Bar scuffle leads to weapons, drug charges

Tuesday, May 03, 2005

ELIZABETH:

Shots fired behind a bar resulted in the arrest of four men on weapons charges, with two of the men also accused of drug possession, police said yesterday.

Officers were working at Club Flight on Spring Street at 2:30 a.m. Saturday when they heard gunshots on the south side of the building, said Capt. Jon Chisholm.

Police ran around the corner and saw two men get into a silver, four-door 1996 Ford. The car tried to exit the parking lot, but traffic blocked the vehicle. Witnesses yelled, pointed at the vehicle and said the occupants had guns, Chisholm said. An unmarked police car pulled behind the vehicle and the Ford allegedly rammed the police car and another vehicle before heading north on Routes 1&9.

The driver, later identified as Yasin Villafana, 19, of Elizabeth, lost control of the car and ran into guardrails along the highway before coming to a stop. Police ordered the men out of the car, and Villafana tried to run across the highway, but was arrested after a struggle. He had 13 bags of marijuana in his possession, Chisholm said.

A back seat passenger, Halim Tyler, 29, of South Carolina, also tried to run but was arrested. He had a packet of cocaine in his pocket, police said.

Another passenger, Ali Karim, 23, of Rahway, allegedly exited the car holding a handgun and tossed it over his shoulder onto a grassy median when police told him to drop it. Officers later recovered the gun, a semiautomatic weapon with a defaced serial number. Police ordered Karim to lie on the ground and used pepper spray to subdue him. It took three officers, Chisholm said, to take him into custody.

Malik James, 21, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was arrested after a brief struggle with police.

Police found a second handgun in the car, also with a defaced serial number.

The defendants suffered minor injuries, but refused medical attention, Chisholm said. James, Tyler and Karim were charged with obstructing the administration of law, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and possession of a defaced firearm.

Tyler was additionally charged with cocaine possession. Villafana, the alleged driver, was arrested on weapons charges and charged with marijuana possession, drug possession with intent to distribute, aggravated assault on a police officer and eluding.

Bail for each man was set at $100,000.

Must be all that hip-hop and reggaeton attracting the ghetto element.
