ATLANTA, Georgia (AP) -- The state's school superintendent has proposed striking the word evolution from Georgia's science curriculum and replacing it with the phrase "biological changes over time." The change is included in more than 800 pages of draft revisions to Georgia's curriculum that have been posted by the Department of Education on its Web site. The middle and high school standards are expected to be voted on by the state Board of Education in May, after public feedback. Superintendent Kathy Cox said the concept of evolution would still be taught under the proposal, but the word would not be used. The proposal would not require schools to buy new textbooks omitting the word evolution and would not prevent teachers from using it. Cox repeatedly referred to evolution as a "buzzword" Thursday and said the ban was proposed, in part, to alleviate pressure on teachers in socially conservative areas where parents object to its teaching. "If teachers across this state, parents across this state say, 'This is not what we want,' then we'll change it," said Cox, a Republican elected in 2002. Educators and legislators criticized the proposal, saying science teachers understand the theories behind evolution and how to teach them. "Here we are, saying we have to improve standards and improve education, and we're just throwing a bone to the conservatives with total disregard to what scientists say," said state Rep. Bob Holmes, a Democrat. Social conservatives who prefer religious creation to be taught instead of evolution criticized the proposal as well. "If you're teaching the concept without the word, what's the point?" said Rep. Bobby Franklin, a Republican. "It's stupid. It's like teaching gravity without using the word gravity."

  9. NWA had it right.... @#$% the police! Stupid pigs! http://www.ny1.com/ny/TopStories/SubTopic/index.html?topicintid=1&subtopicintid=1&contentintid=36711 NYPD: Police Shooting Of Unarmed Teen Was Unjustified JANUARY 25TH, 2004 A deadly police shooting of an unarmed teenager in a Brooklyn housing complex early Saturday morning appears not to be justified, according to the NYPD’s preliminary investigation. The Brooklyn district attorney’s office is now looking into the circumstances of the shooting of 19-year-old Timothy Standsbury in a stairway door leading to the roof of a building on Lexington Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant. “At this point, based on the facts we have gathered, there appears to be no justification for this shooting,†Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. At about 1 a.m., according to police, two uniformed officers on foot patrol were looking for trespassers on the roof of the Louis Armstrong Houses when they confronted Standsbury at a stairway door. A relative tells NY1 he was at a party nearby and was using the roof as a shortcut to cross over to his apartment to pick up some CDs. “One officer held the door open while his partner looked inside,†Kelly said. “At that moment, it appears Mr. Standsbury was exiting the landing through the doorway, coming toward the officers. The officer peered into the doorway, firing one time, striking Mr. Standsbury in the chest.†The teen was pronounced dead at Woodhull Hospital. According to the NYPD, the officer's partner says no words were exchanged before the shot was fired. Angel Yulfo, a resident of the building, says he heard the whole incident clearly through an open window. “Never said, ‘Police,’ never said ‘Stop’ – nothing,†Yulfo said. “Don't ask no questions, don't even say ‘freeze,’ ‘hold it,’ ‘wait a minute’ or ‘stop?’†said the teen’s father, Timothy Standbury Sr. “He's just going to shoot the gun? That's not right.†The officer who fired the shot is an 11-year veteran of the NYPD's Housing Bureau. He has been placed on modified duty, and his weapons and shield have been taken away, pending the outcome of the investigation. At the D.A.’s request, NYPD investigators have not interviewed the officer, so the case is not jeopardized before a grand jury. “He doesn’t deserve to die like that,†said the grandmother, whom Standbury lived with. “And I want justice done, I want justice done. If he was a bad boy, I wouldn't be here. But I want justice done.†In a sad twist of fate, Standsbury's own mother works for the NYPD, as a school crossing guard. “I'm protecting other people's kids, and I wanted the same for mine,†said his mother, Phyllis Clayburne. “I want justice.†Standbury had a job at a nearby McDonald’s as he worked towards a degree, friends and family members said. “He just got his life on track, and all of a sudden something like this happens,†said local resident Deidre Bennett. “It's terrible.†As the police began their investigation, Eric Adams, the head of the group 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement, met with Standsbury's family. He said the shooting should prompt department-wide changes: “Terrorist protection is being used to terrorize communities of color, so it's more than just this shooting we're looking at,†Adams said. “If they believe just acknowledging this one shooting is going to be the end of this, that's not what what's going to take place here.†The shooting also had residents asking what the NYPD is prepared to do to ensure something like this doesn't happen again: “There needs to be a sit-down among some of the community-based organizations, and when I say sit down I mean things have to change, bottom line,†said local resident Jamella God. The 79th Precinct stationhouse is just around the corner from the Louis Armstrong Houses, but residents say there isn't a lot of trust between them and the police. “They always run into this block as soon as they hear anything; they just consider this a bad block anyway,†said Arnold Tuss, who lives at the complex. “I think they’re just too gun happy,†said another resident, Donna Ellison. “That's really what I think. Since they got guns, they don't know how to act.†The police commissioner promised to take action. “This is a tragic incident that compels us to take an in-depth look at our tactics and training, both for new and veteran officers,†Kelly said.
  10. um, shut up dude of course he cant prove it and i'm not even gonna waste my time responding to the other half of what you said but thats what he believes and i totally agree with him. they were there, they arent there now, and we were totally right in invading Iraq thats the bottom line now get over the fact that we did some good you little pussies and help in the continuing effort
  11. i think the democratic party is shooting itself in the foot its pretty sad. its not a good thing for anybody, because they are weakening the system by not being able to mount an opposition and keep the republicans in check. as a republican, i'm happy Bush is going to be re-elected, but somewhat worried about the radical approach that many democrats have adopted lately.
  12. i never noticed how much the Speaker of the House looks like Jabba the Hut it was a good speech, but i didnt particularly like all of the references to "my administration" and how much the tax-cuts helped, altohugh its obivous that that will score many brownie points with the common people in the upcoming election
  13. great candidates this democratic party has
  14. yeah, genius, we should just let idots with Kalashnikovs run around and drill liwuor store owners full of holes, listen to yourself its pathetic, you want to criticize our country so much you look for anytihng to take a stab at you disgust me
  15. the youngsters are wisening up
  16. ok, shit i like that i dont like i have muslim friends and that its ignorant comments like that that only serve to hurt Israel's cause. The struggle there fromt he Israeli point of view isnt motivated by race, but by a struggle to survive and maintain a way of life that the Jewish people have created for themselves there through hard work. The struggle from the other side, the Palestinian side, is one of race and hatred, as was clearly see from the first Jewish settlers who returned the land that their fathers lived on a thousand years ago. Jews never discriminated agianst anybody in the region until the Arabs of the area began discriminating against them. To make a racist comment like "he's gotta be Muslim" is in no way representative of Israeli beliefs or I would like to beleive of most Israeli supporters. So stop giving ammo to these terrorist-supporters damn it by making stupid ignorant racist comments.
  17. farakhan is definitely a dirt bag
  18. they are OK in the sense that WAR is WAR Israel should and will retaliate for those attacks but once you blatantly include civilians, well then Israel should be 10 times harder on those filthy bastards the movie swordfish sadly had the best solutions for dealing with terrorists and as for the King David hotel, you cant disrupt a way of life with a fake bomb, listen to yorself it was an attempt to sacre the Brits, if they wouldve been smart enough to listen, even though that was the MOST extreme part of the indenpendence movement in Israel they STILL didnt want to kill people, it was a sad sad accident, and DONT compare those extremists to Ben Gurion every people have its extremists but Palestinians? or Al Qaeda, all they want to do is kill people. that is there only goal. if they trtuly wanted just independnce they couldve had it a long time ago (even someone as stupid as you cant dispute that Arafatis a bumbling idiot for what the did at Oslo)
  19. all affirmative action is now is reverse racism
  20. dude, dont talk out of your ass; you look like the schmuck that you are the attack was by teh group Irgun, led by Menachem Begin Begin was the leader of Israel opposition party when Isreal was formed dickhead, so he was on the OPPOSITE party of Ben Gurion now that we see that you randomly spit shit out without actually knowing the history behind it of course it owuld be different if Hamas targeted military officials and warned of bombings beforehand that shows that ythey want to disrupt the way of life but not actually KILL people
  21. the terrorists, who were an extremist group not supported by the Jewish heads at the time (unlike Hamas which IS the Palestinian ruling body) actually called the hotel ahead of time and WARNED the people inside that there was a bomb. it wasnt meant to kill it was meant to show vulnerability and instill fear the Brits ignored the threat treating it as a hoax and dint tell the inhabitants of the hotel THATS WHTA REALLY HAPPENED so dont mix up the facts and besides that almost all the "terrorism" was targeted at British military officials, NOT CIVILIANS SO THERE IS NO WAY YOU CAN COMPARE THE PALESTINIANS TO WHAT THE JEWS DID BACK IN THE 40s
