daveespa
POLICE SLAY SUSPECT IN CHELSEA RAID By PHILIP MESSING and ERIKA MARTINEZ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------May 23, 2003 -- Cops serving a search warrant at a warehouse in Chelsea fatally shot a man yesterday afternoon, police said. Details on the shooting remained sketchy last night, but sources said the violence erupted at 4:19 p.m. when officers assigned to the Staten Island Task Force descended upon a storage warehouse at West 27th Street and 11th Avenue to serve a search warrant there. It was not immediately clear why the cops were serving the warrant, but while carrying out their task, an unidentified suspect interrupted the officers by entering a restricted area, sources said. The suspect began to struggle with at least one cop - prompting one officer to fire a shot that left the suspect with what appeared at first to be a "superficial wound," according to a spokesman for the Fire Department. The wounded man, whose name was not released, was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital in serious condition, with gunshots in his chest and leg. He died at 7:09 p.m., police said. The officer was treated at Bellevue Hospital for trauma, police said. The other three arrested in the raid were identified as Bronx residents Raphael Iriebi, 36, and Ismaila Snow, 33, who were charged with trademark counterfeiting, and Mohammed Sylla, 28, who was charged with disorderly conduct.
