Report: “Shogun†Injured, May Be Scratched from UFC 76 Debut

Posted by UFC Junkie on June 28, 2007 at 9:01 am ET

070403rua.jpgMauricio “Shogun†Rua (16-2 MMA, 0-0 UFC), who recently signed with the UFC, may be scractched from his upcoming debut with the organization because of a knee injury.Rua, who was supposed to fight at UFC 76 in September, should know the extent of the injury in the next couple days, according to GracieFighter.com.

PRIDE’s 2005 Grand Prix Tournament winner had fought for the Japanese-based fight organization since October 2003 and racked up victories over such notables as current UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton Jackson, Ricardo Arona and Antonio Rogerio “Minotoro†Nogueira.

The 25-year-old is a member of the famed Chute Box team and has won 12 of his past 13 fights — nine of which came via knockout or technical knockout. UFC president White said he considers Rua an immediate contender for the light-heavyweight belt.

UFC 76 is expected to take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif., on Sept. 22. Mike Swick and Evan Tanner are also expected to fight at the event, though their opponents are not yet known.

In addition to the news about Rua’s injury, the report discusses further splintering of the once-mighty Brazilian Top Team.

GracieFighter.com has confirmed that Rodrigo “Minotauro†Nogueira and Paul Filho have left BTT:

Rumors that Rodrigo “Minotauro†Nogueira has left Brazilian Top Team have been confirmed. Nogueira now heads his own team and does his training at other gyms. A split between Murillo Bustamante and Mario Sperry has resulted in Sperry’s ouster. Paulo Filho and others that made the core of the team have also left. BTT now is being controlled primarly by Murillo Bustamante and Bebeo Duarte.

UFCjunkie.com Source: Verbal Agreement Reached for Chuck Liddell vs. Wanderlei Silva UFC 76 Fight

Posted by UFC Junkie on July 11, 2007 at 11:27 am ET

070708liddell.jpgFormer UFC light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell (20-4 MMA, 14-3 UFC) and former longtime PRIDE Fighting Championships middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva (31-7-1 MMA, 1-2 UFC) have verbally agreed to a fight that will take place at UFC 76 in September. That’s according to a source close to the Chute Box team who recently spoke to UFCjunkie.com (www.ufcjunkie.com).

According to the source, the two fighters have agreed on “numbers” and a verbal agreement has been reached. Additionally, the fight likely will be signed once the Brazilian Silva returns to the U.S., the source said.

UFC 76 takes place in Anaheim, Calif., on Sept. 22.The Silva-Liddell fight is perhaps the most-hyped MMA event never to have happened. The fight has long been rumored, and during a UFC 61 event last year, UFC president Dana White even announced that fight would finally take place. However, he later blamed PRIDE officials for keeping it from happening. (PRIDE has since been purchased by Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta, primary owners of the UFC.)

Rumors recently popped up that stated UFC 76 was the most likely date for the fight. However, just last month, White told reporters on a media conference call that there was no truth to the reports and that Liddell probably wouldn’t return to the Octagon until November.

However, barring any injuries or scheduling conlicts, Sept. 22 is the target date, our source said.

Liddell, who had held the UFC’s light heavyweight title since April 2005, suffered a first-round technical knockout to Quinton Jackson at UFC 71. The May 26 loss was his first defeat in eight fights.

Silva, a Brazilian Jiu-Jistu black belt and one of PRIDE’s most successful fighters, is coming off brutal back-to-back losses to Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic and Dan Henderson. Despite the losses, he remains one of the top-ranked 205-pound fighters anywhere in the world.

With Shogun coming in now, I don't know if Chuck has a chance for a comeback anymore. Rua is incredible though - especially since he is so younh. When he gets healthy, Rampage better hope he can successfully duck him.

I was also surprised by Minotauro Nogueira in his UFC debut, as he fought really poorly. He's lucky to have won.

nog should have been TKO'd/ref stoppage in the 1st round, that was bs.... if it was any other fighter not getting paid 200K for his ufc debut the ref would have stopped it

but then again herring is a total retard for not finishing the fight on the ground and letting big nog up

battle of the double leg take down attempts: ortiz/evans II~! :blown:

CSAC: Sean Sherk, Hermes Franca Both Fail UFC 73 Drug Tests

Posted by UFC Junkie on July 19, 2007 at 3:50 pm ET

070719ufc73.jpgUFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk and his UFC 73 opponent, Hermes Franca, have both failed drug tests and have been suspended for approximately a year, according to the California State Athletic Commission.

The two 155-pound fighters competed in a main-card fight at UFC 73, which took place July 7 at ARCO Arena in Sacramento, Calif. Sherk ultimately won a five-round unanimous decision to retain his championship. He won the then-vacant title by defeating Kenny Florian at UFC 64.

Sherk tested positive for elevated levels of Nandrolone Metabolite, and Franca tested positive Drostanolone. Both are anabolic steroids.

UFCjunkie.com received the following from the CSAC:

  • Sean Sherk
, the reigning UFC World Lightweight Champion, who last competed on July 7, 2007 in Sacramento, has tested positive for Nandrolone Metabolite. He has been fined $2,500. His suspension period runs from the conclusion of his bout on July 7, 2007 through the remainder of his licensing year which is June 26, 2008. Furthermore, he has been assessed an additional 10 days in order to fulfill the terms of his suspension (365 total days). The additional days will be added at the beginning of his next licensing year when he reapplies.

    .

Normal levels of Nandrolone range from 2 ng/mL (average person) to 6 ng/mL (athlete engaged in rigorous activity). Mr. Sherk’s reported level certified by the Director of Science and Technology from the laboratory that conducted the tests was 12 ng/mL. Both the “A” sample and “B” sample were tested and confirmed as positive.

    .

  • Hermes Franca
, who last competed for UFC on July 7, 2007, has tested positive for Drostanolone. He has been fined $2,500. His suspension period runs from the conclusion of his bout on July 7, 2007 through the end of his licensing year which is July 5, 2008.

Sherk was tentatively scheduled to defend his title against B.J. Penn at UFC 78 on Nov. 17. However, it’s unlikely he even hangs onto the belt at this point.

Sherk and Franca will both an opportunity to appeal the suspensions and fines, but Franca already admitted his guilt in an open apology he originally submitted to MMAWeekly.com. That apology was also sent to UFCjunkie.com and can be found after the link below.

*Chorus*

Steroids in the MMA game.

Things have changed, no they aint the same.

And now we need a scapegoat yeah whos to blame?

Im thinking Dana White, cause of success and fame.

I remember back in the day when the UFC was the only bet.

We had Royce Gracie, eighty pounds soaking wet.

The matchups were crazy, fighters of all shapes and size.

With a kick to the nuts and a poke to the eyes.

Now that things are different fighters now realize

Its all about the money, and the Pay-Per-View buys.

(Repeat Chorus)

So now with the fighter we have a new breed.

With Diaz, Sanchez, and Rogan all smoking weed.

But a new plan we have, soon to be deployed.

And you cant tell Dana or he'll be annoyed.

Can I hit that syringe? I cant smoke steroids...

Now here comes the piss test, "Got any clean piss I can borrow boys?"

(Chorus one last time)

Its rampant with fighters, regardless of camp.

And we may very well, see a new lightweight champ.

Cause its no longer about your hard work and condition.

As long as you dodge the Athletic Commission.

Oh, and now you got caught, dont start up your bitchin.

You knew what to expect before you accepted this mission

he got absolutely robbed. I'll give the last round to bisping, but the first two were all hamill

worst bust ever

bisping has no class... how could he say "I just outboxed him" during the post-fight interview with rogan.. what a dumb, arrogant piece of shit..

i lost a ton of respect for dana white and ufc in general.. you know there was no way they were letting a decision go against bisping in england and jeopardize losing the english ufc following.. if bisping was american you KNOW the outcome would have been different..
