  12. Hernan's Latest Column from Resident Advisor: Original Article Link: http://www.residentadvisor.net/column_view.asp?id=60&columnID= My last column ended up with me on the Renaissance tour in Asia. From there I was off back home to be based in Buenos Aires for a few months - doing gigs all around the Americas. First on the trip was Iquique, in a city north of Santiago in Chile - had a really good time playing to a great crowd full of tourists from all over the country. Argentina was next - to play Loquitas in Cordoba - the second biggest city in the country and it was like playing in my house. A fantastic but small club that only holds about 800 people with a great sound system and one of the best crowds I've seen in ages. This was the club I was meant to play at on NYE, so it was great to be back and finally playing after all that happened. Local hero Facu Carri warmed up perfectly and then I followed with a long set of house, prog and breaks till the police forced us to finish. Amazing night. It was Panama City's turn next with another top night as with the whole of Central America. I really enjoy catching up with the both the South and North as it's becoming a must have for every tour. Same next gig in Guayaquil, Ecuador where I've played before but this time was much much better and everybody seems to getting the music in top form. Close to Guayaquil was Lima, Peru at a club called La Huaca and my best night even in the country where, again, I played till very late and everyone seemed to be having a great time as was I. After that flew to North America to play the Renaissance Masters Tour and of course the WMC. First night was at Crobar in NY on a really cold night. Luckily the Newyorkers didn't seem to care much and they filled the club very early to the excellent sounds of Jason Jollins and Ariel Baund who opened with some very deep stuff. I followed for 4 hours later in the evening - playing full variety of sounds I like and it worked out really really well. Saturday was Chicago and enjoyed a lot playing to a younger crowd who enjoyed a more energetic side of my set. Then it was the turn of San Francisco, one of my fav cities around the world and played Ruby Skye along Mark Farina who absolutely rocked the crowd early night. I finished after him taking things to the next level. Also in San Fran I had the pleasure to be invited to the Apple headquarters to meet the Emagic team. These are the people behind the audio software like Logic and Garage band and it was really interesting to interact with all of them and learn a little about the future of the production technology. Saturday I was in Seattle at a club called Medusa. It was enjoyable to play at this former cabaret club with one of the smallest DJ booths I'd ever seen. The crowd wad great and the strangest thing was that after the night, the same venue turns into a hip hop afterhours. Weird... but great fun. Next it was the WMC and the first gig for me was the RA party at Spin with Infusion and Bill Patrick. I'm sure you've already read about how good the party was, seen the pics, etc, etc so I would only like to say thanks to RA's Paul and Nick for inviting me to be part of such an excellent night. See u next year! Friday night was the Perfecto party at Crobar and as usual with Oakenfold, the club was rammed early on. I played the first set to an already busy floor and keep things housey waiting for the arrival of Perfecto's man Paul Oakenfold who got things going in full effect. Saturday it was the Ultra music festival after party at the American Airlines Arena with Sasha & Digweed, Unkle, JZ and me. Unfortunately due to the fire marshal nonsense, the fantastic venue opened 3 hours late so James Zabelia and I did a little bit of back to back, with James Lavelle played for an hour afterwards and finally S&D with only 2 hrs to play! A big shame really. The production was incredible, sound, lights and all was perfect, but all for just 4.30 hrs in total. Crazy... Those were my gigs at this year's WMC... but I had time to attend some other parties. This included the Bedrock night with Luke Fair and Desyn Masiello and as usual, the best night of the conference Mr Danny Howells at Bed. One more week and it was the Southfest, a mid-sized festival in Buenos Aires, Argentina where I played along Faithless, Sasha & John, Mylo and more local DJs and even with the inevitable rain it was a big success with an attendance of almost 20,000. Same artist (and loads more) the next weekend we went to Sao Paulo, Brazil to play Skol Beats, along with Creamfields in Argentina, the biggest festival in Latin America and once again like every year it was amazing to see more than 50,000 Brazilians having the party of their lives. Finally being one of my favourite DJ's it was great to see Diggers becoming such a big star in South America and every time he plays around, he always rocks better and more crowds go mad. At the same time it was really interesting to see Sasha playing Live on his custom controller. He seems to be really into it and his set at the Ultra afterparty in Miami was amazing. I was in the Americas for a couple more weekends and flew to Seattle to play House of Blues with the Chemical Brothers. It was part of a small tour we did together earlier last month that included an amazing gig in Oakland at the Herny Kaiser amphitheatre where I opened for New Order and the Chems at Coachella, the best festival in America and maybe the whole world. It was really great to share the stage with one of the bands that a long time ago made me decide to do what I do today and see they can still rock a crowd big time. I love New Order! It was time to start the European season - so I moved back to London to start the summer at The Gallery. I play at least once every 3 months at The Gallery and always enjoy it as they have one of the friendliest crowds around - full of students from all around the world. Saturday was on to Renaissance at Stealth in Nottingham and their last night at that venue. Marcus James and I had a great time. He is the man responsible for the Renaissance label and is playing better every day. He warmed up with amazingly smooth but funky to keep everyone on the floor and in the perfect mood and then I followed playing some house, prog, tech and some wicked acid too. Next weekend it was Renaissance @ Q Club in Zurich and enjoyed a lot my first time in the country. Only sad thing was not to be able to stay and do a little bit of a tour of such a beautiful city but as you know we DJ's are always on the move. Saturday was a party called Pleasures in Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro along side Matthew Dekay and probably the best night of the year so far for me. I already said how much I like to play Eastern Europe and this was no exception as every single one in that room was having a blast. Can't wait to go back again. One more week into the summer in Europe and I was on a Thursday night playing in Kozami, Greece at a club called Da luz, an hour and half from Thessalonikki and as you may know, Greeks really know how to party so I had a really nice time. Friday was the time to play Pacha in Barcelona. And I've mentioned previously in my column, that if you want to see Argentineans and can't go South America, then just go to BCN. There is an almost endless supply of them there which means that every time I play it's like playing in Buenos Aires - so you can imagine all the reaction. It was so good this year that they had to cut the electricity to make me stop playing music. Saturday and the last day of this column was a double header for me as I was playing Arena 1 at Homelands, the first festival of the UK season and then onto Renaissance @ The Cross in London. Homelands was very good this year. I played mid afternoon and then stayed for a while to catch John Digweed absolutely rocking the Arena. The weather was great and I wanted to stay but had to drive back to London for Renaissance and as every time I play that night it's always a great one. Marcus was again opening perfectly, I followed for 3 hrs and then Nigel Dawson finished in top form. Top night and the last one of this report. Coming soon... Greece, The Coloursfest, Madrid, Amsterdam, Newcastle, Ibiza, Hungary and loads more. - Hernan
