If you owned a nightclub/lounge...

What would it be like?

Would you opt for the posh decor, lots of intimate little nooks & crannies with small tables to lure the upscale clientele or would you prefer something dark, minimal and strictly for dancing?

I think if I owned a club, I'd try to model it after Vinyl. The big room would have black walls and great lighting with a top notch sound system (without lots of sitting area) but the back room would have a more loungey feel (no tables though). There would be a projector showing only gangster flicks all night long. My residents would be DJ Heather, Derrick L. Carter, Halo and Chris Lum. :D

Let's make it interesting:

Where would this venue be located in the Miami area?

Who would your residents be?

Weekly format (what nights)?

Door policy?

and for those inclined:

sound and lighting specs?

Your budget for everything is $4 million.

Discuss!

pretty much described how i would have it...i would have a big room (main room) with a lot of room for dancing...medium sized VIP area...good lights and the program to control them...good lighting guy...easy access bars....2 unisex bathrooms (instead of the male/female...both bathrooms would have urinals and stalls) and the sinks would be in the middle separating both unisex bathrooms (like Limebar/Maze use to have)...the booth wouldnt be that high up...def. a good nitrous system...prob. a Funktion one system...then the place would have a "chill out" lounge...couches everywhere, comfy ones...a small bar in the lounge with a another set of unisex bathrooms in the lounge...the mainroom would play ur std. house/tech house/techno...the chill out room would play deep tech/tech house/ambient stuff...

some djs that would play:

main room: Carl Cox, Oscar G, Danny Howells, Danny Teng., James Holden, etc

lounge: Craig Richards, Lee Burridge, Omid 16b, Little Mike, Ty Tek, Brett Johnson, etc

on the tech-house email list Phil Williams had this to say once..

"While we're talking booths, I must share a good experience. If you ever make

it to New Zealand, go to Dunedin and check out my favourite club on the

planet. It's called Bath St, holds 150 people max, and the owner is a total

audiophile. The booth is right on the dancefloor, with *no* monitors. Recipe

for disaster? No! The way John has positioned everything, and the

compactness of the floor, means as soon as you're over about 40% system

power, you are playing in the live soundfield with no delay. Feel and hear

every frequency as your floor does... It's a truly magnificent experience."

I would design the place like that, residents would be me, armand S., Sage Molotov, this one guy who's friends with Matt e love, can't remember his name, and other's I can't think of right now, would not be all dance music all the time, I would want to have one retro mod garage punk rock night there 4 sure, like they used to have at Slak, I love that shit! it would be cool to have at least 2 different rooms... I'd even have hip hop, but it would have to be good hip hop, not commercial cheese, and not psuedo-intellectual bullshit either, just good stuff, I would audition a lot of dj's before choosing the right one(s) and no deep jazzy house ever!!! any dj who played it would get beat up by the bouncers and thrown out in the alley, while we burn all their records on the roof (just kidding)

it would be located off the beach, near Space and I/O

lights would be kept minimal, too many clubs here have too many lights, sure it's impressive to see all those things swinging around and all, but it gets way too bright, you need darkness for the right vibe, video screens would be essential, for movie nights, and for visuals synched to the music, that would be more fun than too many lights, I'd also experiment with having films being shown, with the audio output sent to the dj mixer so that the dj can use the movie dialogue as an accapella ;)

and I would concentrate on working hard with my local residents to develop a signature sound for the fri and sat night prime time slots... rather than flying in a dream team of my favorite big name stars

Whatever type of club/lounge I opened, I would make sure enough money is set aside for proper promoting and advertising. There are so many of you in the industry who do a great job and bring down great talent, but no one shows up. Gotta get the word out.

Any of you ever use the airplane banners that fly over the beaches. It seems like Louis is the only one who consistently does. Though if you do, make sure you pay them. I remember they flew a banner one day that said "Club so-and-so (forgot the name), PAY YOUR BILLS!"

yeah I saw that, it was hilarious, I think it was the Living Room, after it had changed owners's but still had the same name, or maybe it was whatever name they gave it right after that

promotions and advertising are important, though the focus has to be on overall public relations... some clubs open up and try to have a strict door policy, and don't realize that some of the people who show up at the rope are actually local scenesters who should be treated well, and they treat them like shit, and then the place gets a very bad reputation over night... you have to make sure everything is really ready to go before you do your official grand opening, you only have one chance to make a good first impression, and know who is who, you have to go around and meet everybody in the scene and schmooze with them and all, outsiders will never have a chance around here, unless they bring they're own clientele from elsewhere

a truly successful place will know how to cater to both a posh crowd and music fans, without offending either one, without making either one feel un-welcome, with great music for the fans, and places where they can sit down, and also a really well done VIP area with excellent service for the poshies

Dade was saying how this is the plan for Nocturnal, hopefully it works

i agree with phillipio on this one

but not after vinyl, but after ARC.

no posh crowd either, just real music fans

Nah... I liked Vinyl much much better!!! The blackness and grimey feel of the place was what made it so great! Plus the management was so much better!!! :D

Should we change the title of this thread to:

What if your BROTHER owned a club?

Would that get your creative juice flowing?

I would say the best layout would be Arc or the blue room @ the "old" Space. A room just dedicated to dancing. Something thats dark and intimate. My resident dj's would be: Oscar G, Steve Lawler, Low End Specialists, Victor Calderone, Deep Dish, James Holden, Lee Burridge, Phil Thompson, Infusion, Way Out West, Satoshi Tomiie, Anthony Pappa...just so many too chose. In other words, just quality house music.
