What I mean is that I think a lot of music genres grow out of artists using specific instruments in specific ways (take for example acid house). There are whole genres built on one specific Roland instrument bank. So was Techno a twist on what other people were already doing? Or do you think it was born of pure creative experimentation with sound?just curious. The whole birth of techno is a little grey for me. The whole birth of techno is a little grey for me.Well as far as i know the Roland 808 had quiet a bit to do with the birth of techno. There were basic drum machine used to do the electro thing (but they sounded naff), so when the 808/909 (which was released over here first) came on the scene it opened up the technology. Not too sure it was a virgin birth, have you seen the documentory Modulator.. it's well worth seeing if not. They do cover some really interesting ground. Yeh check it out, i am the same i love hearing about it all.In the Documentory (Dont know if you get the Sundance channel on cable but they show it every now and again), they do give Roland props... but IMO they dont get enough... even now all you here is the 808 drum set, in hip hop, house, techno, trance, hard house... just about everywhere... i don't go anywhere without my 505. Bands like Throbbing Gristle and Einsterzende Neubauten (sp?) and Kraftwerk were not shake-shake-shaking their booty while they were busy shaping music into a whole new genre.These are the sounds that built the framework for Techno and Trance - not Disco.Check your music history. Daft Punk, Cassius et al.It has played a big part in house music.But i reckon that evrn without Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Frankie, Jessy Saunders and the rest.. we would have still got top where we are now. This music works, it's just something about the 4/4 and the repetative nature which touches most people. spoonyd Posted January 6 Report Share Posted January 6 I agree about house music - I just think it's a little of an overstatement that Disco started it all.Certainly house music owes much it's origins to Disco. Being a frenchie, you'd be the authority on the disco flavoured house styles.Oddly, though when you analyse it - you'd expect that hip-hop grew out of the same roots, but in my opinion much of the music took it pointers from the German sounds. Electro especially was born in sounds of Kraftwerk. The entire break-beat genre is built out of this.Admittedly there's been considerable cross-polinization of sounds along the way, but we're talking about roots here.Sometimes It's hard to keep the two camps seperate as they evolved at the same time - but there are two distinct sounds. The soulful house and disco sounds to come out of America, built on r&b... and the cold calculated hard edged beats coming out of Germany that spawned techno, electro, industrial and trance.I personally put very strong links between early industrial music and trance. back2basics- Posted January 6 Report Share Posted January 6 I think we can say house spawned from disco... as far as i (and evry article i have read) can establish, the disco back lash in Chicago (remember those images of people burning disco records in soldiers fields?), and Frankie/Jessey looping disco track (as we know the beat structure is already there in Disco loop it and her presto a 4/4 beat). My room mate used to go to school with FN and JS and i have herd some of his old-school (i mean 70's) tapes from the wareHOUSE (where the name came from). And they sound very similar to the French/Armand Van Heldon sound.As for Techno, here is how i see it. I was into electro and Kraftwerk obviousley had a big influence... but techno came out of detroit, before Germany.. because of the link with electro...
