Ultraworlds Statement

What's up with the event cancellations

Due to the overwhelming numbers of emails regarding Ultraworld's upcoming events, we wrote an information page that gives you the lowdown on what's going on. It is in response to questions of varying natures.

As many of you have noticed, Ultraworld has now had two events not happen as planned.

One was Rocket on New Years Eve at the DC Amory, and the other was Odyssey 20:02 planned for April 27th, also at the DC Armory.

The main story in these two is we are experiencing some problems with the Armory. Nothing we shouldn't overcome, but a current issue nonetheless. After Fox 5 ran a story from Radiate (need we even say what it was about), the General of the Army who runs the armory wanted to gather more information about the events we have been doing for the past 6 years. They were actually going to let us do New Years Eve as contracted, but in the end, we pulled the event, feeling that it was best to let the General do his work on his own time, without forcing an event just four weeks later. We were given a clear signal that everything was resolved and that we could move forward with Odyssey on April 27th. Unfortunately, the armory management dragged its feet in having the appropriate meetings to clear the event, which forced us to cancel.

Yet that was not the main reason for the April cancellation. We could have issued them deadlines, but we did not.

The real reason that Odyssey is not going to happen is due to the lack of our ability to find a suitable headliner for such a large space. We are running into the same problems we always run into. Believe it or not, after being the most reliable one-off event producer in this scene for 10 years, after throwing the party of the year (Starscape), and being voted 2nd best promoter in the country, we cannot get a major headliner of trance or techno to spin for Ultraworld. You ask yourself why people like Carl Cox, Sasha & Digweed, Oakenfold, Fatboy Slim, etc... have never spun for us, and you would think the answer must be that Ultraworld hasn't asked them. That is not the case, we've invited every one of those dj's and more to every single Ultraworld event since 1996. But the sad truth is they say "no", everytime, time and time again. Perhaps we've just been completely unlucky and they are all already booked on the date we pick. But after 6 years, that answer if wearing thin. Considering our two events are annually on the same date, any one of these artist's agents could arrange a tour with an Ultraworld event as an anchor. Unfortunately, they apparently will not. Just be aware it is not for our lack of trying. It's been a frustrating 6 years. We had one glimpse of breaking into the bigger names with PVD last year, but other than that, we've been shut out time and time again. One agency even dared to tell us they would not give us a certain dynamic duo because we needed to book their "lessor" names first to build a reputation! We try to be humble, but please, here in 2002 someone's going to tell Ultraworld it needs to prove itself?!? Considering what we've done, and the level of quality that our events are known for, you'd think these agencies would be knocking down our door to finally get these artists in front of 10,000 people. But they are not. Your guess is as good as ours as to why, because it certainly isn't for lack of trying, or for us being willing to meet their financial demands.

So boys and girls... the bottom line is, it ain't easy! And now you have the answer to the often asked question: "You are the mighty Ultraworld, this is the biggest lineup you can put together?" It's a question we're a bit sick of hearing, because of the answer which we've outlined. We're not sick of doing parties by any means, but we just want to express to the public what is going on behind the scenes. The challenge is in our hands to continue to produce events without the $50k dj, but you as a patron need to do your part as well and realize that Ultraworld events are special due to the amount of energy and creativity we put into them. They are made even more special by the people that attend. The music and the DJ's are paramount to the event, but aside from a dj here or there who did not have a great set, Ultraworld books quality dj's free of scene politics. So if you don't recognize every name on the flier, think of that as an opportunity to experience something different, not something bad. We feel the event stands alone as something to get excited about. A perfect example is Burning Man. People pay hundreds of dollars and spend thousands just to be a part of that environment. Even people providing artistic work for that event pay to be there. We obviously do not operate the same way they do, but the analogy can be made.

We should also note that apart from a party here or there in New York, Ultraworld is one of the few big promoters left on the East Coast. Other than that (and mostly true in New York as well), the DJ experience is limited to clubs, however big or small. We've always said that the clubs are the bread and butter of the scene, but Ultraworld is the hot fudge Sunday! If the 'big dj's' don't want to be a part of that, we're not gonna let it spoil our fun.

Just think about these things when you see our fliers come.

As for the brief mention of a drum n bass party in DC on April 27th, that will not happen either.

Lonnie will be doing drum n bass parties under the name LFU (Lonnie from Ultraworld),

but for now, all of the Ultraworld attention is being turned to Starscape.

Thanks for reading

they would still need other dj;s for the other areas, but point taken...fuck it, do all local dj's in the main area as a warm up for SH and then have SH go at it
