true story: first time I met Doom he had a camo team punishment winter beanie hat on. It was August...

That's fucking right! We were hanging out for Steve Lawler.

I remember between your 22nd and 23rd shot of Jager, you were bragging about how the Under Armour t-shirt you were wearing in showed off maximum tricep definition. You also told me that even though you are 6'2, 240 lbs, you only wear shirts in size small to intimidate everyone from the gym to dance circles.

It seems the only people who think UFC 71 was a failure are the sort of mainstream national sports media columnists who never want to take a moment to learn something out of their wheelhouse, and wish mixed martial arts would simply go away.

We got a blowaway response to UFC 71, both in terms of page views and the sheer number of blog comments to our main event post. Nearly all of the feedback about the show has been positive, and MMA fans have never been shy to express their opinions when they don't like what they see. The show was entertaining from top to bottom, there wasn't a boring match, there was a near-perfect mix of submissions, KOs, and the two fights that went to decisions were filled with action.

But never mind. Some people were simply going to latch on to something to pick apart no matter what.

And they had it ready-made in the fact the main event only went 1:38, as Quinton Jackson TKOd Chuck Liddell to capture the UFC light heavyweight title. There it is, the angle they're looking for: How can UFC expect to maintain a fan base when the main event is so short?

I've been around long enough to know how this works: Find an easy angle, spit out clichés for 20 minutes, hit "send," then head off to the bar for the night. One gets the impression they would have called UFC too boring if the fight went the distance, and would have come up with something else had it gone three.

But let's give the argument casual fans won't pay for short main events a look. Here are the results of UFC's pay-per-view main events in 2006:

UFC 57: Liddell KOs Randy Couture, Round 2

UFC 58: Rich Franklin decisions David Loiseau after five rounds

UFC 59: Tim Sylvia TKOs Andrei Arlovski, Round 1

UFC 60: Matt Hughes TKOs Royce Gracie, Round 1

UFC 61: Sylvia decisions Andrei Arlovski after five rounds

UFC 62: Liddell TKO's Renato Sobral, Round 1

UFC 63: Hughes TKOs B.J. Penn, Round 3

UFC 64: Anderson Silva KOs Franklin, Round 1

UFC 65: Georges St. Pierre TKOs Hughes Round 2

UFC 66: Liddell TKOs Tito Ortiz, Round 3

Four of 10 pay-per-view main events finished in one round, six went less than 10 minutes. Going into 2006, UFC had never done 200K PPV buys for a show in the Zuffa LLC era. Liddell-Ortiz did 1,050,0000. I would say a more-than-500-percent increase in business in less than one year doesn't quite qualify as "turning off casual fans."

Further, one fight not listed there was Ortiz and Ken Shamrock, the semi-main event of UFC 61, which was stopped in less than two minutes. Fans hated the decision at the time. But that match was parlayed into the biggest TV rating in UFC history for Ortiz-Shamrock III, and helped build Ortiz and Liddell, both of whom were coming off first-round wins, into the biggest buy rate in UFC history.

If anything, the evidence suggests fans get into fighters with first-round stoppage power. But then, the opinion kings weren't looking to do any research before jumping to conclusions.

Just for kicks, let's stretch this out into 2007:

UFC 67: Silva TKOs Travis Lutter, Round 2

UFC 68: Couture decisions Sylvia, five rounds

UFC 69: Matt Serra TKOs St. Pierre, Round 1

UFC 70: Gabriel Gonzaga KOs Mirko Cro Cop, Round 1

UFC 71: Jackson TKOs Liddell, Round 1

UFC 70 was seen on Spike TV, meaning casual fans had the opportunity to sample the product on basic cable. And that they did: Among males aged 18-34, UFC 70 did better ratings than Red Sox-Yankees, the NBA playoffs, and NASCAR. They saw a first-round KO. And they still came back and helped make UFC 71 a show that will give UFC 66 a real run for the buy-rate record.

UFC has been roping in casual fans over the past 18 months without the approval of self-appointed opinion shapers. The people have voted with their dollars and will continue to do so whether or not the intelligentsia comes along for the ride.

UFCjunkie.com Exclusive: Chuck Liddell’s Agent Denies Rehab Claim

Posted by UFC Junkie on June 11, 2007 at 1:08 pm ET

070307liddell.jpgIn a recent interview, former UFC fighter and MMA veteran Vernon White stated that Chuck Liddell was “in rehab” for drug addiction prior to his UFC 71 championship bout with Quinton Jackson — and that it may have contributed to Liddell’s eventual first-round TKO loss.

However, UFCjunkie.com (www.ufcjunkie.com) caught up with Liddell’s agent today, and he flatly denied that his fighter was in rehab.

”[it’s] not true,” Jervis Cole says. “No other comment is needed.“

White, who owns a 25-30-2 career MMA record (0-1-1 in the UFC), suffered a first-round TKO loss to Liddell at UFC 49. It was his final fight in the UFC before he moved on to smaller organizations.

In the interview with MMA forum BloodyKnux.com, White claims that he suffered significant eye-socket damage in the August 2004 fight and that it required $38,000 to fix. White never clarified if he thought the alleged eye poke was intentional.

Later in the interview, White discussed UFC 71 and stated that “it was stupid for [Liddell] to come out of rehab and fight [Quinton] the way he fought him.” When later asked to clarify the comment, White said that he heard from “a close friend” that Liddell “had been in drug rehab for an addiction and got back into the cage too soon.“

White also referenced Liddell’s infamous appearance on Good Morning Texas and said that it further strengthens his argument.

Liddell was largely incoherent during the March 2007 interview and even nodded off at one point. However, trainer John Hackleman later stated that Liddell was suffering from what would later be diagnosed as pneumonia and, the night before the interview, had taken NyQuil and sleeping pills, which resulted in the slurred speech.

Nice! Kongo and Cro Cop are going to kick the living shit out of each other -a hommage to K-1. Also, "Legionarius" Sakara is my man! It is great to see him finally get respect, and be put on greater cards.

I wouldnt be surprised to see CC take Kongo to the ground at the end of each round just to get the points since Kongos ground game is so bad.

I wonder what can the UFC will have Bisping fight this time....

Not trying to sound like an elitist dick, but w/ the exception of Rashad, I really hate everyone that came off that reality show.

I didn't see the incident. I just knew that he is a better fighter than most that came from that show. While I don't hate him, I really don't like him as well, but that has to do more with the fact that's he eggplant.

By the way, please be a good sport and tell me if it is safe now to read the Sopranos finale thread. I really prefer not to interupt the scholary debate between Belladonna and Misk.

Report: Michael Bisping vs. Ken Shamrock at UFC 75

Posted by UFC Junkie on June 18, 2007 at 9:44 am ET

070618shamrock.jpgThe Ultimate Fighter 3 light heavyweight winner Michael Bisping (13-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) will fight UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock (26-12-2 MMA, 7-6-2 UFC) — not Matt Hamill — at UFC 75 in London, England on Sept. 8.

That’s the report from The Fight Network.

Bisping was originally expected to face his former castmate Matt Hamill. Ticketmaster released an event description last week that included the matchup. Instead, though, Loretta Hunt says that Shamrock will come out of retirement to face Bipsing at the event, which takes place at the 02 Arena.

After topping Josh Haynes in The Ultimate Fighter 3 Finale, Bisping defeated Eric Schafer with a first-round TKO at UFC 66. Then, in front of a Manchester crowd at April’s UFC 70 event, he scored a second-round TKO of Elvis Sinosic.

Shamrock has been fighting professionally for nearly 14 years and competed in the very first UFC event. The submission specialist left the UFC for six years but ultimately returned to fight Tito Ortiz and then to coach a team on The Ultimate Fighter 3 last year opposite Ortiz. Shamrock’s 1-4 in the Octagon since his return, with three of the losses coming to Ortiz.

Bisping appeared on Ortiz’s — not Shamrock’s — team on The Ultimate Fighter 3.

Although the UFC has confirmed that Bisping will appear on the UFC 75 card, the organization has made no official announcement regarding his opponent.

Report: Serra vs. Hughes to Headline November Event in New Jersey

Posted by UFC Junkie on June 20, 2007 at 11:35 am ET

070408serra1.jpgUFC welterweight champion Matt Serra (8-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) will make his first-ever title defense against former champ Matt Hughes (41-5 MMA, 15-3 UFC) at a November pay-per-view event in New Jersey — not at The Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale.

That’s the word from a subscriber-only Wrestling Observer report.

Serra and Hughes, coaches who are currently taping the welterweights-only sixth season of The Ultimate Fighter, were expected to fight on the show’s live finale in December. The finales usually air for free on Spike TV. Instead, the Serra vs. Hughes fight will likely headline a UFC event that comes with a pay-per-view price tag.

The event — which looks as though it’ll be UFC 79 — is expected to take place in November at the Continental Airlines Arena (aka Meadowlands Arena) in East Rutherford, N.J.

Back in May, UFCjunkie.com (www.ufcjunkie.com) posted a story stating that UFC president Dana White expected the UFC to hold an event in New Jersey in October or November of this year.

The UFC hasn’t held an event in New Jersey since Atlantic City’s “UFC 53: Heavy Hitters” in June 2005.

Serra, who won the title by upsetting Georges St. Pierre at UFC 69 in April, currently lives in East Meadow, N.Y. and should be a major draw for the event. Continental Airlines Arena can accommodate more than 20,000 spectators.

The Ultimate Fighter 6 is expected to finish taping next month and will debut in September on Spike TV.
