New Years Eve '03

I haven't seen much yet for new years. My friends will be throwing a great underground event that night. They've been putting these on for 6 or 7 years now, usually get about 1,000-1,500 out for some great house and great vibes. I'll post more when I get details.

Can you get a bit more specific about the house you like? What are some of your favorite DJs/producers?

Did anybody see the email Giant sent out announcing their party for NYE2004.

48 hours nonstop party:eek:  at the bonaventure hotel.

They havent announced the DJs yet but im sure the line-up is going to be off the hook. I just hope they dont book PVD again this year. I wouldnt mind seeing Danny Howells again.

i think it's pretty frikkin' nervy of them to expect people to buy tix to the party and $200-and-up room tix without knowing who the djs are, first  .

Well if you think about it Giant has brought amazing talent to town the last 4 years. They bring in all the big names all the time. You've been here too long to know better.:blown: Plus I am sure they are trying to control the whole hotel and need to show interest for the hotel to agree.

Danny plays Miami sometimes. Why no PvD or AvB? Cuz of the crowds or just cuz you dont like em? That owl is too cute.

i've liked some of pvd's cds - out there and back was a life-altering album, for me - but i've never liked him live.

armin van buuren has an incredible ability to take me from having an amazing time on the dancefloor to forcing me off of it. seriously - i can be dancing up a storm to whoever precedes him, and, as soon as he comes on, my feet stop. it's uncanny  .

my owl thanks you :kiss2: . people say she looks masculine and that's part of why people assume i'm a guy :( (these people obviously don't read the "gender" slot in my info), but i'm not about to put a bow on her head or anything else of that sort :funny: !!!

dang...you peeps are charting the course for NYE eh? The gig that Giant is throwing is a bit questionable - first off, not DJ line ups. Second, inside one of LA's landmark hotels? Don't get me wrong, the Bonaventure is a classy place (not that I've stayed there :P) But I just don't see Giant's groove jiving with Bonaventure  . And what happen to the traditional outdoor theme? Although it was freezing a couple years, it was a good time.

Gotta hand it to Dave Dean though....he's got some pull to get the Bonaventure to agree to this. That, or the Bonaventure's just desperate for some business :D

I've been a devoted fan of Giant's NYE parties for the past 3 years. PvD has yet to wear out on me, but some new sound wouldn't hurt. Any other NYE gigs floating around? I remember Spundae did some crazy 12 hr shit on NY day last year, headlining AvB. Any alternatives?

i'm with you.

i knew about oakie and howells (who now has a residency at avalon, so he'll be here even more than a lot, is how i'd phrase it, sandiegino :funny: !), but i only knew that 'cause my omniscient friend told me, and he only found out 'cause it was posted on g r oo ve tickets. giant didn't send that out in a mailer, or at least they didn't include that in the mailer they sent to me that told me how much of my money they want  .

giant also had said that it was a 2-day party for $60, and now they changed their tune; it's $60 for the first night.

the fine print about the bonaventure also said the rooms were double occupancy, with only a few triple occupancy available. this makes me think that there'll be security-types checking everyone's every move through room keys or wristbands or such, to make sure that people aren't having room parties or any other such fun. and the fine print prohibiting any food or drink in the rooms is just straight-up ridiculous. they wouldn't be able to regulate that entirely, ok... but the spirit of that alone pisses me off. all of this just isn't worth the trouble, for me.

i'd just like to be chilling at home with my friends. if only i could convince them to do the same knirsch.gif .

  • 1 month later...

I attended the Giant Venture New Years Eve party at the Bonaventure two days ago, and I am incredibly disappointed. I purchased a $160 ticket online for VIP access. Other parties/clubs in Hollywood, which I should have attended, charged less and offered an open bar all night. Information was difficult to obtain on this event, so I made an assumption that the hyped up price would offer several benefits beyond the general admission.

I arrived at the Westin at 8pm, as instructed, and was surprised that I had to wait in a 45 minute line with everyone else that paid less than half of my VIP ticket. But I was certain that it would be better when I entered. Finally, I got in and began asking everyone who worked there what the special red wristband would allow me to get. No one knew anything. Even the bartenders, security personelle, and ticket takers were clueless. I hit up the bar and was surprised when I still had to wait in a very long line AND pay the same price as everyone else for a drink. So why did I pay so much for this VIP ticket?

Soon, I came across the elevators and the large bouncer saw my red wristband and shuffled me in saying it meant I could go to the VIP lounge on the 35th floor. Finally, I could reap the benefits of my VIP ticket. When I arrived to the empty rooftop lounge with my friends, we were seated in a secluded booth and ordered even more expensive drinks. We came back 3 more times throughout that night and were surprised to find that the VIP lounge upstairs was empty the entire night.

Since no one was up there, we left and went down to where everyone was dancing. I hit up a crowd of people trying to get through metal detectors. There wasn't a line, but instead, it was a sweaty pack of a hundred people pushing and shoving to get through. At one point, I was pushed down by a man and I was almost trampled. After over 30 minutes, I got through the metal detector, which I then discovered had been turned off because it had been taking too long to put everyone through. I later overheard a group of "thuggish" guys bragging that they got their "pieces" through security. I feared for my safety. The dancefloor was less than half full, and this scene was identical on each dance floor level. The repetiton of "waiting to be disappointed" on each floor became the most sobering agent of the night.

Overall, the experience was only salvaged by the nice group of friends I was with. Otherwise, I found the evening to be the worst New Years Eve of my life. I paid an extra "VIP" price and got nothing in return except long lines, an unorganized and rude event staff, a dangerous environment where I was almost trampled, and overpriced drinks (even for LA) that sucked over $300 out of my pocket alone. So overall, I spent almost $500 by the end of the short night, and I definitely felt the void in my pocket book.

i'm sorry to hear that, giantsucked :( ! my attitude about new year's is now that the simpler the plans are, the better the evening'll probably turn out. since people usually have so much riding on new year's eve, less is more, 'cause there's less to go wrong. but that's just what's been my experience.
