The House of Diabolique Top Ten House Songs of 1999

1. 'Be Yourself' by Celeda

'Be Yourself' is the NYC anthem of 1999. The deep organ bass can best be appreciated inside of a speaker (at the expense of your ear drums). How does Danny Tenaglia create such depth in one noise? What the song lacks in pace it makes up for in versatility; the deep-throated vocal can be dropped onto other tracks throughout a night, no matter how disparate, making it more than just a song, but a philosophy for the entire night.. 'Be Yourself' is a rallying cry for NYC clubland and an embodiment of this thing we call house.

2. 'Someone To Hold' by Veronica

Johnny Vicious walks closely to that line called cheese, but he brings with him a razor sharp edge of musicality and originality. The goofy break in this song is both cheesy and wonderful, and altho he's overused the synth noise by now, he's never used it better than here. Unlike Razor & Guido, he can create energy with more than overly pounding beats; instead, he uses stuttering synthesizers, clever arrangements, unexpected breaks and witty juxtapositions. He also overlays his dreamy, lyrical elements with an intricacy usually reserved for trance songs.

3. 'Space Manoeuvers' by Stage One

'Space Manoeuvers' is an atmospheric masterpiece.. and the highest trance song on our list. Truth be told I like it as much as the top two tracks but it isn't 'house' so #3 it stays. What 'Space Manouevers' lacks in energy it makes up for in production value and imagination; this is futurist trance techno existentialism... lonliness, wonder and love as we float through outer space... or our mother's womb, and hear her beating heart..

4. 'Weep' by Razor n Guido

Razor 'n Guido's 'Weep' - like their own 'This Joy' - represents them at their best. This non-stop, overwhelming onslaught of beats creates a frenzy of energy. Just when you think they can't take you any higher, they do.. they aren't afraid to use every cheap trick in the book; this is their strength, but also their weakness...

5. 'Joy' by Gay Dad

'Joy' is the most underappreciated song of 1999... not a club 'hit' because lacks the momentum of tribal house and of course, no divas for the gay boys... however, I get goosebumps when I hear those buzzing synths and that man.. full of so much joy he needs to cry it out... he takes us with him into that stratosphere of love and joy.. truly a wonderful song! The entire 10 minute song listened to at once can send me into a hypnotic r*****e.

6. 'Movin Thru Your System' by Jark Prongo

An anthem for robots everywhere. I'm a sucker for mechanized voices.

7. 'Unspeakable Joy' by Kim English

Chelsea's anthem is a welcome return of Kim English to the dancefloors, with production by Razor & Guido that's a touch too over the top towards the end. 8. 'Under The Water' by Brother Brown

This bitch sounds too much like Bjork; but on the other hand, its a cute song with supercute vocals. Melody makes a comeback.

9. 'Higher' by Vernessa Mitchell

This song is way too old-fashioned to have been a hit in the clubs, and yet its a great song. It may even be the catchiest vocal of the year. Its great to have gospel diva Vernessa Mitchell back in house music; she sounds fresher than ever in this production, which is 100 times more relaxed than her other songs.. instead of screetchy and mean she sounds ecstatic and joyful. Its a clever song with an uplifting message and a wonderful filtered piano riff.

10. 'Dance Naked' by Aaron Carl

Peter Rauhofer's highest entry on our list. This song would be much better if it weren't for the cheesy spoken vocal about being in a big room full of naked Chelsea boys. Heaven for some; a nightmare for me (unless I had a machine gun). Luckily, that percussion riff Peter uses is both enthralling and original.

Took me a little copy and pasting from a website that has them all listed...

But it took some time to read and reflect the good ole days... And I believe I own every single track on that list weather it be a CD single. Commercial CD or Bootleg... :)

I love all the old tracks from way back when more so than I do the tracks of today... Dont get me wrong there are a ton of great tracks out today. But the classics bring back so many memories...
