosecutors said they were investigating the death of 43-year-old Geetha Angara of Holmdel, a senior chemist for the Passaic Valley Water Commission, as a homicide, mainly because a protective grate over the tank made it appear unlikely she could have fallen in. We don't know if it's a homicide (but) we're treating it as such and investigating more avenues," Passaic County Prosecutor Thomas Avigliano said during a news conference last night at the Totowa facility. "The only means of access is to move a steel grate to get into that (tank). So we're looking at everything." Investigators found a section of the grate had been pulled away, creating enough space for a person to fall through. However, it was unclear whether the grate had been moved by police and dive teams who were the first to respond to the scene Tuesday night or had been pulled away before Angara fell in. But an accident has not been ruled out. "There's a possibility it could be an accident," Passaic County Sheriff Jerry Speziale said. "If the grate was ajar and on an angle, catty corner, someone could step on that grate and fall in accidentally." An autopsy will be conducted to determine whether there is evidence of trauma on the body. Angara, a married mother of three who had a doctorate from New York University, had worked at the treatment plant for nearly 12 years, according to a family member and a spokesman for the water commission, which operates the facility. "The thoughts and prayers of the staff and management of the Passaic Valley Water Commission are with the family of Geetha Angara," said Alan Levine, the commission's chairman. Angara was last seen at 10 a.m. Tuesday as she began her rounds, calibrating instruments near the tanks, Avigliano said. Family members said they became concerned when she did not return home Tuesday night. Police were dispatched to the site at about 10 p.m. and found a broken beaker near the side of the tank, Totowa police Detective Dennis Blakeley said. Angara's purse and cell phone also were found. At about 2 a.m. yesterday, officials began draining the tanks at the plant, which processes 75 million gallons of drinking water each day. Angara's car, which she had parked outside the plant as she arrived for work, was towed to the sheriff's department. As the afternoon wore on and the water was drained, investigators began to find clues inside the tank. First, a sneaker. Then, a clipboard and a two-way radio. All belonged to Angara. By 6:30 p.m, more than 9 million gallons had been drained. With the water level in the 100-foot-long tank down to a depth of five to eight feet, Angara's body was discovered in the deepest end of the tank. Investigators remained focused on the protective grate, which Speziale described as too large and heavy for Angara to have moved herself. Investigators are questioning workers at the plant as well as the police, who were first to arrive on the scene, to determine the grate's position at the time of Angara's disappearance. At Angara's Holmdel residence, a family member said one of her children, a college student in Massachusetts, rushed home yesterday after hearing her mother was missing. Her other two children, both in grade school, remained inside the home yesterday. Other family members spent much of the day at the Totowa site, anxiously awaiting news. At about 9:20 p.m., they were seen leaving in two cars. The plant treats water from the Passaic and Pompton rivers, converting it to drinking water for 800,000 people in Clifton, Passaic, Paterson and 14 other towns. http://www.nj.com/news/ledger/jersey/index.ssf?/base/news-8/110801718918180.xml
