mik-e_smilez Posted July 31 Report Share Posted July 31 For Immediate release July 30, 2000 The Mishpucha Presents: NYC: NO DANCING ALLOWED An evening of film, dancing, and informed discussion PANEL OF NIGHTLIFE LEADERS AND CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS TO ADDRESS CONTROVERSIAL NYC CABARET LAWS Mishpucha, the non-profit NYC-based music community, will present NYC: NO DANCING ALLOWED, a point-blank discussion of the history, implementation, and ramifications of NYC's controversial cabaret laws. A panel discussion with leading members of Manhattan's nightlife, cultural, and legal communities will be preceded by a documentary on the hotly-contested laws, and will all be followed by a slamming (and legal) dance party. Indeed, dancing has no business being regulated by any governmental agency. With NYC: NO DANCING ALLOWED we call all members of NYC's music, dance, nightlife, and civil rights communities to come together to learn more about these laws and, in this all-important election year, map out a course of action to either amend or repeal these unreasonably prohibitive laws. SCHEDULE: 7:30 - 8:00 pm: NYC filmmakers Juli Berg and Candace Corelli will present a portion of their upcoming documentary No Dancing Allowed, featuring interviews with local artists, politicians, and promoters. Following the film Julie and Candice will be on hand to take questions. Plus, a special guest will be performing for the last hour of the night. PANEL PARTICIPANTS INCLUDE: ROBERT BOOKMAN is the New York Nightlife Association's legal counsel. ETHAN BROWN is an editor at New York Magazine and actively covers New York City nightlife issues. He will be moderating the panel. JOHN DAVIS is a British promoter who arrived in NYC in 1995 and started the now world-renowned Body & Soul in 1996 with DJ/Producer Francois K. NORMAN SIEGEL is a committed civil rights activist who was formerly the Executive Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union and is currently running for the office of Public Advocate. ROBERT PRITCHARD is co-founder of the Dance Liberation Front which has staged innovative protests against the cabaret laws, including doing the Hokey-Pokey at City Hall and a conga line march through the streets of the Lower East Side. DAVID RABIN is currently serving as the President of the New York Nightlife Association and is owner of Lotus, Union Bar and Spa. NICKY SIANO is an NYC DJ, producer, and house music pioneer who has performed at renowned clubs for over 30 years including The Loft, The Roundtable, Studio 54, and the Gallery, which he partly owned. He helped invent the classic '70s house music sound and helped Frankie Knuckles and Larry Levan establish their DJ careers. MISHPUCHA is a non-profit music industry community of over 100 record label people, artists, DJs, promoters, managers and writers who champion innovative music and encourage music activism from the music industry.
