raincry
Some curfews to be curtailed; clubs, bars ready for weekend South Beach and Las Olas Boulevard nightclubs got the green light to stay open late this weekend. Others, though, have events planned as well. By BRETT O'BOURKE bobourke@herald.com It's party time. After nearly a week of inactivity, many area nightclubs and bars will be back in action this weekend. The city of Miami Beach is relaxing its 8 p.m. curfew beginning today, according to spokeswoman Nannette Rodriguez. Other cities also are beginning to roll back curfews that began as early as 7 p.m. following Wilma. Larry Wald, owner of Cathode Ray, a gay club on Las Olas Boulevard is happy to be back in business and hopes things will be back to normal soon. ``We're just happy to have power and food and water back. It's business as usual as far as we are concerned. We've put up Halloween decorations, sent people out to distribute fliers, even got the staff in costume.'' In downtown Miami, it looks like Space is the only nightclub that will attempt to be open late this weekend. Its Halloween party, ''Howellween III vs. Space Alien'' featuring British disc jockey Danny Howell is a go for Saturday, according to a message on the club's answering machine: ``Yes, we did survive the hurricane and we will be open.'' The message did not mention how the club will attempt to bypass the curfew. Churchill's Pub and Tobacco Road in Miami are open this weekend, but only till 8 p.m. for food and drinks. No live music is scheduled. But on South Beach, the party machine is revving back up. Said Vanessa Menkes of the Opium Group, which operates Opium, Mansion and Privé: ''We'll have free admission for locals for all venues, Halloween decor and the resident DJs.'' Host MC Hammer, scheduled to perform at Mansion tonight, has been rescheduled for mid-December. Crobar rolled the dice and didn't cancel their big weekend event -- DJ Carl Cox Cox on Friday night -- which they are hoping pays off. ''We're going full steam ahead,'' Crobar marketing director Paolo Pincente said. ``We took a huge chance keeping the Carl Cox event booked. With people having been cooped up all week, we're hoping they're ready to party.'' The Luis Miguel shows at AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami originally scheduled for tonight and Saturday have been rescheduled for Nov. 29-30. Michael Hamersly contributed to this report.
