Serving it up the last Fridays of the month! Happy Birthday John! Bon Voyage Norm! MIXTURE: Feb 27, 2004 Cued Up and Heavy Industries present-- direct from Germany in their first L.A. appearance: Der Dritte Raum (Harthouse/Cocoon-Germany) performing live and guests TBA Coming into the mix under the encouragement and instruction of Daniel Bell and Claude Young, Magda began djing in 1996 working her way through the underground Detroit party circuit, via promoters, such as: Syst3m, and joining the all female DJ collective Women on Wax. It was a short while before she began appearing regularly at Detroit area events and clubs. [1999]: Magda's initial forays into techno, electro and house had evolved. Her DJ sets were becoming increasingly minimal and the records in her crate reflected a love of weird, challenging music. she soon earned a spot at the first inaugural DEMF. Invited by Richie Hawtin to open for him at his millennium celebration EPOK, Magda was entering a new phase in her career. In the time since, Magda has expanded her work with Hawtin, becoming his sole choice to open most of his Detroit and international events, including: jak:[2001, 2002] control: [2001, 2002] European tour: [2003] As well as earning an envious position on the line up of "From Our Minds to Yours" the Plus 8 ten year anniversary party. Through all her recent experiences, Magda's style has, once again, developed. increasing adept at moving any dance floor, her fusion of unconventional beat patterns, Detroit techno, German minimal, and experimental aesthetics, has pushed boundaries and won rave reviews during recent stints in the US and Europe, again opening for Hawtin, at the de9:closer to the edit tour as well as guest DJ appearances for highly respected labels such as Perlon, playhouse, and mute. [2002]: in June, Magda relocated to NYC and began a night called "Gel & Weave" bringing in acts such as Daniel Bell, Theo Parrish, Zip of Pantytec (live), Jeff Samuel, and John Tejada (live). The night was consistently featured in publications such as Time Out, The Village Voice, and Flyer Magazine. Soon after, Magda began collaborating with fellow NYC DJ/producer Dinky (Traum, Carpark). Magda vs. Dinky quickly became one of the most sought after duos in the New York electronic music scene. Their monthly parties were chosen several times as "critics pics" in the above mentioned publications and Magda was awarded "best new DJ imported to New York" in The Village Voice best of New York 2002. Most recently, Magda appeared in URB magazine's "Next 100". [2003]: in July Magda relocated to Berlin where she resides now after being taken on by Cocoon Booking. She is the only female on their roster. The next few months will see Magda going on the Plastikman tour alongside Richie Hawtin and making the jump from DJ to producer, releasing music on the Minus label. Through the blips, and bleeps of machine music, Magda has managed to find a certain humanity in circuitry, giving her sets with a certain soul, not readily found in the average techno DJ. this has earned her featured spots at many respected clubs, most notably: The End London, Sankey's Soap Manchester, Eros San Juan, Puerto Rico, Red No. Five & Big Wig Chicago, Motor (resident) Detroit, The Temple Detroit, Halcyon Brooklyn, Mettle Toronto, Guernica New York, and Foundation New York. Forthcoming releases, new tours, a growing role in minus, Detroit's next wave has hit. Magda live at Panacea 11/11/03 http://www.paxahau.com/sounds/2003/bnovember/11-11-03_magda_panacea.ram "Fuck Villalobos and Hawtin! Actually that's a bit harsh cos they were fucking amazing, however, Magda played the most amazing set at the Fabric afterparty: really seperated the men (or girl in this case) from the boys. I'd heard loads about her, but this was the first time I'd seen her play. Quality through and through, if anyone has links to mixes of hers I'd be interested in getting them." "Magda is brilliant. Loved the live sets I've listened to, and finally caught her about a month ago and she blew me away. A truely wicked dj." "magda is amazing! i had never heard of her till conference this past year where a certin dennis rodgers told me about her. since moving back to detroit i've seen her live like 5 or 6 times and she has been awsome every time! DEF. one of the best djs out there and one of the most under rated djs as well. her 4 cd set with richie at PS1 in NYC from july is one of my favotire sets of the year! DEF. in my top 5 or 10! her set from mutek this year is also wicked!" "Its great to have a club like Fabric at the forefront of our scene, that they will do things like that is a testament to their dedicated people! I felt priviledged to be in there for the after hours and the vibe was irie. As for Magda, I keep trying to remember certain tracks, but they hang around in my subconcious and dont quite form properly when I try and interperate them. I am hooked! i dont want to say too much, cos I may sound like a obsessed stalker - but she definitely hit the spot. Sunday morning is the first time in ages that a DJ has managed to awaken something in me - Its great to hear all those hours of tunes you have never heard, yet they all speak to you in familiar tones. good party. I am off to download one of her sets......" "Last night was awesome, best time I've had in a while. I miss Sammy Dee already, I had to ask him when was he coming back! Magda was the bleeping queen playing some really funky tracks. Overall a good night. Nice seeing tons of people I haven't seen in a while (including the hipster chicks). " "the queen of final scratch was real nice...lot of sub-bass abuse. her usual style of quirky tweaked out sounding tracks. was dissapointed when she got off early."
  8. this sounds pretty weird but i really dont know too many people in LA that started out in the rave scene in the early 90's and them moved to the club scene when it all pretty much died in 1998-1999. i used to throw raves, even massives, too and now only throw club events and i rarely come across any people from LA i can share the old *good ole days* stories with. i think for many clubs here in LA is that they have much of a rave type of atmosphere for adults 21+over, so this is still a much young scene in terms of experience, hence the lack of the jadedness that you will find in older, chin stroking folks such as myself. hehe.
  9. pretty sure Twister at the Derby is no longer happening and theyre looking for a new venue.
  10. bump. quality. quality. LA needs it.
