a midwife assists in childbirth

...typically during a home birth...

When I was young (like, 6 or so) my Mom said that if she ever had any more children, she would want to have a midwife deliver them, and for me to be present during the delivery...

I was absolutely horrified at the thought... :worry::shake:

It's not in practice anymore (not that I know of!). It was practiced way back when, during times of aristocracy and huge class divisions. Parenting wasn't all warm and fuzzy the way we view it today. Rich mothers would send their children off right away to some peasant women.

I thought that women stopped making milk once a baby stops nursing for a while. so would the wet nurse just go from baby to baby to keep the milk flowing?

Yeah, it usually does. I think they gave the baby to someone who was still nursing her own child. But I guess that if a woman just never stopped nursing, she'd keep producing milk.
