URBAN TALK: SEAN CUSICK'S WORD 9

George Bush and his culture regime are making it difficult to take much pride in being an American any more. The pictures that have made their way out of the Abu Ghraib prison produce similar feelings in me to those of a lynching. There is the same sort of celebratory arrogance in them, people standing around eager to take credit for the action, laughing. To be able to take those sorts of trophy pictures requires an absolute contempt for the person you are abusing. It must be necessary for you to consider them as you might another species, not even human any more.

We've all seen pictures of hunters posing with their guns next to some deer they've just slain or a huge fish hanging on a line. But to do it to another human being reminds me of the very worst pictures I've seen from the civil rights atrocities in America; a bunch of ignorant rednecks standing around next to a dead black body that has been lynched or hung. It is impossible not to notice the homo-erotic undertones of those pictures. They are a deeply pornographic type of violence. War seems like such good sexy fun.

MICHEL DE HEY, HEY-TECH TECHNO!

Michel de Hey, awarded 'Best Dutch Techno DJ' last year, is still going strong with a new release on his recently launched 'Hey! Records' as well playing in some very exciting places over the next couple of weeks. After his EC Records, CC Records and Brave New World, Michel launched Hey! Records in November last year. The label's aim is to release only records under Michel's own name with 'Do u want me?' as the follow up to his first release, 'Down and Out', on the imprint.

After playing in the massive MayDay event in Germany two weeks ago, Michel is now preparing for a few other big events and is very excited about Fast Forward Dance Parade and Strike One in Rotterdam, Global Gathering, Awakenings, and WIRE04 - Japan's leading Techno event that is happening over two days this year. Michel has again been invited by Carl Cox this year for his Ibiza parties. The two play will in Malta on 15th May before flying to Ibiza together to play two days later.

Michel is especially looking forward to playing at Feyenoord's massive 'De Kuip' stadium in his hometown of Rotterdam:

Living in Rotterdam the Kuip is a special thing for me. Playing in the same stadium as Prince and the Rolling Stones or the Dutch football team, makes me smile. I am looking forward to this, I hope the weather gods will also help so it will become a memorable day. Anyway I will bring a football so I can score a goal in the Kuip!!!

Another project Michel has been working on is the Dutch TV program 'De Vreemde Eend', based on 'Faking It' (originally from Channel 4 in the UK; DJ Demi from Deeper Substance has done the same for them), where he helps a young violist to become a DJ in three weeks for entry into a DJ contest where a jury will decide who's the "fake" DJ among them. During shooting, the girl lived near Rotterdam for three weeks so Michel de Hey was able to instruct her several times a week. The show will be broadcast on KRO on 27th May next.

Also coming out is the new Secret Cinema vs Michel de Hey 'I Hate Trends'. For a complete update on all new releases you can check Michel de Hey's new online record store heystore.nl! (05/12/04)

i just walked through an episode of law and order.

yeah - they shoot everywhere in the city. I always see that old grumpy cop around, I think he lives near CPW or somethin. I used to Sex & the City everywhere too -- they were always over in the Meat Packing District during the afternoons - over by Pastise & Stella McCarteny.

Low-Carb Diets Can Cause Bad Breath

1 hour, 53 minutes ago Add Health - HealthDay to My Yahoo!

THURSDAY, May 13 (HealthDayNews) -- The Atkins diet might chase away more than just unwanted pounds -- it could lead to bad breath that chases away your friends.

But there are ways to battle halitosis caused by low-carb dieting, says the Academy of General Dentistry.

Low-carb diets work by getting the body to burn stored fat as fuel rather than carbohydrates. As that fat burns, chemicals known as ketones build up in the body. They are released through the breath and urine, and they can be smelly.

The types of food ingested also play a role, academy spokesman Dr. Bruce DeGinder said in a prepared statement.

"Most cases of bad breath originate from the breakdown of food particles that produce sulfur compounds, and from bacteria on the gums and tongue," DeGinder said. "High protein foods can produce more sulfur compounds, especially overnight on the surface of the tongue when saliva production is diminished."

To combat this bad breath, the academy suggests that dieters:

Drink plenty of water to wash away germs in the mouth.

Chew sugarless gum or parsley.

Keep a toothbrush handy and brush after every meal.

And if the bad breath persists, see a doctor. Halitosis can be a sign of a more serious condition, such as diabetes.

Here's where you can learn more about halitosis.

4 years apparently - buzz cut circa 1999, buzz cut circa 2004!

I agree -- hot weather is not for work attire --- the subways are so nasty hot for dress shirt/pants & more! I love hot weather but only if I'm loungin on the beach.
