Dj Instruction In Nyc?

Recommended Posts

Haven't heard of any. If you can, find a friend who knows how to spin. Buy a headphone splitter and listen in to what he/she is doing.

Best to just start practicing on your own. You can't really be taught to process a monitor in one ear and a headphone in the other...it just takes time to get acclimated and separate the sounds in your brain. It also takes some time to figure out whether you need to speed up or slow down the incoming record...it will come with practice.

Definitely best if you can play your monitor at a decent volume...otherwise, it can be difficult to learn how to mix. Don't touch the EQs for a while--learn to mix without them. In fact, I recommend starting off with a really shitty mixer without the bells and whistles so that you know what to do when you're in a club that doesn't have a fancy mixer. Figure out what it is you need before upgrading to the expensive stuff. Invest in good needles (Ortofons are nice), though, and a can of Groove Glide--that will protect your investment in vinyl.

Good luck!

THANKS!

it'd be a total waste of money to pay to learn to spin trance. why? because you'll get the basic hang of it after spinning for a month maybe 2-3 hours a day. you're not gonna learn anything special by taking classes. i could see the advantage of taking classes if you're maybe into hiphop and turntablism cuz there's a lot of straight up technique to learn there, but even that its always cheaper to find a friend, or go to some bar/club night and chill by the booth.

to spin trance and house you basically need to know how to beatmatch, be able to differentiate between the monitor and headphone and have some sense of track selection (which you wont learn by taking classes anyway that shit takes years). its pretty much straight up play track, mix into another one, repeat.....not as much fucking around as with other styles like techno, hiphop, dnb, possibly breaks.

Seriously......forget about lessons. They will do you very little good.

Find someone that knows how to spin and ask them the basic dynamics of A) the mixer B) the turntable C) the vinyl D) the music and the measures

With that in place, all you gotta do is now learn to beatmatch and come in differently on tracks. This will take a while and cannot be taught. You will learn through lots and lots of practice and will take you a long time to be at ease with. It is the easiest concept to grasp, but it is the hardest to master. Believe me though, it won't seem like practice because in reality, all you are doing is playing music you bought and you like.

Good Luck
