    Mostly Brazilian...

The DJs have a Brazilian party but their musical selection

Dress up is always more fun when it's of the naughty nature. This strictly all-black attire evening (latex, leather and lace suggested) will once again join the "neo-brasilian fusion" beats of ALMA with the sexier, deepa Grooves of house.

If you missed the last couple of times these folkis got together, you'll want to reserve in advance. With both crews infamous for their sun-kissed, groove-lovin’ hotties, this dancefloor should be well worth dressing up for and wonderfully lacking in scary things.

    Black attire a must!

While everyone floods mid-town Manhattan for the annual Brazil Day festivities, down in the West Village ALMA continues to celebrate the real independent spirit of Brazilian music. DJs True and Miller Cruz lay down their classic “Neo-Brasilian Fusion†for music lovers and dancers of every nationality, at this very special monthly event. With a sound already unlike any other, these purveyors of block rocking beats have called on:

"…The man the stars call when they want that otherworldly flavor in the mix…" - Time Out New York

Since arriving in the U.S. in 1980 from his native country Brazil, Cyro Baptista has emerged as one of the premier percussionists in the country. Coinciding with the rise in the public’s interest of world music, Cyro has managed to record and tour with some of music’s most popular names. His mastery of Brazilian percussion and the many instruments he creates himself, have catapulted him into world renown and have landed him on 5 Grammy award winning albums.

Cyro's credits read like a "Who’s Who" of modern music. He toured extensively with Yo-Yo Ma's Brazil Project, Trey Anastasio's Band (of Phish), John Zorn's Electric Masada, Herbie Hancock's "Gershwin’s World", Sting and Paul Simon's "Rhythm of the Saints".

As if their resident master resident drummer, Caco de Oliviero’s resume wasn’t impressive enough, Cyro has performed and recorded with the likes of: David Byrne, Kathleen Battle, Gato Barbieri, Dr. John, Brian Eno, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Robert Palmer, Melissa Etheridge, Laurie Anderson, John Zorn, James Taylor, Carly Simon, Michael Tilson Thomas, Daniel Barenboin, Bobby McFerrin, Wynton Marsalis, Yo-Yo-Ma, Medeski Martin & Wood, Spyro Gyra, Trey Anastasio from Phish, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, Santana and Sting. He has also played with many respected Brazilian artists such as Milton Nascimento, Caetano Veloso, Ivan Lins, Marisa Monte, and Nana Vasconcelos. And yes, this is just to name a few.

Expect nothing but pure adrenaline on a sound system that’ll shake the earth. Also joining them will be Capoeira Palmares. Capoeira Palmares is a traditional Capoeira group with a school based in Astoria Queens for almost 10 years. Their style of Capoeira is ever smooth and eye-catching with lots of super-fluid and swinging movements. They have done numerous TV spots including Telemundo 47 and Good day New York. Manchildblack and Muzikbutrfly will provide that warm, down home, Brazilian hospitality for the masses. This is definitely one you won’t want to miss.

There is a special element that comes with parties that cater to the curious and open-minded, and with the new generation of LGTB being unafraid to explore in co-ed environments, it becomes that much more interesting. One of the most promising of these new experimental mixers will be from the same folks that brought you the always sexy Brazilian ALMA parties. Muzikbutrfly, Manchildblack and their mighty dance massive plan to meet the need for a pride party that represents the full spectrum of the community, particularly people of color, whose hues aren’t necessarily represented in the rainbow.

But you don’t have to be caramel coated like resident DJ True and his partner-in-crime from ALMA, Miller Cruz to get a slice of Flan. It’s the perfect dessert for anyone after the main course of the Pride Parade, serving up many more musical sides to this delectable duo than their trademark Neo-Brasilian Fusion fare.

The crew has called on two New York veterans exclamatory of their top quality musical standard to program the evening’s affair. The best of the Bronx meets the best from Brooklyn with Andre Collins and Carlos Sanchez both laying down sets conducive to free movement, celebrating life, being one’s self and sharing it with the world.

Carlos Sanchez’s past experiences have earned him noteworthy residencies from his debut at Leviticus, NYC to his current popular weekly party RHYTHM, with partner DJ/Promoter Fred Pierce, already in it's fourth year. When not spinning in the club, you can catch Carlos in the studio where his keyboard and vocal arrangement skills are often employed by top artists, producers and on his own behalf, with the Carlos Sanchez Movement. Andre Collins, on the other hand, is the original DJ of the legendary Warehouse parties with Mike Stone in the Bronx. He’s held residencies at Vinyl, the exciting new club Love, as well as being one of the chosen few to successfully rock The Shelter’s main floor for maestro Timmy Regisford.

The combination of these four exceptional DJs is sure to keep the crowd moving to the early AM hours, providing an alternative to the segregated pride events that divide the community each year. A portion of the proceeds will go to The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Community Center. Get there early for goodies, raffles and slices of flan, of course. Flan hopes to create unity the old fashioned way, through music and dance, giving everyone their sweetest desserts for Pride.
