It's not in practice anymore (not that I know of!). It was practiced way back when, during times of aristocracy and huge class divisions. Parenting wasn't all warm and fuzzy the way we view it today. I thought that women stopped making milk once a baby stops nursing for a while. so would the wet nurse just go from baby to baby to keep the milk flowing? I want a wet nurse! Yeah, it usually does. I think they gave the baby to someone who was still nursing her own child. But I guess that if a woman just never stopped nursing, she'd keep producing milk.
