POPGIRL 23

(Galanta, www.popgirl23.com) Portland ME

DJ VOX

(Bassmint Recordings) Boston MA

We welcome for the first time on Sunday (although we don't know why it took us so long) one of Maine's finest exports Popgirl 23. Jen has really been holding it down for House Music in Portland. DJing and throwing great club nights all over the city. Joining her for the opening duties is one of our favorite New Jackers and incredibly talented DJ, DJ Vox. We have seen Bo transformer from club freak, to gay-circuit DJ, to Jaded Househead in the past few years. If you have got a chance to check out his WMC mix from this year, make sure you bug him for a copy this Sunday.

POPGIRL 23

Jen's house mixes are packed full of tasty selections spanning the past 20 or more years of underground electronic dance music history. Her style ranges from the deep n' sexy end to straight up jackin' beats while crafting some funky, bass-driven grooves. Everything's done on the fly (no set lists), with constant mixer action including EQ effects, cuts, juggles, and harmonized extended mixes. The result is a positive, energetic, sexy, and sophisticated mix... with no silly gimmicks.

Early influences include growing up to 70's and 80's classic rock, Kraftwerk, Michael Jackson, Afrika Bambaata, Information Society, and freestyle artists often heard on saturday night mega-mix shows. In 1996 she asked her best friend and mentor (Roger) to show her how to mix. Her friend introduced her to classic house pioneers like Adonis, Hercules, Frankie Knuckles, Jamie Principle and such from late night record listening sessions... then the many nights over the past decade dancing to Junior Vasquez, Ron Trent, the Body and Soul DJ's (Joe Claussell, Danny Krivet, Francious K), and more at clubs in New York, San Fran, and Boston.

In the summer of 2004, Jen was recognized by the Portland Phoenix as one of PORTLAND'S MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN 2004 for "breaking into the boys club"... refering to her 14 years of heartfelt dedication to Portland's nightlife... as a DJ and promoter. To date (winter/spring'06) Jen's held as many as a dozen residencies in her hometown, winning PORTLAND'S BEST CLUB DJ 2003 title, and runner's-up for both 2002 and 2004. Recent residencies included a 4 year saturday night monthly at Una Wine Bar (voted Portland's #1 lounge 4 years in a row) featuring New England's best deep house and nu-jazz grooves; helping kick-off a friday bi- weekly "Plush" for the sexy crowd; a saturday night anything goes policy at "Swerve" for the wilder crowd; her floating party "House Jams" attracting Portland's most dedicated crew of house music lovers to Bubba's Sulky Lounge, (voted Portland's #1 place to dance 4 years in a row),... and still she continues to be invited to play in almost every major city in the northeast plus she's played in New York City, San Diego, San Francisco, Nashville, and overseas to Italy and the UK.

In short, her sound is distinct (with a classic take) and her mixes are smooth, but best of all is that she's coming from a dancer's perspective... she simply makes you want to dance.

DJ VOX

dj-Vox, a.k.a. Bo Johnson, moved to Boston from the UK in 2000 and has steadily made a name for himself in the local dance music scene. Originally from Houston, Texas, Vox discovered music early in life in the form of classic rock and heavy metal. These styles serve as a backbone to his sound today. This love of music guided him to become a guitarist as a teenager and eventually lead him to study at Berklee College of Music. While living in London, Vox discovered electronic dance music and soon traded in his guitar for a set of turntables. By involving these sounds Vox creates a transcendent feeling on the dance floor. His intuitive track selection and technical skills allow him to maintain the flow on a dance floor for hours on end.

Now a Berklee grad and an up-and-coming DJ/producer, Vox is 1/5 of Boston deep house label, Bassmint Recordings which celebrated its first release (Bumpin' N Jackin') in March of 2006. With appearances at Rise, Bump, Vertigo, and 33, Vox has grown a loyal fan base. His recent WMC double promo mix has received nothing but excellent reviews and was just featured on Slanted House Radio podcast. With a bang on New Years Eve opening set at Rise, Vox has definitely made his imprint on the Boston dance music scene. As he continues to research and evolve his sound, you can be sure to see and hear more from dj-Vox in the months and years to come. If you didn't shake it! We didn't make it!
