  1. Ability, originality and accomplishment. In Michael Woods‘ short career he has managed to touch on every cornerstone, leaving proof of his musical competence at producing big room, progressive and tech-house tracks, along with a discernible motivation to better the quality of music being distributed. This has not gone unnoticed with DJs like Pete Tong consistently throwing props his way. Alongside an impressive catalogue of tracks on numerous labels including Mau5trap, and Toolroom Records, many established artists such as Underworld, Martin Sloveig and Moguai have hired Michael Woods to renovate their sound into a style which emulates his musical vision, including the Deadmau5 & Chris Lake’s “I Saidâ€, which became the only remixed track featured on the 2010 album, “4×4=12â€. In addition, mainstream artists such as Kylie, Estelle, The Ting Tings, The Temper Trap, P Diddy and Ginuwine ft Timbaland & Missy Elliot have all borrowed his insatiable remixing skills, leaving his studio rarely empty. His ability to rework music with an exceptionally sharp ear for quality production has left him in high regard with many artists and labels across the industry, leading to a nomination for ‘Best Remixer’ at the 2011 IDMA’s (International Dance Music Awards). Michael Woods now borrows some of this growing respect offering it to his label, Diffused Music, which houses applauded tracks from him self and others. The rapidly growing label is another imperative ingredient in furthering the exhilarating Michael Woods history book.

  4. Saturday, May 10TH, 2014 Mighty Real Presents "The Godfather - Part 1" A tribute to Frankie Knuckles (Defmix) HECTOR Romero (Def Mix / NYC) w/ Mighty Real Resident David Harness (Harlum Muziq) As many of you probably know by now, Frankie Knuckles passed from us on Monday, March 31st, 2014. While he was booked on Saturday, May 10th to play Mighty Real, we have decided to pay homage to this musical giant by dedicating this night to his memory. We'll have special visuals, a shrine where people can write and dedicate their thoughts and prayers, and Hector Romero (Def Mix/NYC) with David Harness will be laying down the tunes "Knuckles style" all night long. A portion of the proceeds will be going to a diabetes charity TBD. The man many call the godfather of house, Frankie Knuckles began DJing in New York in the early '70s while still a teenager, years before the disco boom which proved to be the first flowering of modern dance music. Ten years later he was in Chicago, putting together megamixes of old disco hits with new drum-machine percussion for an appreciative audience at crucial clubs like the Music Box and the Warehouse. Another decade on from those first formative steps for house music, Knuckles was back in his New York home, working as a producer and remixer for the biggest pop stars in the business. His career spans more time than any dance producer and without him, the landscape would be immeasurably different.

  8. Imagine the love child of the Misfits and Daft Punk; the act of conception would be grisly, but what a mighty offspring their union would generate. A formidable figure a la Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo, the polymath and producer behind the Bloody Beetroots. While Bloody Beetroots burst on to the scene in 2007, Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo did not spring forth from the godhead fully formed. Born in Bassano del Grappa, Italy, in 1977, our hero started young, studying classical guitar and learning to sight read via the traditional solfge method (you know â€" like "Do Re Mi" in The Sound of Music). But his imagination was fired by other sources: The raw energy of punk and rockabilly music; the vibrant images and outrageous storylines of comics by Max Bunker, Benito Jacovitti, and especially Tanino Liberatore, creator of the cyberpunk RanXerox. "The secret is tying up thoughts and visions via the process called music," says Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo of his distinct aesthetic. "I'm a grown child who enjoys reading comic books of the 1970s, who never stops dreaming, and listening to punk and classical music. I'm disciplined and undisciplined at the same time." These contradictions allow him to change at a moment's notice, and eschew established patterns. "Unlike many of my colleagues, I hate to read biographies of those who did music and arts," he adds. "I prefer to watch, understand, and analyze the world by myself. My taste has to be influenced by something that is not art. I love to be struck by life." Nevertheless, as a youth Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo served his time in the culture trenches. After years of studying Chopin, Beethoven, and Debussy, he cast off the straightjacket of classical music-while still retaining its hard-earned lessons-and turned his attention to reconciling the new world of samplers and electronic music with his affinity for punk and '80s new wave. Pushing himself as a budding producer, performer and multi-instrumentalist, he embarked on a decade of variegated projects that Rifo now affectionately refers to as "exercises." Starting with his 1997 debut, a production for Northern Italian hip-hop stars Da Fam, he tore through genres like a child shredding gift wrap on Christmas morning: Film soundtracks, house, drum and bass, trip-hop, and more. As the climax of this dizzying string of well-received collaborations, he initiated his first genuine solo project, an electro-punk band with revolutionary visual style: Bob Rifo's Gang. At the instigation of his colleague Tommy Tea-his on-stage partner and longtime minister of propaganda- Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo then created Bloody Beetroots, an artistic alter-ego that would draw on all Rifo's experiences to date. Initially conceived as an all-inclusive way to package the live thrills of Bob Rifo's Gang with the excitement of dancing-till-dawn DJ after-party, the producer set to quickly establishing the Bloody Beetroots as a electronic musical entity in its own right. First up were "French Touch" icons Alex Gopher and Etienne de Crecy, who let Bloody Beetroots put their edgy, acid stamp on the respective tracks "The Game" and "Funk." With other French artists like Rin™Žrâ„¢se lining up for his services, within a single year Rifo cranked out 28 Bloody Beetroots remixes. But not to mark territory, so much as to respond to fellow artists from around the world, and poise Bloody Beetroots as a truly international sound. Sir Bob Cornelius Rifo is determined that this goal will remain central as the Bloody Beetroots star ascends, and their fame travels the globe. "I want to sit at the table with a Chinese person one day, and the next with an African, and the day after with a Vietnamese, and absorb their different cultures, to learn and to inspire myself and my music." In 2007, two pivotal releases pushed Bloody Beetroots to the next level. First, a vigorous overhaul of "Maniac," the percolating 1983 electro-pop smash from the soundtrack of Flashdance, an homage so inspired it won accolades from original composer Michael Sembello. Next up was "Discommunication," a futuristic disco redux of Timbaland's "Miscommunication." As original music and remixes by Bloody Beetroots began to bubble up in pop culture, via placement in episodes of CSI: Miami and prominent use in videogames, peers like Justice, Mstrkrft, Adam Freeland, and Martin Solveig were singing their praises in the press. Dim Mak founder Steve Aoki was an early, and passionate, convert: " The Bloody Beetroots is my favorite project right now. Bob’s remixes are some of my biggest bangers in my sets." He lost no time in snapping up Bloody Beetroots to release their Us debut, the Rombo Ep (with a full-length slated to follow soon). "The Ep summarizes much of my world," says Rifo. "You hear classical music, electronica, pop, fidget, punk. And the album will be even more comprehensive, because I want to incorporate new elementsÉ all my musical components. I need that." Like so many things in the universe of Bloody Beetroots, the creative impetus behind Rombo came from idiosyncratic sources. "My inspiration comes from events affecting my day-to-day life, and my creative process takes place outside the studio," emphasizes Rifo. "For example, when while I was creating Rombo, I was also studying the Italian Futurists." To translate the innovations of composer and theorist Luigi Russolo (author of the 1913 treatise The Art of Noises), one of the earliest pioneers of electronic music, into a 21st century context, he recruited an outside observer: Fool's Gold recording artist Congorock. "I chose him because he is synonymous with bass. And while he opened the oscillators, I closed my eyes and tried to find that special sound. Once I had it, I opened them and mixed madly. Rombo was ready in an hour. This is what happens-I follow the moment." History has shown that the most provocative moments in art-the 1913 premiere of Stravinsky's Le Sacre du primtemps, the notorious 1981 show by Public Image Ltd. at the Ritz in NYC-can provoke civil unrest. The Bloody Beetroots inspire that same brand of revolutionary fervor, yet with exuberance, not outrage. There's a riot goin' on, and you're all invited. By " Kurt B. Reighley " ~axs
  9. La Roux is an English electropop "synth duo" band made up of singer and synth player Elly Jackson and co-writer and co-producer Ben Langmaid from London, England, United Kingdom. Their music is largely influenced by 1980s pop music including Eurythmics, Depeche Mode, The Human League, Heaven 17, Yazoo and Prince. The name "La Roux" is reported to be chosen like this: Jackson found a book of baby names in a bin and in the book was the name "La Roux". 'La Roux' comes from the French for 'red-haired one' referring to Jackson's distinctive hairstyle. Their first single Quicksand was released by the Kitsune Music record label in November, 2008. Polydor released La Roux's debut album on 29 June 2009. Polydor released La Roux's second single In For The Kill on 16 March 2009 and prominent dubstep producer Skream has made two remixes of the track. In For The Kill debuted at number 11 on the UK Singles Chart on 22 March 2009 and has so far peaked at number 2 (as of 19 April 2009). La Roux gained fifth position on the BBC's Sound of 2009 poll. The Guardian website featured La Roux on their new band of the day column. The Guardian also featured La Roux as one of the "Best New Acts of 2009" in the January of that year. The album has been nominated for a Mercury Prize. La Roux plans to wait until they finish touring, which will be well into 2010 before doing major work a second album. They do not want to rush things and do not plan on bringing in a big name producer. ~AXS

  12. Secret identities, aeronautical puns and releasing music at a snail’s pace; this is what we know of Flight Facilities so far. Releasing only 4 original tracks to date, ‘Crave you’, ‘Foreign Language’ ‘With You,’ and most recently ‘Clair De Lune’ the similarity drawn from all Flight Facilities tracks is that each features a very talented guest: Giselle Roselli, Jessica Higgs, Rob Smoughton aka Grovesnor and Christine Hoberg. While Flight Facilities don’t like to be pigeonholed by genre, they are vocal about their influences. They have drawn inspiration from acts, past and present, such as ELO, Jamiroquai, Daft Punk, Chic, Mylo and more.Their YouTube page already has over 15 million views,. The first video is the New York-shot ‘Crave You’ directed by Moopjaw (Golden Filter, Neon Indian, Peaches), featuring the styling of Christian Joy (Yeah Yeah Yeah’s / Karen O’s costume designer). Flight Facilities’ second single brings fans to a Hawaii 5-0-esque throwback by French director, Dimitri Basil, shot amongst some of Sydney’s most iconic landmarks and venues. The animation for “With You†combines Astroboy, Megaman and Daft Punk-inspired anime from young animator Benjamin Drake (also known for his animated work with Gotye), and most recently, Flight Facilities worked with Foals main videographer Dave Ma to shoot the almost-8-minute short film for ‘Clair De Lune’ in San Fernando Valley, California.Production wise, Flight Facilities are slowly building a reputation for delivery on every remix. With a selective approach to their remixes, they have tastefully retouched the likes of Holy Ghost!, Cut Copy, The C90s, Miike Snow, Bag Raiders, The Lowbrows, Sneaky Sound System and Toecutter. Most recently they tackled 4 decades of music and historical moments through four one hour mixtapes. Chronologically placing everything in order of release and time of event.. Mixmag called it ’one of the most ambitious mix series of all time.â€The journey is only just beginning; sit back, relax and enjoy what is coming your way.

  15. Rock N Roll Jesus is Kid Rock's most honest, eclectic, and soulful record to date. It's his State of the Union address, a deeply personal statement that looks at racism in America, empathizes with soldiers in Iraq (Rock visited the troops last Christmas) and also lays bare his tormented relationship with Pam Anderson. During their breakup, Rock assumed a low profile, focusing on his music for the first time in years. Initially, he teamed up with producer Rick Rubin, who gave him a much-needed jolt of confidence. "I told him, 'there are no classic American rockers right now, none,'" says Rubin. "'You can fill that gap. There's no competition, just get in there and do it.'" Rubin also encouraged Rock to step up his lyrics. "I said, 'Don't say your name in every song. You already covered all that "I'm Kid Rock, let's get drunk".'" Rock immediately wrote what he considers his best song ever, "Amen," in which he points his middle finger at "scumbag lawyers and wolves-in-sheep's-clothing pastors." With the release of Rock N Roll Jesus, Rock is calm and confident, considering what's at stake. Jesus is "a 'make it to the next level' record," he says. "That or go play county fairs for the next ten years." He believes this is his comeback. "It's the best record I've ever made, and it's going to move mountains. I feel more comfortable in my skin than I've ever felt. I know I'm a great performer. I've done that my whole life, but now I've come into my own as a songwriter and musician." Kid Rock released the album Rebel Soul on November 19, 2012, with "Let's Ride" as its lead single. This was his first mainstream album available for download from iTunes. A music video for the explicit "Cucci Galore" was released to You Tube. "Let's Ride" music video was released to AOL.com a week later. Kid Rock and TBT have also, already filmed two other music videos for the album, which are "Happy New Year", and "Redneck Paradise", a song he co-wrote with Eric & Jason Young of the southern rock group, The Young Brothers, for which his most recent "Chill'n The Most Cruise" destinations both 3 & 4 have been nick-named. He performed at several Mitt Romney rallies leading up to the Presidental Election. Nascar heavily promoted the album during the Race For The Chase, which ended in a live performance of "Let's Ride". He also performed "Chickens In The Pen " and " All Summer Long" on Good Morning America. He performed "Detroit,Michigan" at the 2012 Detroit Lions Halftime Show and George Clinton made a cameo appearance. He paid the high school that was working with him for the halftime show $2,500 dollars to pay for their expensives getting to and from Ford Field. The album debut at No 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 selling 146,933 copies. He will be performing "Let's Ride" on WWE's upcoming Tribute to The Troops special on NBC. ~AXS

When you’re in the business as long as he is (20 years and counting), you understandably develop niches and certain trademark sounds that you’re known for. Fair enough. But name one DJ that’s survived and thrived for that long resting on the same sound over and over. Victor Calderone has long earned his bona fides among deejays as a sonic innovator in house, techno and tribal music. His sets draw thousands of people. His mixes listened to all over the world. For Calderone, it boils down to one word that acts as both his brand, mantra and raison d’etre: Evolve. As a 15-year-old in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, Calderone quickly became obsessed with his older brother’s DJ equipment, spending virtually every day on his turntables and every dollar on records. A frequent patron at classic nightspots Funhouse and Paradise Garage, Calderone’s Program Two was signed by Sire Records in 1991 and released one album before an self-imposed extended hiatus from music. In 1996, he returned to the music scene and quickly became one of dance music’s top producers and live deejays, releasing a steady string of original productions and remixes. But now it’s time for the next chapter. “I feel like I’ve been through a few reincarnations,†he says laughing, from his home studio in Brooklyn. “Some people only know me for my past work with pop artists or productions I did years ago. I'm still proud of that, but I've always tried, both in the studio and deejaying live, to keep moving forward. I've had a lot of people come up to me after they hear me spin now and go, ‘Wow. I did not expect that.’†What they “didn’t expect†is Calderone’s deft chameleonic ability to weave in, around and between myriad genres while always keeping the crowd energetic and anticipatory for the next record. As Calderone puts it: “I went from playing these remixes I was doing for Sting and Madonna to playing hard tribal to the more minimal and techno stuff. Techno goes deep in my roots, but I still love house and tribal and being versatile is what makes a unique deejay.†It’s this melding of styles that can be found on Manipulating Waveforms, Calderone’s hour-long podcasts available for free on VictorCalderone.com. Sure, we all know it’s a fool’s errand to try and capture the deejay’s constantly shifting, marathon sets in 60 or so minutes, but each volume does encapsulate the varied sounds Calderone has been spinning for years, moving more like a live set than the traditional compilation album. “I try not to spend too much time on it, but there is an organic feeling to these mixes that has a flow and isn’t so exact and mechanical,†says the deejay. “I try to have those peaks and valleys so it has a little bit of a story to it and more of a club feel.†After a long string of successful albums and singles, Calderone established his Evolve brand in 2005 as a way to coalesce his numerous residencies around the world, including Montreal, Tel Aviv, Bulgaria, and a monthly residency at New York’s Pacha. With the Evolve brand now taking off globally, clubgoers have quickly begun to equate the word with joy-inducing, risk-taking sets that shatter musical boundaries and the conventions of what a DJ set “should†be.

  22. Here we go, let’s take the Caravan for another tour. Same Palace, with a brand new customized flavor. On the shelves and on the road. The surprise breakout band of the last decade, the apostles of Electro Swing and precursors of a laidback yet terribly upbeat trend, is coming up with an evocative second album: Panic! This time, Caravan Palace takes us even farther than their first album (that sold more than 150 000 copies) and continues an amazing adventure almost started by accident. Their strength lies in their common passion for electronic music. Charles, Arnaud and Hughes, the initial trio, dig swing, especially gypsy jazz, and try their hands at the genre’s traditional instruments: guitar, double bass and violin. That’s where this peculiar mixture of classical Django and new trendy electro comes from. And it’s far better than those retro futuristic sounds… because it swings. A few myspace posts later and they have almost doubled in size, enrolling Chapi and the boisterous Colotis in the band. They start touring long before they even think about releasing an album. And everything clicks in 2007, during the Django Reinhardt Festival in Samois. Terrified to be part of the gypsy jazz pantheon, they gather speed and steam and create a real posse (not unlike hip-hop) that follows them everywhere. The word is out, their breakout song, Jolie Coquine, is playing everywhere. The record is released a year later, and it’s an immediate hit. They soon tour France and Europe. The show peaks at the Olympia. The room is packed, people go crazy… listening to swing. This has never happened before. But during the autumn of 2010, they stop and take a month off to start thinking about the new album. How do they come up with new songs? Every member of the band works in his own musical lab before exchanging files at night. The same process starts over the next day. And when the others react instinctively, it’s generally a good sign. The basic rhythm of the first album has mutated into sophisticated beats, less gimmicky, more varied and enriched with sounds flirting with the frontiers of trip-hop. They still love Massive Attack, they still dig the creative minds of Ninja Tune, Isolée’s minimal electro vibe or Gorillaz’s grand hip-hop rock bazaar. Only the best of the best. But they also rediscover thirties and forties swing jazz, artists like Fletcher Henderson, or the less mainstream musicians like Charlie Chavers and Mildred Bailey. Six months later, forty-something titles pile up. It’s time to regroup in the studio… where fifteen vintage keyboards are waiting. Tirelessly, the band tries new things, merges styles and makes creative decisions. Fourteen titles are soon emerging. The petulant voice of Colotis is booming again and the old friend Cyrille-Aimée is back on two songs. And don’t forget to include Toustou in the Caravan. And now, here comes the list! Clash * It opens up on a… fun and raging note! A surprising mix of up tempo swing with a bunch of hacked-up sounds, technologic and flirting with rock’s golden past, back in the day when it was called bop (let’s forget all those labels!). From the get go, this sounds like a huge leap forward from Caravan Palace’s first generation. June 12 th 3049 * A ballad with a deliciously slow yet vivid tempo, samples from the grand old age, the vibraphone and the spiraling springs stretching out time. Given the title, we know we’re entering a new futuristic territory. Beatphone * A frantic beat that takes its time, an amazing clash with a cascade of breaks to catch one’s breath, barely… before the beat starts again. Cotton heads * A pop escapade showing the breadth of Caravan Palace’s new horizons. An ethereal tune, flirting with weightlessness, and branded with a twist of swing, rooted in the tempo and the impulsive keyboards. Dirty side * Yes, dirty, the dark side of the Caravan, frantic and frenzied, chemical, destroy… Listen to this borderline sardonic voice coupled with the mocking piano. And the Lionel Hampton vibe from the vibraphone. Enough to upset any musical compass! Dramophone * Dear God, the Andrew Sisters are back. With synthetic glitter. This one is coming from Cyril-Aimée Daudel, a talent temporarily attached to the Caravan. This is clearly the song that bridges best the two albums. Glory of nelly * A London promenade, another sweet escape from the Caravan, with a special song… eh, I beg your pardon… toast, from Sista Colotis. The unlikely and fleeting mix of swing and ragga, with a dominant background of brass and strings. Maniac * A hint of Gorillaz, a drawling voice, a few touches of seventies synthesizer (à la François de Roubaix), a pinch of Django guitar, almost included by accident. Mix up and listen… Newbop * Both new and bop. An acrobatic scat with a solid anchor, multiple breaks, like sturdy inviting steps. And don’t forget the boisterous guitar. Panic! * ~AXS

  24. This duo of genre-bender pride has made a name for itself on the Bay Area scene by successfully mixing spiritualism and hip-hop. Oakland's MC Zumbi and DJ/producer Amp Live blend hip-hop and trip-hop beats with lyrics focused on a message of unity, hope, and spiritual awareness. After a couple of indie hits, the duo slowly made inroads while opening for rap royalty like De La Soul, Rakim, and Run-D.M.C. Their debut album, Mind Over Matter, was released in May of 2000 and features collaborations with fellow Bay Area rappers Rasco, Planet Asia, and the Grouch. Although Zion I operates out of Berkeley, the group was originally formed in Atlanta, making their music difficult to classify as strictly West Coast hip-hop. Their musical style makes them even harder to define. With a style that borrows from hip-hop, trance, drum'n'bass, and reggae, Zion I's style is equally mystical and mystifying.
