Kanye West has embraced the dancefloor

Words: Ben Murphy

In an extraordinary move, America’s premier hip-hop uber-producer Kanye West has been bitten by the house bug and hooked up with Daft Punk to crank out an electro disco cut entitled ‘Stronger’.

DJMag cornered him in Las Vegas at the weekend, quizzing him on his upbringing in Chicago and whether the city’s house music scene has ever been an influence. He enigmatically hinted at a new house-style tune in his repertoire.

“The next single I’m dropping really has a house feel,†Kanye revealed. “It has a four four beat, one half of the song has, and the other half is my type of drums so I mixed it up. You’ll definitely see that influence on it.â€

DJMag had a chance to check out the track at an exclusive Kanye West live performance, which was part of Heineken’s Thirst Studio Global Sessions contest. Taking place in Vegas over the bank holiday weekend, the competition set out to determine the best new producers on the planet.

As a hugely successful and original producer himself, Kanye was asked to appear live, and didn’t disappoint, with a truly electrifying and charismatic performance in which he dropped ‘Stronger’ — the track busting out of the speakers like a particularly virulent strain of Ed Banger electro filth and classic hip-hop.

Tentatively scheduled for release on 1st June, ‘Stronger’ will be the first single from West’s forthcoming ‘Graduation’ album — the final part of his college-related trilogy after ‘The College Dropout’ and ‘Late Registration’. It samples heavily from Daft Punk’s classic track ‘Harder Better Faster Stronger’, from their sophomore LP ‘Discovery’.

Daft Punk have given their blessing to West’s use of the track, with the funky cyborgs even appearing alongside the rapper in his forthcoming video, fully decked out in those distinctive helmets. The hook-up certainly bodes well for more electro and house collaborations between rappers and dancefloor producers in the future.

This will be good..Kanye is maybe the best multi-talented producer in Music right now, that transcends genre's.

This could be very good for electronic music. Somehow, I feel better about this than Diddy doing the collab with Deep Dish. I have much more respect for Kanye and his talent.

"let's get up and let's get i'll!", LOL

and Prince Quick Mix. His discography is unparalled; hip-hop, house, breaks, rock.

The way I see things is that dance music needs people with the business acumen of Kanye and Diddy. No real idea why Diddy's thing never panned out, but I'm willing to accept Kayne having a go at house sounds.

Likewise...regarding Kanye. Diddy's foray into dance was too gimmicky.

Diddy's foray almost seemed like "Well I did ecstasy so I probably should kick out a dance album".

kanye's new song is pretty tight. i might not like his antics, but he's a hell of a producer.

looking foward to hearing daft's and kanye's collaboration.

We all say stupid shit at times...he just had a much larger audience to hear it...still love him as a musican and producer. Can't wait for this new one...hope the house colab. doesn't get too electro-ish.

Has anyone heard it yet? I think it's awful. I can't believe Daft Punk not only allowed that but will supposedly make an appearance in the video for the song.

Realy? I think it spanks that shit morillo put out with puffy...but then again...if you dont like Kanye to begin with you'll be biased...this song doesn't try to be too much house or too much hip-hop...to be honest its more pop-hop to me but I like the flow and production of it...not something that is going to make my jaw drop but its cool.

I am not a big fan of morillo of puffy, so I haven't heard the song in question and have nothing to compare it to. Just hearing Kanye's song in general - I didn't like it at all. To me it sounded like they slowed down Daft Punk's song and just put a poorly edited freestyle rap over it. I am open to every format of music, but I couldn't even make it through the whole song. Maybe because I like Daft Punk too much and it seemed like it was ruined??? ;)

Ya its what I've been hearing other people say about the slowed down effect on this track. I haven't been a fan of Daft since Homework/Roule days...their prodcutions in the last 6 years have just not done anything for me so I guess thats why it doesn't really bother me too much.
