bigpoppanils
civic or corolla or chevy prizm (rebadged corolla but cheaper)if she needs something bigger, the galant, accord, camry or sonata might work.
asonofabeachnj
You can find very decent 97-01 grand prix's in that price range. The 3800 V6 gets good gas mileage if driven normally. Other possibilites could be chevy malibu, olds alero or grand prix. Those can either have a high revving 4cyl or 3100/3400 V6.

bigpoppanils
i was thinking civic... i dont know if id trust an american car to drive from here to texas...GM's overhead valve (aka OHV) v6 and v8 engines are actually very reliable. these engines are the main reason why Buick is consistently ranked in the top 5 brands by reliability.when GM starts adding overhead camshafts and superchargers however the results are horrifying (except for the Northstar series).when looking at used GM cars, avoid digital dashboards AT ALL COSTS! *has horrible flashback of dad's oldsmobile tornado trofeo*
