mugwump
I was lucky enough to have metthe members of stereolab on a couple ocasions.I remember the First time that I ever heard "Transient Random-Noise Bursts With Announcements"I was mesmerized. The haunting beauty and simplicity of their particular sound ; part kraut-rock, part Velvet undergroundesque repetative minimlaism layered with retro moog frequencies and backed up by Laetitia Sadier's French pop lyrics was perfect. It was electronic retro indie pop with an ethereal edge and I fellin love with them emediately.
mugwump
At the time I was having an affair with My Bloody Valentines and the shoe gazers in the guitar spectrum of things and they fit in just fine.A couple years later I found myself sitting at Maxwells in Hoboken NJ chatting with all five members of the band eating Pizza (the Beauty of Maxwells has always been the intimacy of the space due to it's layed back cafe type set up and size.)Early on in the night I had over heard Mary Hansencall out one of the member's sisters called Maud and I said Hey my name is "maudy" "That's quite a coincidence." she said andMary being sweet, charming and hysterically funny invited me to their table. mugwump
I was star struck and humbled as a few fans and the band started to have a Pepperoni fight before the show. Also sitting at the table with us was Kim Gordon (sonic Youth)and the duo from a yet unknown band called Chibo Mato as well as Adam Yauch (Beasties) and a really fat guy called Pappa Chubby who kept trying to steal my slice. I kept trying to pinch myself to see if I was dreaming.Needless to say The show later on that night was phenomenal!Layered with fuzzy guitars, moogs, Latetia Sadier's beautiful voice backed up by Mary's RETRO-bop style vocal delivery. It was pure Kraut-Pop heaven.
mugwump
I was also lucky enough, throughout the years ,to catch them every time they came to N.Y. Summer Stage, Irvin Plaza etc..I was always there and I always got to catch up with them after the show. They became one of the few Rock acts that would pass through town which knew me by name. Hey "It's Maudy that sounds like Howdy and rhymes with Rowdy" (Mary would always say to me and I'd giggle.)Last time I saw her she was wearing a Statue of liberty hat walking down st.Marks throwing Jelly Beans at people. She was a sweet, charming, talented and extremely down to earth person. Her simple "strummed out" guitar chords and her voice will be missed by any one that ever had the luck of hearing them LIVE. mugwump
Today I have everything they have ever made and still throw on a Stereolab album almost weekly. No matter how much I listen to electronic sounds, Techno or break beats I can always turn back to STEREOLAB for a dreamlike doze of "Space age bachellor pad music". Mary may have passed on but Stereolab will always live on my stereo. I just wish I could have seen one of indie moog/rock's most underated bands one last timebefore she passed away. georgym
What a tragedy. Im not sure what role she played in the band, but they're the type that if they lose one member, it's hard to get back into the swing of things.Damn
barvybe
dag...that sucksmet them all in 1993 - 1994 when they played some place in Danbury, CT (year, drove all the way from the city for it). While their style wasn't for everyone, you gotta love the creativity and unique sound. LIke the french version of Bonnie and Clyde...What's up maudy? crosspatrick
That is awful news, i wouldn't say i knew much about the band but i always enjoyed their album dots and loops. I wonder are they going to stay together, i remember one of my friends telling me that this was going to be their largest tour and that they were starting to get larger audiences at their shows, its such a shame that just as they were starting to get a bit of success this terrible tragedy happens. My Bloody Valentine brillant band second best Irish band of all time after a band called the Whipping Boy
