Jose Gonzalez - Crosses (Mark Yardley Breaks Mix)

Ask most people what genre of dance music they’d associate most with summer and few would likely suggest breaks as the soundtrack to hot nights, beery afternoons and impromptu barbeques.

Some people, however, are out to change those preconceptions. Mark Yardley’s Stanton Warriors project is arguably the best explanation for breakbeat’s consistent presence at festivals, clubs and concerts today. Incorporating vocals from across the board into a notoriously instrumental-dominated genre, Stanton Warriors have collaborated with luminaries including Twista, The Beatnuts and the UK’s finest, Sway.

Mark Yardley then, is clearly a man who knows how to blend killer vocals with a killer beat, and so it is on his lovingly crafted re-rub of Jose Gonzalez’ finest hour, ‘Crosses’. Taking the lush guitar strumming and underpinning it with a punchy, live-sounding breakbeat allows the track to step seamlessly onto the dancefloor, without losing the delicate feel of Gonzalez’s original. The addition of a smooth, summery bassline and synths that would make Prince blush adds weight to an already heady cocktail, before the full chorus is unleashed in all its glory. Hands will be raised, shirts will be removed, water will be shared… this record is what summer’s all about really.

Already receiving heavy rotation from Krafty Kuts, Deekline, and of course, Stanton Warriors, this remix is undoubtedly going to be the soundtrack of the festival summer… Don’t sleep!
