What a funny club.

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone. Another week of work has arrived for me after a interesting weekend.

My sister asked me to come with her to Tequila Joe's in Newark.

OMG

what a trip this place was!! If you ever been to a club in PA this is what the people here where like. Everyone seemed to be wearing styles from like 5 years ago (To each his own though) You go down downstairs and there's like a mosh pit with people punching each other and the DJ was mixing yes mixing rock. I think he was playing the new system of the down with Etown concrete. I kid ran up to me with a bloody nose and pushed me so I jumped rite into the pit. HA what fun!

Then there's this silly little 80's room with pictures of cartoons all over the walls super funny. they also had a karaoke room with some wanna be eminem guy singing blink 182 song.

Onto the club room.. soooo incredibly funny! I swear to god it seemed like they where playing a Webster hall cd from like 4 years ago. haha.

I stayed till like 2 then I went to SF only took me like 20 min to get there.. I would actually go back so corny it was fun.

Someone actually IM'd me about this post and good Lord do I ever find it funny. I haevn't been to Tequila Joe's in ages but that place use to be the friggin best. It was an "anything goes" from drugs to sex, atmosphere. People dressed from 80's style to punk rock to ghetto bitches and glamour kids.

Granted, the place isn't the most appealing to the eye from indoor to out and from person to person but it didn't matter. Sure, the DJs suck. I'll admit it. If I had to hear "Castles in the Sky", "My Love is your Love" and that damn Jennifer Lopez, J. lo, whatever the frig her name is, I was gonna scream. The back right speaker upstairs was the one that was busted for months. Guess it might be again. All you heard was "boom boom boom". Pitiful.

As for "Mosh Pit", I dont really know how you could call it that. 8/10 times, people are merely dancing on it. Only when a song thats really popular or old school from House of Pain or NIN did the crowd start "moshing". I use to love that!

I'm sure it's changed a lot and I wish it would go back to the old days. The days when Joe was much cooler, the back area was open and better known as "Crack Valley" and crowd was cool to be around. Drink prices, you can't beat though and that's to this year even. $1.50 before 11 when the same drink in NYC, even an open bar considering you gotta tip, would cost at least 4 times that.

They need to put the swing back in the karaokee room and get rid of that guy that runs it cuz all he use to sing was "Fuel". Other then that, I love'd that place. It's perfect for an early night.....but after all the drinking you can do, never an early morning.

Oh and Im gonna post a pic of that guy later that I think is your "Eminem look alike". Im wondering if its this pompous ass I know...hahahah

~kAt~ *how many hookers did you count by nights end??*

Oh and as a side note.......I'd ALWAYS pick TJ's over SF! hahaa

Hahahaha.....I used to go there last fall with my k head exboyfriend. That place was a complete crack factory, people bumping all over the place. I have not been there since last October (2000), is it still filled with crackheads?

Wow ... could it be there's allot of Tequila Joe's heads out there? it seems to be! Ive never seen anything posted about the place but I could see myself going there allot more...to relax very cheap drinkss! the place has potential and the crowd is so fucking weird (so am i) I am not a big SF head trust me I just went there because I know I could chill there till like 10 in the morning.

Its so funny what you said because I saw about five people smoken weed.. What a trip.. imagine if they stayed open later and fixed the place up?? I don't know that place could fucking be hot as hell But then again maybe its more fun the way it is.

Wow xbebekiss, that *is* long ago. I remember those days. I didn't go there nearly as much as I had the Newark one but I do remember being 13-14 years old and sneaking in to Studio 1. Now *that* was fun and mayheim in one!!

Back to notallthere, the place did have a better crowd in the past. I can't really explain it but it's changed. It truely has and I think a lot has to do with the fact Joe now co-owns with some people. He did try making the place a little better though. I'll give him that much. I personally am not fond of the black light responsive carpeting - - particurly the one in the Rock Room that reminds me of bowling pins. But, he did take some walls down to make the dance floor much more accessible from the main hallway in the Club Room, dance room, whatever it's titled.

The drinks that I've had were always great. They usually have some of the best contests and what have. The sad thing about Jersey is, or maybe it's soleyl Newark, is that clubs can not serve alcohol after 3AM. Thats Joe's main reason for not doing it. And if he did stay open later, I think it can only to be till 4 with no alcohol and I imagine it's not worth it to him. Sure, it would actually help clear the place out more over that hour for when it does close, but he don't care about that. The bouncers have always done a great job escorting people out at closing.

Gee, I'm really starting to miss Joe's. I, for one, carry many memories from there both incredible and bad. Now that the "fun partiers" that I use to hang with there are gone, it's lost it's fun for me. I'd rather keep those good memories then watch them all fade to one bad end. Buuuut, I guess it couldn't hurt to go there once again before it closes in May. :)

Since I am originally a Harrison boy I have been to both the old and new Tequilla Joes. Joe is actually family of mine. At one time he was probably the most creative night club owner around. Think about it. He came back from Cancun 12 years ago and came back with the idea of having the super soaker with the tequilla popper shots that got everyone totally fucked up. Next he decides to do his advertising on every billboard in NJ (at least it seemed it). Shit I even saw an advertisement for his place before a movie at the Loews. He advertised his place in Kearny like it held 800 people in it (the place didnt hold 200). Then he found some guy to buy it for major loot when he knew his run was over. Then he buys this huge run down rock club does a little renovation and makes it into a nightclub giant. He opens the place with the spinning barber chair that u do a shot and they spin u around (another way of getting totally fucked up). That place is there for one reason and that is for you to totally go crazy and get wasted. Then let me inform you of the smartest thing he has ever done. Read the billboards they all say on the border of Belleville. Wonder why??? the place is actually in newark. would you go to a club if u knew it was in the worst area of Newark. probably not.

Though I dont have a chance to stop by there anymore I have a lot of friends that work there that say the place is still doing well. It is a great place for a person to go and get messed up and go crazy.

Nice to see someone who works for joeys supporting another club.. I agree the marketing was very good I used to live in cranford and I saw billboards everywhere. and they always where effective and to the point.

Hey serg what the chance of joeys ever expanding or moving into the restaurant side on packed nights?

As you found out from your post from the Sunday of Martin Luther King, I am as honest as it gets when it comes to the business. I know what it takes to be successful and that is from paying attention to what goes on around me. There are so many times that I want to get on the board and tell the people what is really going on but I eat my words. I go on this board just to watch people hype up their party like 10x more then it really is. Whatever!!! Theres a secret to this business and that is staying on top of the trend. Why do you think the Abyss has been around for so long??? They have a great team that stays on top of what is hot and what is not. Then they have a guy like Dave who has the mind set that no one is not attainable. When I was at the abyss he even got the owners a price for madonna to play there. unrealistic price but he knew who to call. Alot of credit also needs to go to Bond for bringing the whole international DJ flavor to Jersey. He is taking a very risky chance but he deserves a big thumbs up for that move. I dont want to continue on forever becuase I can but here is a case of someone who appreciates what goes on in this business and not afraid to admit it. Joeys is not the best club in NJ to everyone but as long as we have customers like you who rant and rave on how great the place is we know something is being done right.

About next door, I must mention it to Joey every couple of weeks. Our Thursdays, Fridays and Sunday could really need the extra space on some weeks. You got to look at the downfalls which outweight the upswing. Joeys is the perfect size place to be open four to five days a week. As I mentioned earlier once and a while it would be beneficial. If you ever have been to Hunka Bunka you see what I mean. If they dont curtain off some areas and do 800 people they look like a ghost town if we do 800 people we are pretty packed. That restaurant brings in great rental income and that is what makes it so right to be next door to us. So about next door I really think it probably will never happen. Sorry dude.

Nice reply! I didn't get to see this yesterday.

I work at Pearson ed in upper saddle river and we had a bomb scare yesterday so we had to throw down are shit and litterly run out.

But anyway, its funny as big as the club business is I believe that very few people are brought in from web promotion because most "club types" are not going to search on the web for night club information or chat about what clubs they are going to go this week. It really is to bad because web sites are better then flyers for the latest info. The staff at Joeys seems committed to make sure that when people have a bad time next time they won't. That makes me feel happy to go there beucase it makes me feel well.. kinda important ha. I got allot of shit on this board when I said "Joeys is the best club in NJ" But thats what i feel. Its a matter of opnion what the best club is and i always have a good time at joeys The music is good, the crowd is great, the lights are awesome and the staff is great. I have never ever thought the staff of any club is great. Do you do anything at the surf club? I have been going to the surf club/ ortley beach since i was to young to walk. litterly!

But anyway keep it up man im going to pound some drinks tommrow! its been a shitty week

Sorry to hear about the school thing. fuck that. i work outside the GW and I was one scared puppy that day (9/11).

About the surf, yes I do work there. I do the same thing there that I do here. Which is plan the promotions and make sure the promoters are doing what they are supposed to do. It is a great part time gig. How can u beat managing a night club as a second job???
