Senate approves Lieberman resolution on Iran

By ANDREW MIGA | Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The Senate on Wednesday approved a resolution urging the State Department to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organization, a move aimed at bringing additional economic pressure on Iran.

The measure passed 76-22.

The proposal by Sen. Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., and Jon Kyl, R-Ariz., attracted overwhelming bipartisan support. But a small group of Democrats said they feared that labeling the state-sponsored organization a terrorist group could be interpreted as a congressional authorization of military force in Iran.

Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., was among those voting against the amendment. Dodd referred to the 2002 congressional vote authorizing the use of force that led to President Bush's decision to invade Iraq.

"We shouldn't repeat our mistakes and enable this president again," Dodd said in a statement.

Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., branded the Lieberman-Kyl measure as Vice President Dick Cheney's "fondest pipe dream."

Lieberman and Kyl have said their resolution does not authorize the use of force against Iran. It was instead crafted to cut off financial support for Iran, they said.

"It is vital to the national security interests of the United States that the Iranian government not be allowed to prevail in its proxy war against us in Iraq," Lieberman said in a statement. "This amendment makes it clear both to our enemies and our friends that the United States will not retreat in the face of Iranian terrorism."

The Revolutionary Guard is training, arming, funding and directing extremists inside Iraq who are killing U.S. troops, Lieberman has said.

The Bush administration is considering wide-ranging sanctions against the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps' Quds force, which is accused of supporting insurgents in Iraq, by naming it an international terrorist group.

The Senate vote came one day after Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressed the U.N. General Assembly.

During a tense appearance at Columbia University Monday, Ahmadinejad defended Holocaust revisionists and raised questions about who carried out the Sept. 11 attacks. His visit this week has drawn thousands of protesters.

The Iranian leader has denied the chief accusations against Iran, that it is providing weapons to kill U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, supporting terrorism or breaking international law by developing nuclear weapons.

Actualy the Iranian government (not the people) breaking UN Resolutions 685, 676, 671, 651, 642, 631, 620, 619, 612, 598, 588, 582, 540, 522, 514, 479, 461, 457, and 348 from 1946-1991 should have been your first sign.

If that wasn't your first sign then UN Resolution 1737 and 1698 back in 2006 should have been your second sign.

Just my 2 cents

Also, the "Death To America" chants should have been a sign as well.

The Revolutionary Guard is training, arming, funding and directing extremists inside Iraq who are killing U.S. troops, Lieberman has said.

Maybe he should have said:

The United States is training, arming, funding and directing extremists inside Iraq who used to kill U.S. troops, and probably will in the future

Hmm. I want to break down a few things for some people.

Iran is mostly Shiite. Saudi Arabia is mostly Sunni. We are helping the Sunnis in Iraq.

But.....

The Shiites were the ones who were "oppressed" by Saddam's government. We go in there to free them, only to turn against them?

In Iraq most of the insurgent violence directed at the American military has come from Sunni forces, and not from Shiites. Confused yet?

Remember, we are now teamed up with the Sunnis. The people who were killing us.

So we are now arming and training the people that were killing us earlier. The people that are against the current "democratic" Iraqi government (The one we helped set up. The democratic government. We're helping it's enemies. Go Democracy!).

Oh yeah, the majority of the 9/11 hijackers were from Saudi Arabia. They are Sunni. You know, those Sunni guys we've teamed up with, and are now giving weapons and training to.

Yep, Al-Qaida is Sunni. Those guys we're helping. :)

You know who else we once gave weapons and training too? Before 9/11? Well gosh darn it, those Al-Queda guys! The Sunnis! Man, our government really likes to help those guys out. And those guys really like to kill us.

?

Maybe someone should approve a resolution against our own stupidity & hypocracy. I believe our own government is a threat to US national security. Maybe we should throw them in Guantanamo.

I'm thinking this nation couldn't be so stupid. So the only reason I can come up with for arming different groups at the same time is to continue the military industrial complex... to create new enemies and warring parties. Take the touting of the success in Anbar province... it sounds good to most americans... in reality we are turning a blind eye to sunni's ethnic cleansing of the entire area. They are pushing out shiites in the hundreds of thousands. But then again most americans do not watch independent news sources so they don't get this type of news. They don't know the demographics of the area. They don't know that al Qaeda is a Sunni organization. Just like they didn't know that taking out Saddam would just make Iran more powerful by default. Our intelligence services cannot be so stupid... at some point this is planned.

After we take out Iran... which country will benefit by default? Pakistan... Saudi Arabia? Then we'll make enemies of our "friends". Just like Saddam Hussein was our "friend". Look at the pattern ladies and gentlemen. The strategy we have in the Middle East is pleasing to al Qaeda and organization with its leaders hiding out in Pakistan and receiving funding from Saudi Arabia.
