msoprano
This was taken from the vip board:In order to open up a nightclub in New York City, you'd better be an angelor a saint. At least, that's the impression I got watching the two-hour songand dance given by Crobar representatives to Community Board 4 lastWednesday night. Club owners Callin Fortis and Ken Barilich did everythingto prove that they are model citizens, not like those other club owners(Sleazy, Shady, and Skanky). Fortis and Barilich brought in an army ofpeople to testify before the board-including former Miami Beach mayor NeisenKasdin, ex-special narcotics prosecutor for New York City Robert Silbering, and, believe it or not, a Tibetan monk, the Venerable Nicholas Vreeland, aliaison for the Tibet Center on 32nd Street, who gamely offered, "I guessI'm here to represent the spiritual side of Crobar." The only people notpresent to vouch for Cal and Ken: their mothers. It worked. The board approved 38-8 to open a club on 530 West 28th Street, across the way from the ill-fated Twilo and Tunnel. The space-at 40,000square feet-is gargantuan, and has been eyed over the years by many clubowners, including Peter Gatien, whose name was invoked repeatedly at themeeting, since a Page Six item had linked him to the Crobar peeps. Ofcourse, Fortis and Barilich did everything to distance themselves from thefallen club king. At one point, a community board member read parts from aletter written by Space owner Luis Puig-a competitor of Crobar in SouthBeach-implying Crobar was in cahoots with Gatien. Apparently, Puig had alsoset his sights on the West 28th Street spot, but after turning down an offerfrom Gatien, claimed that Gatien told him he'd "never have that building."Puig suggested Crobar and Gatien had set up a similar partnership deal. Fortis denied an association, stating that the charges were "put out thereintentionally to hurt us," and told the board, "Luis Puig and Peter Gatienwould have made terrific partners." Ouch. If Fortis and Barilich are in a deal with Gatien, they are doing a fine jobof pissing on his already tarnished image. Next step for the dapper,tall-and-tanned Adonis Crobar boys-a week's vaca, and hopefully approvalfrom state and city agencies for a real superclub. bsb2002
everyone celebrates now, but the only thing that is really important is who the DJs are. and no one seems to have a clue about that. Crobar Chicago is horrible, so don't get too excited. sorry to be a downer
rocketfuel76
to agree. But I've been to crobar in Chicago and it absolutely sucked. It reminded me more of a gothic kinda place, all the workers were dressed in Goth Clothes, and the music was pretty Much horrible. There was this guest DJ from the UK forget the name., there the one night I went, and even he SUCKED. In retrospect though, I hope maybe they will change it a bit. P.S. the line also sucked, I had to pass the door man $20.00 not to wait on the block long line, and once I got in, I was sadly, not impressed. I also didn't only go to this place once, I gave it about 3 trys before I decided that IT REALLY SUCKED. But again, who knows????
