some car stereos just don't play certain types of cds. i dont know the explanation, it just won't accept them. it has nothing to do with the way the cd is burnt, because i have cds that work perfectly in MY stereo & car, then won't work in a different car

no idea as far as quantity, but i just recently reformatted my HD, and burnt all the mp3s onto 800 mb cds. i needed 4 1/2, so i have about 3-4 gigs. NEVER delete music, you never know when you want to go back and listen to some old school, then wonder "why the hell did i ever like this song?" (zombienation)
