Putin does not claim to know anything about any al Qaeda link. That Saddam was planning to attack us is not news. Iraqi anti-aircraft shot at American airplanes almost daily, and they did attempt an assasination of Bush Sr. We knew this. Putin is saying that Saddam was trying to figure out how to send special forces teams into the US to mess with us like we were messing with his scud launchers at the time in Western Iraq.To recap, congress does not think that there was a link. Putin did not say that there was a link. Bush says that there was a link and that the proof is that he said so.(A fun footnote is that Putin said this nugget about Iraqi special forces in an interview in Kazakhstan days ago and hasn't repeated it again on the record. Oddly enough there is almost zero coverage in US news and there is a lot of coverage in international news like this story, that the State Department doesn't know WTF Putin is talking about.
