Spurrier: No encore as Gators football coach

FLORIDA TODAY Staff Report

Steve Spurrier won six official Southeastern Conference titles and one national championship in 12 years as head coach of the University of Florida.

He also won the school's first Heisman Trophy in 1966 and coached Danny Wuerffel to UF's only other one.

But that will be it for the Head Ball Coach.

Spurrier, considered the frontrunner to replace Ron Zook at the end of the season, said he wasn't going to go down that road again.

"I have informed Jeremy Foley, our athletic director, that I am withdrawing from consideration for our head coaching position at my alma mater," Spurrier said in a statement released by the athletic department.
