Audi A8 Quattro L

The Audi A8 is a car for people who demand absolutely top-drawer luxury and power, but who aren't especially interested in showing off. When the A8 rolls by, few people realize they've just been in the presence of a $67,200 luxury/performance sedan packing a 310-horsepower V-8 engine and full-time Quattro all-wheel drive. Try keeping a low profile in comparable machines: You'll stand out like Don King's hair.

This can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on what you're after. Status symbols are great, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with flash and image -- if you are into calling attention to yourself. Luxury land yachts like the Mercedes-Benz S500 and Bentley Arnage absolutely revel in their Big Kahuna stage presence. Valets are impressed; people take notice.

But there's a case to be made for keeping a lower profile, too. You know you are successful; does the whole world need to be informed? If this more demure approach to life describes your philosophy, the smooth and subtle A8 may be the best choice for you.

Built on an entirely aluminum frame and chassis called an Aluminum Space Frame (ASF), the A8 is both light for its size and virtually impervious to rust. It is also exceptionally strong, and is, therefore, among the safest big cars on the market. The subtle body shell hides a first-class cabin, which is set off by the cheery nighttime glow of the trademark Audi red-backlit instruments. The A8's supple seats are stitched up in high-grade Valcona leather and surrounded by soft-toned woods on the console and door panels. Everything you'd expect in the way of power accessories is present, of course, but it's the secure-in-itself presence and vault-like comfort of the car that make it a top pick.

While there's a less-expensive version of the A8 available (the $62,200 standard model), it's the long-wheelbase L version that provides the ultimate in luxury cruising comfort for up to six adults. Seated in back, you can stretch your legs to their full extension (NBA players excepted); most occupants under 6 feet 4 inches tall will find plenty of open space in which to spread out. At the $60,000 level, the $5,000 premium Audi asks for the longer-wheelbase A8 L is relative chump change. It's comparable to an $800 sunroof on a $20,000 Accord: no big deal, and definitely worth the extra coin.

The A8's standard Quattro all-wheel-drive system is an unusual feature in a high-end sedan; it is not offered, for example, on the BMW 7-Series, Jaguar XJ8, Lexus LS430, Infiniti Q45, or Mercedes S-Class. This is perhaps the A8's strongest selling point for those interested in the best poor-weather handling and control. Big and heavy rear-drive luxury cars like the Mercedes S-Class are infamous for getting loose in the snow, and will slide more readily on wet roads than the sure-footed A8.

That doesn't mean the A8 can take on heavy drifts or forge up unpaved hunting trails, but it does mean you might get to work one snowy January morning while your neighbor in his BMW is waiting for someone to come pull him out of the ditch. Next: Mercedes S-Class...
