  1. Deep Space ft. SHERWOOD & PINCH (LIVE) and François K.

    10pm – 3:30am

Closing night of Dub Champions Festival

    US Debut of

    SHERWOOD & PINCH (LIVE)

    and François K.

Adrian Sherwood and Pinch have developed a new live project under the moniker ‘Sherwood and Pinch’. Deep Space and Dub Champions Festival are proud to present the US Debut of this historic collaboration by these two seminal figureheads, operating within different orbits of the bass and dub scene.

Adrian Sherwood needs little introduction. For more than three decades he has been chartering the highly acclaimed On-U Sound label, building up a colossal body of work. He is known for taking his productions to the frontier by experimenting with dub and other seemingly alien sounds such as electronica, industrial grind and uncovered world music. Through On-U and beyond he has nurtured the careers of Tackhead and Mark Stewart, and has a long-standing creative relationship with Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry. He has infected the output of Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and Primal Scream through his signature production skills, with recent remixes for Django Django and Peaking Lights. A restless innovator, his 2012 album ‘Survival and Resistance’ was heralded as being ‘on murderous, devastating form’.

One of the key figures of the genre loosely regarded as ‘bass music’ Rob Ellis, better known as Pinch stands out among the fluid group of like-minded dubstep musicians that define the so-called Bristol sound. Another label owner, through his Tectonic label he has championed artists like 2562 and Skream before the eventual release with dub legend, Scientist. Other notable markers in his discography include his 2012 FABRICLIVE offering and the eponymous Pinch & Shackleton album on Honest Jon’s.

After two years of ground breaking events, Dub Champions Festival returns to New York City to celebrate the influential style known as dub, from the reggae roots to the future of electronic bass music, featuring one of a kind performances & educational workshops by the legendary artists from Jamaica who invented dub as well as the latest innovators from around the globe who have continued to push the influential style forward in electronic music and beyond. NYC label Subatomic Sound began the mission three years ago developing a week long festival here in the city and has since debuted it in Europe and this year will expand to include NYC, DC, & Philadelphia from Sept 19-23.

    FaltyDL

    Raz Mesinai

Free admission and complimentary vodka cocktails before 11pm with eflyer

FaltyDL: Drew Cyrus Lustman is a musician in love with complexity and beautiful simplicity alike. On the one hand, the 26-year-old one-time sushi chef grew up playing piano and upright bass in jazz and classical groups, and cites Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Squarepusher and Weather Report as life-changing influences; on the other, he loves clubs, loves to dance, and considers hip hop, house, jungle and UK garage to be as important as any of those virtuoso musicians.

Vitally, there is no sense of any divide between these influences – Drew does not see technical music as separate from music that is there to stimulate good feelings and soundtrack good times. His first releases in 2007 may have been unashamedly Squarepusher-influenced IDM, but they were tracks for the rave and not mere exercises in programming complexity, and listening to their tear-out jungle breaks now, they are unmistakeably the work of a man who dances in the studio. Which he does. And even more impressively, in his more recent releases, these precursors from across the globe and throughout musical history are tied together on the later tunes that brought him to global attention into a sound that could only come under the city lights of his adoptive home of New York in the 21st century.

The breakthrough with these latter tracks came when he dropped the tempo and allowed his beats to breathe, which found him a natural home on the British label Planet Mu, itself revitalised by its immersion in the possibilities of the dubstep and post-dubstep underground. Centring on the rhythms of UK garage provided the key which unlocked Drew’s natural sense of the interconnectedness of electronic funk styles, the limber beat patterns allowing him to forward from UKG into dubstep space, back into NYC’s orginal garage and further back still towards disco. The rolling rhythms of jungle were still there too, albeit sublimated, and underlying it all was the fresh-to-death gleam and defiant boom of hip hop.

His timing was impeccable: the ‘Love Is A Liability’ album and ‘Bravery’ EP came just as the post-dubstep underground was becoming far more fluid, and his easy stylistic shifts provided the perfect bridge between the new garage of artists like Brackles and Geiom, the cosmic hip hop of LA and Glasgow, and those people who were falling in love with house music all over again via Funky, Omar S and Karizma. But where some English producers might say “it’s all houseâ€, he says “it’s all hip hop! Ya dig?â€

Back in New Haven, Conneticut where he was born, a younger Drew would let his mind roam: smoking a lot of pot and “watching the paint drip off the paintings†in the Yale Art Museum, or sitting at home reading Herman Hesse’s Journey to the East and Siddhartha over and over. Now, thanks purely to those two Planet Mu releases, he is travelling in person all over the planet. Drew still has the yen to make wild jungle, and one day maybe he’ll end up back in smoky jazz clubs. But right now, he’s still as in love with current club music as the scene is with him, slipping easily between and ahead of new genre collisions even as they happen. It takes improvisatory skills to deal with a musical world that shifts and reconfigures as wildly as that of 2010 – but if anyone has those skills it’s FaltyDL.

    FaltyDL

Composer, producer, filmmaker, sound alchemist and dub visionary, Raz Mesinai has has been a cult figure in the underground New York City music & art scene for over 20 years. His work under the monikers Badawi, Sub Dub, Lady Man & The Heretic Of Ether, have caught the attention of a wide range of artists, from filmmakers Ridley Scott, Darren Aronofsky & Jonathan Demme, to such diverse musicians and producers as John Zorn, Meat Beat Manifesto, The Kronos Quartet, Kode9 and Shackleton among others.

With over a dozen albums and numerous remixes and 12"s on such iconic dub, punk, avant-garde and electronic music labels, as ROIR, Tzadik, Asphodel, Island Records, Skull Disco and Instinct, Mesinai's music remains impossible to classify, yet easily recognizable, combining aspects of traditional dub techniques, sound design, psycho-acoustic phenomenon and poly-rhythmic, trance inducing rhythms, all summed up into, what Mesinai refers to as, "Dub Fiction".

  10. It doesn’t seem like 10 years ago that three friends threw a Brazilian party and had such a great turn out that hundreds had to be turned away at the door. NYC’s veteran Club/Radio DJ, DJ True, got together with DJ/Percussionist, Miller Cruz and Event Producer, Joann Jimenez to put all their efforts into a vision named ALMA. ALMA translates to soul in Portuguese (and Spanish) but is also an acronym; “All for the Love of Music & Artâ€. The team was complete when they made upcoming singer/DJ, Manchildblack the host for the festivities and the rest became a part of NYC nightlife history.

Coming from the soul, all for the love of the music and art was exhibited at every event. These two Brazilian DJs combined their vast knowledge of music and wide network of talent to create a bold new sound with a feel that lent itself to a spiritual revival at some moments and a debaucherous carnaval at others. This sound quickly won the world over with big batucada beats, a soulful NYC cool and a high caliber of musical guests that shared their love of Brazilian culture and it’s varied inspired styles. Their events have featured Louie Vega and The Elements of Life, Joe Claussell, Rich Medina, Osunlade, Bobbito, The Martinez Brothers, DJ Afro, DJ Karizma, Turntables on the Hudson, King Britt and an endless list of underground dance music’s favorite artists.

The ALMA events ran for five years and abruptly ended to the sadness of many of its fans. Now, five years since it’s end, the original ALMA team gets together for a one time only event to kick off this year's carnaval! Expect all of the elements that made this party both famous and infamous to be in full gear as they celebrate the relocation of Miller Cruz to Germany.

Many have tried to fill the void that the ALMA parties left behind, but very few have even come close. Don't miss your last chance to see why this party was adored by so many.
