THE RAM SESSIONS

SUB FOCUS [ Ram Records | Frequency ] - UK

With several tracks to his name all made in the space of the last twelve months 2004 has been a massive year for Nick aka Sub Focus: the year has seen him breakthrough in unprecedented fashion armed with the likes of the technically astounding "Acid Test", the simple yet devastatingly effective "Strobe", the lively "Get on Up" and the altoghether awesome "X-Ray". In a matter of months, he has gone from being one of many wannabe producers to become a permanent fixture of the award winning Ram Records family. Artists like Sub Focus are what "Best Breakthrough Producer" awards are made for.

CHASE & STATUS [ Ram Records | Bingo ] - UK

Saul Milton and Will Kennard really do start as they mean to go on. Since the birth of their drum and bass career in 2004, things have been moving extremely rapidly for this duo. Their first release on Renegade Hardware (a remix of Future Cut's 20/20) was followed with big tracks such as Love’s Theme, Iron Fist and Hoodrat on prominent labels such as Bingo, BC Presents and Habit. DJ's: Andy C, Mampi Swift, Friction, Zinc, Pendulum, Fabio and Bad Company have shown huge support for their releases which has only been further affirmed by regular radio airplay. Their sets reflect on a wide spectrum of drum&bass, as is shown in their Jan 2005 Studio Mix on DnB Arena, their guest mix on 1Xtra and of course with their live DJ sets. 2005 has been a good year for the duo with 'Barbarians', 'Menace' and, 'Glitch' all dropping on Renegade Hardware, 'Loader' on BC Presents, and a remix for Bingo of Mood 2 Swing's 'I Got Love'.

Forthcoming? ‘The Druids EP' on Bingo, 'The Ten Tonne EP' on Renegade Hardware, 'In Love' Ft Jenna G for her debut artist album and a brand new remix of 'Everyday' for Shy FX which will be dropping in the New Year.

VERSE [ Crunch | Renegade Hardware ] - UK

Verse joins a select crop of owners, an MC with a label as he works towards the first Crunch release. In between touring and travelling, Verse has found sufficient studio time to write alongside DKay, BCUK, Keaton, Bad Company and join the Fifth Element crew deep with Loxy & Ink. Postponed due to distribution issues that collective are far from buried we’re assured. Verse releases have rounded out across Renegade Hardware and Outbreak; he duly returns to productions for his personal ends, Crunch Recordings.

THE HEADHUNTERZ INC. [ Big H Recordings | Mantis Sound System ] - DC/NYC

Feight, Psychofly, Krazyglue, Jukata, and Quannum Logic found a working formula due to a shared affinity for hard-edged, upfront drum & bass, yet each has a different sound to their production. It is this diversity that gives Headhunterz Inc. a very unique sound and a wide arsenal of material to unleash on the drum & bass masses. Look out for the realease on Big H Recordings in December and also many other tunes to be released over the next year. Put your hard hats on cause these guys will destroy shit.

D-FECT [ EXBC | Delta Project ] - DC

Illeffect and Deinfamous are two of most well regarded drum and bass DJs in the DC and Baltimore area. As D-FECT, they have combined their incredible mixing and scratching talents to make any night they play a memorable one. Their individual performances at Five have had the dance floor moving, so come check out their Five collective debut!

BOBBY JAE [ Upfront | 5DNB ] - DC

Mastering the sounds of DC drum and bass, Bobby Jae never fails with his impeccable mixing and top-notch selection. Be sure to check out Bobby Jae's new highly anticipated mix, Upfront Drum n' Bass. This follow up to his URB Mix It Best classic, Perpetual Motion, is a veritable showcase of the liquid, funky sounds that many artists on the Upfront Industries roster are currently cultivating.

  • 2 weeks later...

this party is going to be amazing! if you're anywhere in the dc area i highly recommend you attend because in case you're unfamiliar with the story...

It all started with a demo CD being passed on by a friend to the biggest drum and bass DJ in the world, Ram Records’ boss Andy C in 2003, with a phone number badly scribbled on the cover.

Impressed by the quality of the production, Andy, after a few tries, managed to dial the right digits and talk to Subfocus. The result of that conversation was the release of ‘Down The Drain’ on Andy C and Red One’s experimental offshoot Frequency in 2003, and the start of Subfocus’ meteoric rise to fame in drum and bass circles.

Followed a couple of 12s on Frequency and Infrared, as eagerly received on dancefloors, and his exclusive signing and first contribution to Ram in 2004 with ‘Strobe’, one of the highlights of the Ram Raiders 6 EP.

His first 12 on Ram was another major step forward. ‘X Ray’, out in spring 2005 and described as ‘Zombie Nation remade by Seattle grungers’, became one of the year’s anthems, enjoyed the rare privilege of being chosen as ‘Single Of The Week’ on alternative tastemaker Zane Lowe’s Radio 1 show and even got some daytime plays. He was consequently asked to remix The Prodigy’s ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ for their Greatest Hits package.

Subfocus released one more single in 2005, the awesome ‘Frozen Solid’, while enjoying travelling all over the world on a busy DJ schedule. Kick-starting 2006 with an impressive remix of Dr Octagon out-there ‘Aliens’, Subfocus is about to unleash another killer track ‘Airplane’. Already previewed on Andy C’s ‘Nightlife 3’ mix CD, the track features gigantic synths and vocal hooks giving it the same irresistible appeal as last year’s ‘X Ray’.

So what makes Subfocus so special? Passionate about music from an early age, Subfocus played bass in a band at school, before sitting in front of an old Acorn Electron computer at 13 teaching himself the art of sampling and producing. He went on studying acoustics at college. This eclectic formation, allied with an insatiable musical curiosity, with interest ranging from rock to experimental electronic music, explains how Subfocus production manage to sound pristine, unique and strangely accessible.
