Threat keeps student from graduation

By HARRY YANOSHAK AND BEN FINLEY

BRISTOL TOWNSHIP SCHOOLS

Police offered him a bulletproof vest to wear under his graduation gown and two plainclothes detectives to flank him during his speech on stage.

If that was too risky, he could bid farewell to Harry S Truman High School via video link.

But in the end, Bristol Township police and school officials decided Tyrone Lewis, the standout athlete and senior class president, would not be allowed to attend his high school graduation on Friday.

Police said Tyrone was the target of a “credible†threat that he would be shot at the ceremony scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the high school stadium.

The shooter, according to police, may be a reputed Trenton gang member looking to retaliate against Tyrone's sister for testifying this year in a Bristol Township murder case.

Even without Tyrone at the graduation, police said they would boost security in Truman's football stadium, adding more officers and possibly state police, county deputy sheriffs and metal detectors to screen the crowd.

This is a tough situation. The school board wants to protect the student and others as well and the parents are worred about the principle of the matter. But will the principle keep your child safe?? They threaten a law suit if they dont allow him to go to the ceremony but what if he's shot?? Then they will still sue.

As a parent what would your reaction be?
