mugwump
Alan Oldham Aka DJ T1000 (named after the liquid metal terminator in the Terminator 2 movie), played an integral part in the early development and growth of techno in Detroit through his radio show 'Fast Forward', which he hosted between 1987 and 1992. The show was essential for the development of techno in Detroit and provided an outlet for a veritable who's who of techno to first get their music heard within their local community. Artists such as Derrick May (Oldham played much of his unreleased material straight from reel to reel), Carl Craig, Ritchie Hawtin and Kenny Larkin all had their first airplay on Oldham's show. In 1992, Oldham, whose DJ sets had attracted the attention of Underground Resistance's Mike Banks, replaced Jeff Mills for UR's World Power Alliance world tour. This experience, which Oldham describes as 'profoundly life changing', moved him to start up his Generator label, which became one of the first labels to set up the Detroit distribution collective that is Submerge. With Generator, Oldham had a very firm idea and philosophy regarding the type of music he intended to put out. Frustrated with the many fly by night labels that were coming out of Detroit, his aim was to create a label that would, above all, remain consistent, whilst maintaining a busy release schedule. Oldham was also keen to expand the label out of Detroit and into world recognition, perhaps as a result of his experiences on tour with UR. To achieve this he signed musical talent from around the world, artists like Dave Clarke, Mind Design and Woody McBride all helped to achieve his aim. As well as this Oldham put out a steady and uncompromising set of sonic assaults under various guises. His music, influenced heavily by the variety of musical styles he regularly spun back in his 'Fast Forward' days that included industrial, hip-hop, punk and the electronic pop music of Deee-Lite, helped push the boundaries of what could techno could be.
