  9. ESL History www.eighteenthstreetlounge.com With a wide ranging soundtrack including Italian Bossa beats, Middle Eastern melodies and Indian rhythms the Eighteenth Street Lounge quickly became a gathering place for musicians and the international crowd that call Washington DC their home. So it's not surprising that part-owner Eric Hilton and Rob Garza met a the Lounge in 1996. The two formed the duo Thievery Corporation and created the Eighteenth Street Lounge Music label. Prior to opening the Lounge, Hilton along with fellow deejay, Farid Ali had been producing parties and various music events in Washington DC. In 1995, along with their friend and two-bit hustler, Abdoul Jewayni, they opened the Lounge. Occupying the top three floors of a turn-of-the-century mansion, located just below Dupont Circle, the Lounge is a fantastic space. All three fireplaces are still used in the winter and the deck is in full swing every summer. While the music label has grown into it's own building nearby, the Lounge still remains true to its roots as a space owned by the deejays and solely dedicated to the eclectic music that ESL has become known for. Through the years the Lounge has never advertised or even put a sign on its door. Its success is due completely to word-of-mouth. It's possible to walk in one evening and find Thievery Corporation, Boozoo Bajou, or maybe even Federico Aubele at the decks. No nights are hyped at the Lounge and you never know who you might see.

  11. Joseph “Joey†Carvello CEO - Upstream Music Group, Inc. http://www.myspace.com/upstreammusicgroup Joseph “Joey†Carvello is a seasoned music executive that knows that the more things change; the more they remain the same. In a digital era filled with mp3s, YouTube and 360 deals, he is out to prove that a little old-school record industry know-how mixed with an acute understanding of the ever-changing marketplace will take his recently launched Upstream Music Group a long way. Carvello has dedicated the last 30+ years of his life to the business of music. From his roots as a pioneering disco jock (he was named Billboard magazine’s Disco DJ of the Year in 1978) to his groundbreaking success as the industry’s original Crossover Radio promoter leading up to his monumental and record breaking accomplishments as TVT Records’ Senior Vice President of Promotion, the East Cambridge, MA native has proven to be an industry maverick whose instinct are rarely wrong. In 1989, music impresario Doug Morris convinced Carvello to bring his talents in-house at Atlantic Records as their Director of Dance Music. During his four-year tenure, he didn’t disappoint. He scored over 20 No. 1 songs, signed hit-making acts like Robin S and Marc Anthony, and led the acquisition of Big Beat Records—then led by current Atlantic Records co-chairman and COO Craig Kallman. Carvello proved that he knew more than just dance music a few years later when he was hired as National Director of Crossover Promotion and quickly rose to Vice President of Top 40 Promotions at Priority Records—the then label home of A-list hip-hop acts like Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube and Master P. “ It was relatively easy to make the transition to promoting hip hop—it was still rhythm music,†Carvello explains. “My passion is soul, funk and dance music.†It was Carvello’s time at Priority that served as a primer for his greatest success to date—TVT Records. When he joined the label in 2002, it was an indie label known for its rock acts and soundtracks. In less than five years there, Carvello and his small staff harvested 2.5 million radio spins, charted five No. 1 songs and sold over 12 million albums. He made artists like Lil Jon, the Ying Yang Twins and Pitbull household names. TVT Records was named Billboard magazine’s No. 1 Independent Record Label (Airplay and Sales) for five years in a row. “We changed the promotion business,†he says proudly. “ We were game changers—we were the subject of discussion on major label conference calls, everybody was trying to figure out our methodology, strategy and approach to promoting our songs and artists.†He parted ways with TVT in 2006. Now, after years and years of working with labels, Carvello decided it was time for him to take all of his experience and expertise and start his own. Upstream Music Group was born. Upstream Music Group, LLC is distributed by ASYLUM, LLC. He believes the key to Upstream’s success will be to remain “lean and mean.†“We’re a four-man operation; a basic mom & pop shop focused on making great music, developing artists, building new associations while maintaining our deep well of relationship which have been built on credibility, confidence and passion—all while maintaining a low overhead.†The label will also be multi-faceted, offering 360 deals to its acts and serving as a promotion, marketing, publicity and publishing company for management, recording artists and other labels. ------------------------------------------------ John McMann Sr. VP - Atlantic Records http://www.atlanticrecords.com A native of Boston, Massachusetts, John has been deeply rooted in the music industry for over 20 years. Along the way, John was a Programmer, Personality, and a Mixer at several major-market radio stations: WIOQ Philly, WKXS Boston, WHYI Miami, WWKX Providence, WKSS Hartford One of his first radio gigs in the mid-1980s was an overnight slot at KISS 95.7fm in Hartford, CT. During that tenure (and while still living on Boston MA) John would hop a Greyhound Bus every day, and make the 200 mile roundtrip from Beantown to Connecticut. At the time, the bus fare exceeded his salary at the station; that fact alone captures John’s drive, determination, passion and dedication – all keys to his success through the years. As his career began to flourish, John was promoted to more coveted on-air slots at KISS: first late nights, then afternoons, and eventually the afternoon rush-hour spot. His career as a broadcaster reached a pinnacle when he was wooed to Q102 in Philadelphia to head up the morning segment. Eventually, John vaulted himself to management as a Music Director at the #1 radio station in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1994, John left radio and opted to join Jive Records. In six years, and upon departing Jive as Senior Director Crossover Promotion, John promoted and A&R'd remixes for Britney Spears, R Kelly, Backstreet Boys, Nsync, A Tribe Called Quest, KRS One to name a few. John joined Atlantic Records in 1994 as a Vice President, and since was promoted to his current role as Sr. VP Pop & Rhythmic promotion. Some of his current responsibilities are working with a long list of artists - from Kid Rock to TI, to Matchbox Twenty, Sean Paul, Missy Elliott, Staind and Flo Rida. In addition to his radio and record label career, John has DJd many of the hottest nightclubs across the country, and his remix discography includes studio work under the production duo of Armand Van Helden & John “Horse†McMann. ------------------------------------------------ Dave Russell Founder – FLIPSIDE http://www.clubflipside.com | http://www.myspace.com/daveruss66 Dave has been DJing and promoting events for over 20 years.
