Electro in NYC??

I'm new to NYC - just arrived from London, and trying to find anywhere in this city that has an electro night on.

In London and all round Europe electro is HUGE, does it not get played out here? Surely people come back from Ibiza and want to hear the same music at home - ?

I went to Pacha last Friday and Morillo just played non-descript tribal stuff. Very boring. Where can I go to hear some filthy electronic basslines???

Thanks in advance,

Barry

to my knowledge, there's no specific party just for electro. but a lot of DJs are playing this sound in their sets (sometimes too much of a good thing, ahem).

Based on what you've said, you'd probably like:

Tedd Patterson, monthly Saturdays at Cielo (which is also an awesome club) - next one is this saturday, also three-year anniversary of Vibal (name of the party)

Low End Specialists, who have a dubby tech/electro sound that is reminiscent of Peace Division. Ok, so you asked for electro...well, they play some lower bpm electro in their sets.

The Robots parties, although a lot of their bookings are along the minimal style, but when electro and tech and minimal intersect, it will probably be at a Robots party

You're going to find electro more by the DJ than by the club or party. It's a pretty popular sound in NYC right now though. Sometimes folks call it "dirty filty house music"

:laugh2:

deepsee, i would not reccommend tedd patterson or the robot parties to someone looking for electro.

Patterson is that boring soulful house crap and robots is almost always minimal tech.

it depends what kind of electro you are looking for.

If you are talking about real electro from detroit like Drexcyia, etc, well you gotta wait a while.

If you are talking about the pop electro being played in all the clubs now, check out Larry Tee, he is the godfather of the modern crap

Tribal sucks. It is the worst, most boring, most un original music out there and it has infected nyc clubs like a disgusting virus. Sorry you had to be exposed to it.

hold on now....Drexcyia is probably not the sound that people are asking for when they mention "electro." you've got to read between the lines. Drexciya is so niche (and so is their sound). Frankly when people say "electro" I think they're talking about the stuff like: Luciano, Glimmers, Loco Dice, David Duriez, Booka Shade, Get Physical Music...

Maybe I'm completely wrong but most people who I hear talk about electro are talking about a take on a big room sound that uses the squelchy/bleepy sounds of minimal with more robust percussion elements, borrowed from tech house.

As for Larry Tee, he is mostly responsible for "electroclash" which to me has a more rock aesthetic. I really didn't follow that scene at all, but that was "electro" of the early 2000s, not the "electro" that I think people are clammoring for today.

Tedd Patterson is hardly sleepy soulful house. He rarely plays vocals, and if he does, they aren't from the genre you'd call "soulful house." If you think "Work It" and "Damage" are boring soulful house, then to say we have different opinions would be putting it mildly.

I mentioned Robots in this thread because yes, it's mostly minimal tech but some of the bookings "might" appeal to someone looking for an electro sound. Honestly, today most DJs in NYC (either local or travelling, including Tenaglia, Morillo, Vibe, etc) are playing electro in their sets. I would even venture to say the sound is become played out.

Uhhh when is the last time you heard Tedd play? Sounds like you haven't been to Cielo in quite a while, or you missed his set at Crobar before Victor...

Might be worth a re-visit and if anything you'll enjoy the Cielo "scenery"

I agree w/ the thread saying that electro is getting played out. Seems like everyone and their mother who is a DJ jumped on this bandwagon, and I really don't understand why. All of it sounds the same and I don't know how anyone can dance to that crap.

When I say electro I was thinking of stuff across the board from 'pop electro' like Chris Lake/D. Ramirez through to more credible stuff like King Roc.

Does that help?

not really because NYC does not have an electro-only party as far as I know (if anyone knows to the contrary, please help me out). But...a lot of jocks are playing the electro sound, including stuff by D. Ramirez and the like, in their sets (in fact, a set by Louie Vega--granted, it was from the UK I believe--was posted at another board and had people going nuts over a D. Ramirez track).

As was already stated, most of the big room players in NYC are working with this sound: Morillo, DT, Tedd Patterson. I would bet most of your local jocks that do the mid-week parties are also throwing it down a lot. You just have to try some places out and see what you like. But no "all-electro" nights as far as I know.
