MIAMI BEACH

Suspect in fatal crash surrenders

A woman faces vehicular homicide charges after a fatal Saturday night accident that resulted in the closing of MacArthur Causeway for five hours.

The Fort Lauderdale woman who police say caused a deadly accident on MacArthur Causeway -- then walked away in the midst of the chaos -- turned herself in to Miami Beach police Monday evening.

Audrey Muller, 25, walked into police headquarters accompanied by her attorney, said Detective Bobby Hernandez, a police spokeswoman.

Muller is charged with vehicular homicide, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries and reckless driving, Hernandez said.

Muller was still in Miami-Dade County Jail late Monday, a corrections official said. Her attorney could not be reached late Monday. It was not clear where she fled or why.

But police have painted the following picture of the deadly accident that took place Saturday night:

Muller drove her rented red Ford Explorer into the rear of a Dodge Stratus stopped in traffic about 7:35 p.m. Saturday.

At first, Muller backed up and drove around the Stratus in an attempt to flee, but her Explorer either stalled or was pinned in by traffic.

A Miami Beach paramedic approached Muller, who was talking on her cellphone, asking if she was injured. Her response was curt: ``No.''

Rescue workers quickly sized up Muller and -- seeing no blood or visible injuries -- moved on to the nearby crushed Dodge Stratus.

There, paramedics found one woman was dead, her two children, ages 4 and 8, and several others in the car were badly hurt.

Killed in the accident: Jami Agudelo, 28, a tourist from Tampa.

Her husband, Sergio Agudelo, their two children and Sergio's brother, Jorge Agudelo, suffered minor injuries and were treated and released from Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach.

Suffering more severe injuries were Sergio's sister, Diana Agudelo, and her boyfriend, Alejandro Velez. They were taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center in Miami, where their injuries were described as serious.

''As paramedics, we have to move on to the people who really need our help, so we focused on the other people in the car,'' Fire-Rescue Chief Javier Otero said. ``Muller looked like someone who was OK, who wasn't a priority.''

None of the 12 paramedics who eventually worked the chaotic accident scene knew that Muller had been identified by witnesses as causing the crash, Otero said.

''She wasn't identified as someone who could not leave the scene,'' Otero said.

A short time later, a different paramedic escorted Muller to a makeshift emergency rescue station on the side of the road.

''We asked her when we first got there if she hurt,'' Otero said. ''Then, when we had time, another paramedic went to her again and asked her if she was hurt,'' said Otero. ``She said her neck hurt.''

Then she vanished.

Miami Beach police were not sure whether Muller walked off or jumped into someone's car to escape amid the chaos of frustrated, honking drivers, many of whom were traveling to and from Ultra, an outdoor electronic music festival at Miami's Bayfront Park.

Neighbors said Muller has been living for several months with her mother and stepfather, a boat captain, in a waterfront Fort Lauderdale townhouse in the 2700 block of Northeast 15th Street.

since I moved to the beach 5 years ago, I rarely drive...when I do, I do it with much care...I get so shocked when I see an accident, even though they're very common...I rarely get to see them, people need to be more careful out there...never drive while fucked up and always be on the lookout, take care of yourselves and your brothers and sisters yo...there too much at stake...look what happened to a day that was supposed to be a celebration...distraction and carelesness turned the whole thing onto a horrible tragedy...

bottom line, drive safe!!!

smart...venetian causeway is alright with me...mind ya, it's not only about driving safe, you have to be always looking for some crazy mofos that are on constant collission course...slow drivers are also a deathtrap...for real, you are driving down I-95 at 60mph and suddenly you can almost rear end some junk-yard material contraption that shouldn't be on the on the road, carrying not only 9 members of a family but the eventual farm animal...going 35mph???

freaky stuff yo!

i stick to the 71rst st. causway (as it's right down my driveway) or 123rd/96th..sometimes it's worth the toll ..

kids on scooters/bikes can be just as scary as crazy motherfuckers in cars tho.. i think they sometimes think that a scooter means they're completely safe because none of us would ever think about hitting them w/ a car.. *roll eyes*

20 points if you do!

  • 18 years later...

I’m the dead victims mother.  It was a long time ago but I think about her everyday.
my sadness is the driver, Audrey Muller, never once gave any sense of remorse. Since there was an insurance pay off, when asked if she was sorry, her attorney said ‘the money is your apology’

i continually watch to see how her life is going.  I believe God hasn’t made it easy.   Our hearts would heal a little easier if she would just offer any kind of remorse.
