The event was a tribute to the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Deviant mixed in the full "I Have a Dream" speech in the first 25+ minutes. The rest of the set is pretty kickin', too. Thanks to all who voiced their support. Dream on, dreamers. http://www.headrushmusic.com

  3. A really great girl (who is a 6th-grade teacher) and I talked at length about all the Martin Luther King, Jr. quotes we had put out on the tables and bar; turns out she still needed a lesson plan for her classes' MLK celebrations, and I gave her all the posters and such to use in her class!!! How many teachers can say they got their materials for their class from a CLUB? At first I wondered if many people would vibe on the MLK theme, but once I saw how well-received it was, I was glad. Really glad. And Deviant's mix-in of the entire "Free at Last" speech was top-notch. I can't wait to post the set to the web site so those who couldn't make it out can hear the set. Thomar, I hope your mock trial went well this morning; You are THE MAN for sticking it out until the end!!!! And nice work on that CD mixing... See ya next week everyone! Same time, same place. http://www.headrushmusic.com

  8. Electronic Music Defense and Education Fund December 3rd, 2002 - EM: DEF Newsletter ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Racine, Wisconsin: "Disorderly House" Citations First Day in Court On Monday, December 2nd, the first 206 of 441 persons cited for attending a November 2nd, benefit concert in Racine Wisconsin were scheduled to enter pleas in court. In an attempt to dissuade individuals from challenging the $968 citations in court, Daniel Wright, the City Attorney for Racine, offered to reduce fines to $100 for anyone who pled "no contest." Mr. Wright made it clear that the deal would not apply to anyone who challenged the citations in court and subsequently lost, they would have to pay the full $968 amount. But only 19 people took the city attorney up on his offer and pled "no contest." More than 70% (147) of those who appeared in court pled "not guilty" and demanded trials! Another 40 individuals failed to appear in court and were found "guilty" by default. Last week the ACLU of Wisconsin urged the Racine City Attorney to dismiss the disorderly house citations "in the interest of resolving this matter quickly and avoiding a tremendous waste of public resources." If a similar percentage of the remaining 235 persons scheduled to appear in court on December 9th and 16th plea "not guilty" the City Attorney's office will face the logistical nightmare of having to prepare and try hundreds of cases. The City of Racine will likely be forced to hire a special prosecutor to work full time on the disorderly house cases, police officers called to testify in court will likely be paid overtime - unless police services in the community are to suffer, and additional court staff may have to be hired. In all, the City of Racine may need to try 300+ people. EM: DEF STRONGLY URGES ALL THOSE CITED TO FIGHT FOR THEIR RIGHTS AND CHALLENGE THESE MERITLESS CITATIONS. 9. "You goin' to the cluuuub? You goin' to see Oak-en-follld?"
  10. How were the sets? How was the crowd? Did the OSU game insanity and rioting prevent the dj's from spinning? Would have made it down, but had prior commitments. Please fill in... Thanx.
  11. I can't even believe a fucking thread like this would be started. Somebody, shoot me. I AM a jaded raver. Jesus. Time to retire.
  12. What up? Mudslinging? (You wouldn't happen to be talking about the pb-cle list would you?) No, I didn't know Lawler was going to be there! I subscribe to the RedZone mail list, but didn't get that notice. THANK YOU for posting! I'm trying to persuade DaVe to let us start a Cleveland-Columbus-Pittsburgh board, but so far no response. So, if there are peeps out there from the area, shout out! Let's do this. There are a lot of cool events that happen around here, it's just that we're all so damn spread out and it's tough to hear about most of them. We need a virtual meeting place to bridge the gap.
  13. "prop·a·gan·da Pronunciation Key (prp-gnd) n. The systematic propagation of a doctrine or cause or of information reflecting the views and interests of those advocating such a doctrine or cause. Material disseminated by the advocates or opponents of a doctrine or cause: wartime propaganda. Propaganda Roman Catholic Church. A division of the Roman Curia that has authority in the matter of preaching the gospel, of establishing the Church in non-Christian countries, and of administering Church missions in territories where there is no properly organized hierarchy. " Why do I call it propaganda? 1. systematic -- This is the fourth news story I've seen in ONE week by major media journalists (NY Times, National Geographic, USA Today, and AP/UPI) that write along the logic of of "raves have drugs; therefore raves are bad. Look at what our heroic law enforcement and proactive, leading governments are doing to eradicate this problem." NOT coincidentally, this is happening at the same time as legislative debate on the issue. What better way to sway uninformed public opinion? 2. Deceptive statement of purpose. If drug use and abuse is the intended target of the articles, why is binge drinking and hospitalizations due to alcohol poisoning not also mentioned as a social problem? The damn USA Today article said that where raves occur, "stoned youth trash neighborhoods." WHAT? What about riots that happen at universities such as Dayton where after street keg parties cars are overturned, homes burned....? Have you EVER seen a person on Ecstasy commit an act of violence? IT'S SIMPLY NOT TRUE. If these journalists were truly interested in awareness about issues as such, why aren't they more inclusive? It is an unfair targeting of a scene that is already grossly misunderstood. 3. The article rejects those who say it is about the music. Yet, it neglects to mention that thousands of people have brought the music "above-ground" into clubs and public venues over the past decade because they truly in it for the MUSIC. If the scene was nothing more than drugged-up addicts, would public venues survive? I am old enough to remember the 'real' raves and warehouse parties of yesteryear. The clubs and parties of today scarcely resemble those of 'back in the day.' The scene has survivied because of the music. The article is WRONG. 4. Furthermore, I'm pissed off because dj's and music producers rely on venues, promoters, and fans to EARN THEIR LIVING. Do you understand? We don't have radio to broadcast our latest Top 40 hit. We don't have a music video channel to air our latest video. Raves and clubs are our livelihood!!! If the government shuts down clubs and parties or otherwise restricts peoples' access to the music, we are outright shit outta luck for an audience to perform to. It is not fair. Is an artist not going to be allowed to earn a living at his or her talents because a dozen teenagers fuck up? I could go on and on, but this post is already too long. PLEASE take some time to educate others, be responsible, and make your voice heard. If we don't stand up for ourselves, no one else will.
  14. I don't! I just wrote the editor of USA Today, saying: 1. That their portrayal of the scene as mostly teens and that "stoned kids destroy neighborhoods" is grossly inaccurate. 2. That I'm a young professional in my 30's, and that hundreds of thousands of us are into it for the music 3. That the last party I went to, the dj ended his set with a track that had Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech in its entirety, and that a group of us of all races, colors, creeds held hands and raised them up toward the dj. That dj did more for peace and cultural understandings than any United Nations and its resolutions. Did you freakin' see that slide show of photos? That girl who was being treated by a paramedic? Why wasn't she placed on a stretcher? Why were they allowing her to lie down on the dirty sidewalk???? Maybe she had a twisted ankle? People DO injure themselves while dancing!!!! Christ, when a football player is carried off the field, he's a battle hero. When a raver needs medical attention, she's a crack whore raver. I am so sick of it... Everyone, write USA Today and educate. Please. If we don't stand up for ourselves and the legitimacy of what we love, no one else will.

  18. The rave scene is featured in a National Geographic channel (cable) show called "Taboo" today. "James," who at the time of the documentary was shown walking into work at Yoshitoshi, gives an awesome description of his first experience where the dj dropped Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" Tune in!
  19. depends on where he is flying - domestic, international? go to each airline's web site and subscribe to their e-mail notifications. The best deals are sent out from the airlines directly, usually once a week. Hope that helps
  20. National Geographic's special "Taboo" is featuring the rave scene now. Tune in if you have cable!
  21. Did you or anyone go to Moda on Saturday? I'm so frustrated. That was such an incredibly whack experience. All I wanted was to go and dance, hear good West Coast (Kramer is from San Francisco) tribal house with a good sound system, and wake up inspired on Sunday to work on some of my own dance music that I've been producing with my boyfriend. I am 100% totally wanting to support that place, but I doubt I'll ever go back, except to hear my Miami friend David Padilla spin there in January. I want to support it. I really do. But it is complete bullshit. First, we waited in line for over an hour. A wait that was completely and totally unnecessary. And the line was all guys on their cell phones, "Yeah, dude...Ya gotta come meet us at this place that just opened up on W 25th. We heard there are hotties lookin' to get laid here." Swarms and swarms of men in plaid shirts or what they perceived to eurotrendy clothing, all on their phones ready to relay their next big score to their buddies planted on a bar stool at the local sports bar. When we got in, the first thing we noticed was that the sound was completely distorted. The subs and bass were rumbling so loudly that there was a delay in all the other voices. The acoustics were horrible. It wasn't that bad when Deep Dish played, so I don't know if they added more speakers or whether it was Kramer who had the levels set as such. I doubt it, because there were a few times I could hear him bail out of a trainwreck because of the acoustic echoes bouncing around. The next thing I noticed was that the floor was so sticky I could barely walk. I had worn comfortable dancing shoes, ready to dance for four hours, and I could barely lift my feet in spots because the layers and layers of spilled booze had formed a sort of glue. In the bathroom, I had to endure getting puked on by some girl who drank too much and didn't quite make it to the toilet and half of it ended up on my shoe. Another girl was so wasted she fell and broke glass all over the place. Likewise on the drive home -- some girl opened the car door while it was en route to the shoreway and puked all over the road. Disgusting. No class. There were signs in the bathrooms warning folks not to bring drugs into the clubs. I find it hard to believe anyone would act on drugs half as whack as some of what I saw with folks so drunk. Not to mention all the folks who got behind the wheel that I DIDN'T see puking. The last thing that got on my f'ing nerve was the whole presence of people doing nothing but scamming on each other. It was absolutely disgusting. I've seen less gawking at a strip club. Whores and pimps everywhere. Moda says it's "all about the music." Well, maybe management is, but its patrons have a long way to go. Kramer dropped some very solid progressive house tracks. Tracks that are well-known, tracks that if they were being dropped at Arc, Roxy, Space would have the crowd giving the dj mad hands in the air, yet people were too busy feeling everyone's asses to give the dj any props. Moda has said it needs to "educate," and it's a good thing it realizes that it needs to. I'm all about the music, but unfortunately, I don't think I should have to pay $200 for VIP service just to get away from the whack people who consistently spilled things or puked on me. I'm sorry if I sound like a raving snob, but it really was miserable in there. I'm not sure what the solution is. It's not all Moda's fault. Maybe it's Cleveland's for not having enough places for people to go, and when a decent one opens, they all descend at once. Either way, I think that those of us who produce music and dj will continue to keep our focus on the music and hope that someday Cleveland will be a place we can showcase talent where it will be appreciated by a wider audience.
  22. Okay...Lemme know where you'll be weekend after Thanksgiving and I'll pay up! But wait! Are you a young 'un?
