It's akin to miners seeing a lump of coal and carefully shaping it into a diamond. The coal couldn't do it on it's own, so the miners took over and engineered it.Pop stars on their own aren't that intelligent usuall. Britney, Xtina, J-ho, etc, are all the products of focus groups, market research, advertising techniques, studio and visual processing, and other things that would make your jaw drop.Let's put it this way, some of these people could make even me look good. Believe me, I've seen vocalists and musicians who can give most pop artists a run for their money skill-wise, they just lack proper marketing.In some cases they don't want it. They just want to do their thing, and not have some PR flack or marketdroid telling them what to do, or some A & R dick saying 'you're good, baby, but we need a little more pop sensibility!', and having their work and style compromised in the name of selling more CDs to suburban white kids.The 'true artists' I guess you could call them. With J-Lo, it was just a matter of "OK she's got an iota of talent, plus she's latin. We've exploited and co-opted black music, the hippie counterculture, the disco craze, and had the British Invasion, let's move on to Latin people!'
