Thought I would share this info:

http://www.sleeplessnight.org/about.html

On November third, your dreams will manifest into reality. Music and dance, art and culture will merge into one spectacular thirteen-hour event, overtaking the entire city of Miami Beach. Coupled with the bonus hour from the time change and the participation of businesses citywide, this event will be a complete cultural takeover and celebration of the 25th hour. You will not want Sleepless Night to end. One adventurous night of daring and innovative entertainment – all free – at indoor and outdoor venues concentrated into four areas of Miami Beach: North Beach, Collins Park, Lincoln Road and Ocean Drive.

Traveling theater shuttle buses transport insomniac participants to and from the four zones of activity. You may have a fantasy of getting lost in an enormous inflated environment of pure color and light, catching your breath as dancers descend from the darkness above, walking in the Western Hemisphere’s longest fashion runway in personalized silver couture or following enormous dancing insects in the pre-dawn starlight. Or your dreams may be to settle back and enjoy classical music concerts, dance performances, movies, comedy, theater and provocative performance art.

The night is yours to decide. Savor one or two special experiences or get lost in the cultural kaleidoscope of Sleepless Night. When you need to refresh, take advantage of the food, drink and hotel specials, then treat yourself to interactive video installations, blush-inducing acrobats, meditative jazz and driving world beats. Plan your itinerary or go with the flow, but rest up now: Sleepless Night will be here in the blink of an eye.

They could have done a better job on the whole PR end. I heard about this a dog's age ago but the organization has been lacking in getting the word out. The Shelborne via Dennis has done more PR for them in passing than the Sleepless Night people have deliberately.

Well, that was great fun. About walked my feet off, and had a few mishaps, but all in all, it seemed to do really well. There were TONS of people out. Despite the fears on the marketing end, it seemed like they actually had more people than they expected. Almost everything we went to was packed beyond its limits. As soon as I recover, I will post the pics.

No, because I don't care to listen to socialist radio.

Yeah I said it. What are any of you gonna do about it? Kick my ass? Yeah, sure.

I caught something about some psychedelic inflatable tunnel or something on NPR. Did anyone check that out?

We tried, but by the time we got to it, they had cut off the line. There was a line around the corner and down the block for the entire night.

Reading comments from the blogosphere. Overall consensus seems to be "horrid", "embarrassing", etc.

Heh.

You know what I think of bloggers...

Personally, I saw literally thousands of people out having a blast.

Tell the bloggers to get off their asses and get out and live a little rather than thinking that anyone wants to listen to their idiotic ramblings and then maybe I'd respect their opinions more.

Unfortunately, blog is the magic word these days and their commentary carries weight.

My idea is that if they do this next year, remember that there's a whole area encompassing Wynwood and my hood that was sadly ignored.

Dumbass, it was put on by Miami Beach. You want your own thing, get your city to do it!

In my view, there were 3 main issues.

1) Not enough "sleepless" stuff. That is, it was very front-loaded. Lots of stuff to do until around midnight or 1am, but it slowed down after that.

2) They were obviously not prepared for the crowds they got. While it is a very good thing that they had more people than planned for, it kinda effed things up for us. I don't really hold anyone accountable for this, though. If they had planned for too many, and not as many showed up, then that would be a huge waste of money. So, I think there wasn't much to be done about that.

3) They need to be stricter about people who want to claim to be participating, but really aren't doing much. There were a few places that were just doing basically whatever they usually do and claimed that it was some Sleepless Night event. If you want to be included in the advertising materials and on the list of events, you need to do something really special.

Other than those three things, the first of which was really the only major one, we had a great time.

One of the sponsors was the Greater Miami Convention and Visitors Bureau.

"Miami and The Beaches".

I still think it's sad since the art district of sorts is certainly not on Miami Beach. And I'm not the only one who feels that way. No matter, Basel is soon and then I can charge $30 to park in my spot at my apt :).

Did anyone else actually go to any of these, or are you allowing other people who you don't even know to tell you what your opinion is?

I know it's anathema to criticize anything on the Beach, but this is a good example of the "mixed" reviews. Seems like anyone who did have a good time just got lucky and found the right event.

SoTP happens to be one of two well-written blogs in town. The guy writing t sees Miami as more than 23rd Street to South Pointe on Miami Beach. The rest of the blogs in town are just dilettantes jerking themselves off in a orgy of self-abuse.

I sent two people Beachside thinking they'd have fun, and they said "very disorganized". I was tied up with business (I have to make a living somehow) on my side of the bridge so I didn't participate.

Basel, for the art fiends, is next up, and is well-executed, thankfully.

I'm sure you did. I'm not running around saying it sucked, because due to prior commitments with Jay-Boy-Z and Robbie, I could not make it, but I was just saying that the scuttlebutt has been mixed at best. My perspective is that since it was sponsored in part by a county-level quasi-governmental (god that was a mouthful) entity, it could have included activities in our very own arts district, which even though right now it is on the way up, it needs all the help it can get.
