copleyc
There are loads and loads of really really good restaurants in DC.best thing to do is have a look at the entertainment section of www.washingtonpost.com personally if money is really no object I'd really recommend Citronelle in Georgetown. other good ones there are Tahoga, Mendocino Grill; downtown: DC Coast is good, Ten Penh is supposed to be v. good too (asian fusion), Nora's in Dupont Circle is excellent, Perry's and Cashion's in Adams Morgan also good. millele
i completely agreee w/ dirtyslapper, particularly w/ the citronelle, perry's and cashion's suggestions. you should also look up www.zagat.com. a really good italian place in dupont cirlce you should try is al tiramisu, on p st just west of the circle 1-2 blocks.and, for some reason, adams morgan is known for its 2 ethiopian restaurants, on 18th st, across the street from each other, almost. while i don't know anyone who's crazy about it, it's still worth doing at least once! you eat w/ your hands, using a spongy-bread thingy to pick up the food. i forget the names of the restaurants, but just ask anyone in adams morgan. copleyc
oh and Obelisk (also on P St just off Dupont Circle) is another extremely good, but pricey Italian.

laurensomers
An excellent Tuscan resturant is Iricchi - I think it may be on 19th street (I know its right near the Palm). This place has excellent Italian food - very delicious, very $$$.

a1wave
If do want to dare Ethiopian/Eritrean food, the restaurants to go to in my opinion are Harambe (18th and U St) or Addis Ababa (on 18th) ... Meskerem, Red Sea and Fasika are close to 18th and Columbia and are also good...
