GENEVA (Reuters) - The United States has 90 guns for every 100 citizens, making it the most heavily armed society in the world, a report released on Tuesday said.

U.S. citizens own 270 million of the world's 875 million known firearms, according to the Small Arms Survey 2007 by the Geneva-based Graduate Institute of International Studies.

About 4.5 million of the 8 million new guns manufactured worldwide each year are purchased in the United States, it said.

"There is roughly one firearm for every seven people worldwide. Without the United States, though, this drops to about one firearm per 10 people," it said.

India had the world's second-largest civilian gun arsenal, with an estimated 46 million firearms outside law enforcement and the military, though this represented just four guns per 100 people there. China, ranked third with 40 million privately held guns, had 3 firearms per 100 people.

Germany, France, Pakistan, Mexico, Brazil and Russia were next in the ranking of country's overall civilian gun arsenals.

On a per-capita basis, Yemen had the second most heavily armed citizenry behind the United States, with 61 guns per 100 people, followed by Finland with 56, Switzerland with 46, Iraq with 39 and Serbia with 38.

France, Canada, Sweden, Austria and Germany were next, each with about 30 guns per 100 people, while many poorer countries often associated with violence ranked much lower. Nigeria, for instance, had just one gun per 100 people.

"Firearms are very unevenly distributed around the world. The image we have of certain regions such as Africa or Latin America being awash with weapons -- these images are certainly misleading," Small Arms Survey director Keith Krause said.

"Weapons ownership may be correlated with rising levels of wealth, and that means we need to think about future demand in parts of the world where economic growth is giving people larger disposable income," he told a Geneva news conference.

The report, which relied on government data, surveys and media reports to estimate the size of world arsenals, estimated there were 650 million civilian firearms worldwide, and 225 million held by law enforcement and military forces.

Five years ago, the Small Arms Survey had estimated there were a total of just 640 million firearms globally.

"Civilian holdings of weapons worldwide are much larger than we previously believed," Krause said, attributing the increase largely to better research and more data on weapon distribution networks.

Only about 12 percent of civilian weapons are thought to be registered with authorities.

Oh god here we go again.

Does it really matter now if we're armed? No one is going to give up their weapons, since they don't want to be disarmed with armed people around him.

Stalemate at best.

Fuck, we live in South Florida. In certain neighborhoods I wouldn't feel comfortable without some iron.

Hell, in Overtown I'd want an armed escort too.

We'll hash it out, you'll point out a bunch of gun-related crimes, we'll point out a bunch of situations where a gun saved lives, and I'll post some inspirational graphics from www.a-human-right.com .

Thread over.

I'm all for more guns... my personal preference is sniper rifles. I'm even down for some type of Apocalypto target practice range.

Wait - gun prohibitionists frequently argue that the mere presence of a gun can trigger violent crime, but these people are saying that guns make you rich? I'm so confused!

so?

what's the problem?

Americans are timid, or did you already forget?

Of course we are. We tolerate a lot. We also are the most generous nation on the planet. But let's ignore the latter...just because it doesn't fit your template of America sucks.

So, what's the problem again?

Remember, guns don't kill, people do! Disarming the law abiding citizens in the hope to limit criminals access to guns is just plain..............ta'ta'ta'....stupid!

That is unless we hope the criminials will somehow be overwhelmed w/ guilt that they lay down their guns in place of flowers.

If I get home to find my wife slamming some dude on our new loveseat, I don't throw out the loveseat...I throw out the wife.

capisch?

Ciao!

What you think?

Well, basic black goes with everything, but your AK certainly makes a unique fashion statement.

Sorry Biff, did I call you names?

And....... with all the positive, optimistic views you share here I can't believe you claim you don't slam your country. that's all you seem to do. I just ask why you don't put at least an equal amount of energy towards our enemies? I too have issues w/ my nation, it's leaders and many citizens and illegals....but I find the actions of our enemies much repulsive, hence my focus on their bullshit. I just wonder why "passionate" folks like yourself choose the easiest path rather than the more relevant one. It's easy to bash America. Doing so is not impressive. Might be theraputic for you, but boring....zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Meet me @ the 3rd street park bathroom,,,,wait until you hear "tap,tap,tap........zip.......squish,squish,squish,,,isk-isk,,,squirt-squirt".....LMMFAO!!!

yah well I am with the responsible people having guns as well. Shit since i bought my own place, i have a piece for needed purposes. I have no problem with guns its the one stance that i am for, responsible people who own a home should have them. I mean the criminal who may break into my house has one, and if something like that ever happens, im sure not gonna be the one getting killed. The criminals no matter what will always be able to get guns, kinda like one can always get drugs. Since this is the case, I, as a regular person need to protect my property.

Not to mention the palm beach shooting center is awesome. 5 minutes from my place, and you can let out alot of aggression into a osama bin laden target.
