Mark Yardley’s Stanton Warriors project is arguably the best explanation for breakbeat’s consistent presence at festivals, clubs and concerts today. Incorporating vocals from across the board into a notoriously instrumental-dominated genre, Stanton Warriors have collaborated with luminaries including Twista, The Beatnuts and the UK’s finest, Sway.Mark Yardley then, is clearly a man who knows how to blend killer vocals with a killer beat, and so it is on his lovingly crafted re-rub of Jose Gonzalez’ finest hour, ‘Crosses’. Taking the lush guitar strumming and underpinning it with a punchy, live-sounding breakbeat allows the track to step seamlessly onto the dancefloor, without losing the delicate feel of Gonzalez’s original. The addition of a smooth, summery bassline and synths that would make Prince blush adds weight to an already heady cocktail, before the full chorus is unleashed in all its glory.
