The Cliff Notes:

First paragraph: Tiesto's productions are good and better than many of the other DJs praised in the field.

Second paragraph: Tiesto has a wide fanbase, and many of his records carry a mass appeal factor with them.

Third Paragraph: It's cool and trendy to bash Trance, or to be a fan of a certain popular Trance DJ and bash other popular trance DJs.

Fourth paragraph: If you're looking for for an evening that doesn't pretend to be too serious and too forward thinking, you might enjoy Tiesto's set.

I'm a a huuuge trance fan...I love the sound and the energy...this is not about PvD vs Tiesto...and who cares about techno? I don't think it's cool, I think it's boring.

To me dance music is only as good as how new it is...that's just me...half of the quality is from how fresh the track is...the other half is based on the music itself.

So why did he play all these tracks that have been killed for years now?

When I go out to see a big time DJ I want to be blown away by the sound, mesmerized by music I may have never heard, or only heard once or twice, but that I KNOW or FEEL is cutting edge, and in the "NOW".

Personally as far as productions go, I'll take "Love Comes Again" anyday over Wink's "Oakish", or his older records like "Don't Laugh" (like that's supposed to be innovative and underground?). There's nothing underground about many of the so called "Techno" DJs these days, they're just playing loops of different beats, with a supposed dark atmpshere added to it to "enhance" the experience. It gets old quick.

There is a Poppy element to "Love Comes Again" (commercial Top 40 stations in Europe like Beat 106 Scotland and Radio 538 Holland are already playing it in regular rotation), but the same was true for his remix of "Silence", or his Tech/Pop record "Traffic". It's not like Sasha never collaborated with Maria Nayler on Poppy vocals, or Carl Cox didn't make Happy Hardcore back in the day. Diversity is good, and sometimes it creates catchy/somewhat cheesy records that are fun to listen to, and sometimes it creates cool futuristic tunes which blow our minds. I rarely encounter neither of these scenarios with many of todays pure "Tech" DJs. Tiesto is fun to watch, Wink's okay to go see, but he was better as a DJ 10 years ago. I'm not basing this on any facts, just my own personal opinion.

Many of you guys didn't even care about Techno until it was big for a while with Progressive DJs in 2000-2002, and then became somewhat big with a certain Italian DJ, a former UK Hardhouse DJ who hosts a show on BBC Radio 1, and Dutch Trance DJs like Tiesto and Marco V. that incorporated some crossover Techno last year. I bet many of you who are bashing Tiesto now were last year or the year before his biggest fans, and were caught up in those stupid PVD vs. Tiesto threads...

While we're at it, even when I compare Tiesto's Nyana to Armin's A State of Trance 2004 (though Armin's recent Mixmag CD was excellent!!!), the Nyana CD is the better sounding of the bunch. The only Trance DJ I prefer to Tiesto is PVD. He's the one that's been spinning and producing Trance most consistently for a lot longer than most of the Trance and even Progressive DJs. There, another stupid addition to the "Which Trance DJ has the biggest penis" threads...

If generally speaking you're a fan of the pretentious styles of EDM (ie yuppie Jazzy House ala Mark Farina, or Hawtin style Techno) then you probably won't enjoy Tiesto, or Erick Morillo, or John Digweed. If you like FUN EDM that doesn't go overboard on cheese like NYC guido anthems and Freestyle on the one hand, or on too much dark overtones and slow BPMs on the other hand, then there's a good chance you'll like Tiesto's set.

BTW, what do you mean by Tiesto stepping down from number one? The readers voted for him, he didn't elect himself.

First off your a fucking idiot, let me finish reading the post then Ill reply.....

WOW, You got balls boy.......

I have always been a techno addicted, when Marco V made his productions and played I was always there, and there was somthing I liked.... The Harder, edger beat behind it. As a dj your main objective should be to make people dance and that is what techno does for me......

To compare Oakish to Love comes Again, just shows how stupid you are....

Tiesto is a talented dj, who imo has and will get credit for crossing over such techno songs as Igor S - Boomerang, Frank Biazzi - Turbulence, Secret Cinama _ Another Sweater, etc... I give him credit for doing that BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

90% of Techno Dj's love the fact that you idiots bitch and moan about chart hits and how many peole they can fit in space........

When was the last time you saw Tiesto Spin to a crowd that didnt want him to stop....... NEVER Punk, This is The uS these dicks want money....

For Dj's like Chris Liebing, Maurro Picotto, Richie Hawtin, to cut there cost to play for 400 people is simply amazinggggggggg.

Techno Dj's imo embodied what a dj should be, fuck trainwrecks, they should experiment with sounds, spin till they want to stop, spin with each other, have a good time and most of all understand the crowd.....

SO in closing you go talk to PVD and Tiesto and ask them what they think, chances are they will walk right by you and laugh, as for someone like josh wink they will say thank you for appreciateing my music and anywhere where a crowd understands me I will play............

WARNING, WARNING, another long biased post.

So let's see:

A) I got balls. Yup, my left testicle is still hanging in there.

B) I'm a f*ckin idiot. No argument there, everyone has their flaws.

C) Techno DJs, like most Drum N Bass DJs, are relatively cheap to book. Might have something to do with supply and demand.

Tell me something I don't know :blank:

I usually prefer the Techno DJs that incorporate some House into their sets. I'm not all that impressed with a DJ that just spins 3 records simultaneously if one record is just a looped acapella of a certain squelch, another record is just a looped hi hat, and another record is a few looped drum beats. Add to that a few sound manipulations, and you've got a so called Techno wizard.

It's not my fault Sven Vath and Picotto got tired of Trance at some point if all they were listening to 24/7 was a certain style of Trance. It's very limiting. It's also not my fault most Detroit Techno DJs weren't as musically trained as their European counterparts, and couldn't get most of the American underground audience hooked on their sound. They used to make these ultra cheesy "Techno" records back in the 80s that all sounded like a Pac Man arcade game, and then they went more "underground" by making these one hour minimalistic records. Geez, how hard is it to go into a studio ON DRUGS (read the interviews), and make a so called Techno record in just one hour (again, read the interviews). You want real respect? You have to earn it, and quite honestly most of their records don't get the public's respect, b/c these so called producers don't put in a real effort into making them.

Agoria, Robert Natus, they produce some interesting sounding Techno, but a lot of the other bigger guys make these 7 minute records that really do sound like they took 7 minutes to make.

It sometimes feels like the analogy is this:

Techno producers = The porn industry. No real actors, and everything is done within one or two takes. Porn movies are cheap to make, and porn stars usually get paid cheap salaries.

Progressive Producers = The Independent Film Industry. Good actors, great ideas, but usually no big fancy budget so you need to maximize what you got. Sometimes needs a bit more polish.

Melodic Trance and Melodic House Producers = Hollywood. Some of them go over the top on schmaltz, some of the actors are overhyped and overpaid. However, sometimes you need a big budget with a good cast to deliver an epic film, and to capture the depth and the emotions conveyed by the writers and producers.
