CHICAGO—With already more than 100 releases under his belt since 2003, U.K. producer Calvertron (aka Alex Calver) drops one of his dirtiest loads to date on Chicago’s Potty Mouth Music Label. This time he’s partnered with Bristol, U.K. production duo Itchyfeet on their latest EP “Dwarf Porn,†out now on PMM. Double-teamed with two original bangers ‘Dwarf Porn’ and ‘Grifter’, both tracks on the EP include heavy use of vocals by Steve Kyte from the Robsapians, twisting words with retro finesse reminiscent of The Streets. Manchester-turned-New Zealand-producer Magik Johnson adds to the ep with a dark rerub remix of the title cut. Calvertron, producing since 2002, has carved a niche in both the electro and techno scene as a solo artist and as one half of Twocker, a collaboration with producer Will Bailey. More recently, Calvertron has produced under the alias Kalva and has continued to run his successful Jack Knife Records based in the southwest U.K. On this EP, Alex partners with Itchyfeet, the production outfit of Andy Lane and Gareth Morgan. The duo’s signature chunky, funked-up basslines find a match with Calvertron’s big-room grooves that drive, bang and build, first taking audiences to the brink then dropping them down with a heavy boom. All three producers collaborated in Calvertron’s studio and landed their first joint production on PMM. The producer says both tracks take on the signature of his electro-heavy basslines, but it’s the Kyte’s vocals that define the EPs unique vibe. “Both titles are taken from the lyrics in each track, with Grifter being a type of bicycle that was very popular before BMX’s in the U.K.,†Calvertron says. “The title track’s lyric says something about someone’s girlfriend showing his dwarf porn to her friends. We thought it was quite memorable—and fun!†Putting a hazier, progressive spin on the EP is acclaimed producer Magik Johnson, who has collaborated with renowned house and techno talent as part of Darren Emerson’s Underwater roster. Since launching his own imprint Magiktrax, Johnson has gone on to release his nuanced tracks and remixes on other labels of acclaimed artists including Jesse Rose’s Made to Play, Nic Fanciullli’s Saved, and King Unique’s Curfew, to name a few. His early days as a staple of Manchester’s Hacienda continue to influence his prolific body of production work. Influences run deep on PMM 028 with the joint debut of Calvertron vs. Itchyfeet. CHICAGO—On their fifth EP for Chicago-based digital label Potty Mouth Music, DJ/Producers Chris Santiago & Tim Bushido push their evolving sound to new limits with the release of “UWLMF EP†and “Makeout Mixtape Sessions #02.†The 27th original EP on PMM not only delivers a spectrum of groove-heavy sounds that bang and bump through three distinct tracks, it also features kinetic vocals of DJ/Producer Colette slicing through the beat of the EP’s lead track, “Make Me Feel.†Tapping Colette for their latest PMM project was a given for Santiago & Bushido, who collaborated on her 2007 artist album “Push.†In remixing a vocal sample from their original recording session, S&B meld voice and bassline to create a melodic track that delivers a big room jolt. “I think it’s great we got to work with Colette again on something that’s a little trackier and reflects more of the Potty Mouth sound,†Bushido says on their studio collaboration. All the tracks on this release have a purpose! Terry Mullan - Some seriously classy top drawer house on this EP. Rocky Darren (X-Press 2) - Dancing on the Black Keys is my fave. Stuart Patterson (MOS Radio) - Another great Fresh Meat release. The originals here will be getting plays from me. Luke McKeehan - Fresh Meat is on fire! Hard to choose a fave but the chugging vibe of iambic is working for me. Neil Quigley - Nice tracks, will play the Kris Wadsworth remix. The Timewriter - Dancing on the Black Keys is the one for me. Pete Heller - Like the techno stabby Kris Wadsworth mix. Good stuff. Tom Budden - All are very nice, will have lots of plays from me. Dave DK - Nice deep classic tracks. like them all. My favorite might be Dancing on the Black Keys. Spencer Parker - Dancing on the Black Keys is dope...will rock it at Sonar! Tiger Stripes - Totally into iambic. Excellent! Ben Murphy (DJ Mag) - The funk is strong with this one and that's what it's all about right? A bit more grit is what we need! Nacho Marco - Good work, liking all tracks and will support. Worthy - iambic is my favorite, love the drum programming and the synth stabs are so perfect. Johnny Fiasco - Kris Wadsworth remix floats my boat!! Marco Resmann (Luna City Express) - Pretty nice 4 tracker. I like all mixes.
